How To Change The Water Filter On A Whirlpool Outside?

This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the water filter on a Whirlpool refrigerator. To change the water filter, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure you get the correct replacement filter.
  2. Turn off the water supply.
  3. Locate the filter compartment.
  4. Remove the old filter.
  5. Prepare the new filter for installation.
  6. Install the new filter.
  7. Flush the new filter.
  8. Reset the filter indicator light.

For some models of the Whirlpool Fridge, the water filter is located on the lower left near the floor of the unit. If the water filter replacement light is blinking, replace it.

To change the water filter in a Whirlpool Side By Side Refrigerator, you will need a new replacement water filter, a towel or cloth for spills, and possibly a filter wrench if the current filter is difficult to remove.

The method for changing a Whirlpool water filter depends on the design of the filter and the type of water filter housing that holds the filter.

To change the water filter on your Whirlpool refrigerator, locate the water filter cover in the upper right-hand corner inside your refrigerator or in the base grille. Lift the filter door up, pull the filter out, and replace the filter.

  • I just bought a new house That came with a refrigerator and fortunately the correct replacement filter. I’m sure I could have figured this out in 5 seconds but I watched your article just to be safe. It was a five-second project. I think people probably don’t properly align the filer when they put it back in. My release button really had to be pushed in hard and it ejected nicely. Thanks.

  • Great simple presentation! I would add that if your refrigerator is not very new or if it’s been an excessively long time since the water filter was replaced, have some old towels and paper towels at the ready. The filter cartridge might have a hard time releasing when the button is pressed, or the new cartridge might have difficulty engaging when it is pushed into place. When this happens make sure it is aligned correctly (lettering and #3 on filter pointing straight up) and push extra hard. If it is only partially (but not fully) engaged, the button to the left will not pop-out and a large puddle may emerge from under the fridge.

  • A few additional items that I keep on my checklist: 1. Flip up the ‘full’ detector in your icemaker to prevent any water from the new filter getting into your ice before it’s flushed. 2. Flush 4-5 gallons of water through the filter before using it. Water straight out of an unflushed filter is not safe to drink. 3. While you’re down there with the filter… Pull off the lower skirt where the filter is, and vacuum the coils under the fridge. Dust impedes its efficiency.

  • I’m super frustrated and really hope you can help! I replaced the filter, put it in, button clicked, all that, but no water. I’ve taken it out, redone it, watched the article to see if I missed some nuance, laid on the floor to eyeball to make sure they’re lining up…still no water. When I pull the filter back out water is dripping from the ends, and I can hear the motor, just nothing coming out of the water spout. **UPDATE** Out of sheer frustration, I cut a bit off the end of the guide pin thing and BOOM we have water 🤦🏼‍♀️

  • Do you need the filter cap in order to hear a click? We moved into a new place and there just isn’t a cap for the fridge. It’s hard to even try to get the filter out – when I hit the button nothing happens. And I’m not sure how to take off the filter to even see what might be affecting it. Please help!

  • DO not throw away the old filter until you check to see if the new filter replacement works, Just purchased /just attempted to change old filter for new and the new one didn’t work. It would only work if you held / pushed in on the new filter. Double checked the part numbers and the Whirlpool number 4396841 Everydrop Equivalent number EDR3RXD1

  • One thing not mentioned after you install the new filter you have to purge out the new filter to remove all the air….Use a largest glass you can get into the water dispenser and get some water it’ll pop a lot of air make note to turn the water off at a half glass of water. Sometimes even though you stopped filling the glass the air and water will continue for up to 5 more seconds over filling the glass if you turn it off at the full glass level…The water might be black and nasty at first purge out 5 – 10 cups till the flow is smooth and clean. Then push in your reset button 5 times rapidly to reset change filter light. While your in the mood take off the lower black foot guard around the filter and clean out your Cooling lines for the chiller section below. By keeping this area clean your refrigerator will get cooler faster and save the life of the compressor and safe on your power bill also. I do not have the black cap for my filter and I always push the button in and have to tenderly take a screw driver flat head and lightly pry out the filter….

  • There are 339 comments and I don’t have time to run through them all. I cannot even push the black button to release the filter on my refrigerator on this Mobile home I just bought. I don’t know when it was changed last so I just wanted to change it. The black cap is there but it’s not attached to the filter. It’s just kind of sitting there. Is there a trick to pushing the button to release the filter?

  • everything was the right number, pulled the old one, pushed in new one did not get release button to click? Could not pull filter back out….works fine, cubes and water working fine…just thought I would try again today…still release button is not clicked back and I cannot pull the filter back out…so in a few months I guess I am paying big bucks to get that filter out?
