Ways to improve the filter 1) Put a cap with small holes (pinholes) in the BIG bottle’s mouth 2) Cotton is a better than that cloth, put lots of it and pack it tight. 3) Add more CRUSHED charcoal. (at least 2 inches (or more), compacted) 4) Add more fine sand (at least 2 inches (or more)) 5) Add more pebbles (at least 2 inches (or more)) 6) You don’t need the shredded popsicle sticks or some cut grass 7) You don’t need the smaller bottle with the syringe plunger (just put a container underneath and let gravity do the work) (If you still want the smaller bottle with the syringe plunger, I HOPE THAT YOUR HAND IS CLEAN since your hand will come in contact with the water that you are purifying when you touch to open/close that plunger) OPTIONAL Perhaps another filter bottle on top of the first one. 2 filtration system works better than 1. 8) DON’T FORGET TO BOIL. WELL… DON’T BE CHEAP WITH THE FILTER MATERIALS… YOU DON’T WANNA GET SICK… OR DO YOU?
I think if I was stranded in the middle of nowhere and ran out of water … I could picture making one of the Rube Goldberg emergency filter kits. But I sill would boil all the water on a kettle over an open fire pit. Knowing how to build something like this from basic components like tape, plastic bottles, and a utility knife COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!
Whats the point of doing these kind of articles without testing the water? There are cheap mineral and pH testers that allow you to actually test the effectiveness of your filter with numbers. Tap water straight out of the faucet is clear but has tons of metals and things in it. Just because it is clear doesn’t mean that you are making it safe to drink, it just means that it is clear, which proves nothing. It would make alot of since to use water testers because the worse things are the things that can’t be seen.
I gotta say I’m pretty triggered. The syringe thing and second bottle as a collection chamber was really cool, and I’m glad that you actually washed the stuff first but charcoal is supposed to be f i n e l y g r o u n d and the popsicle sticks are completely useless. A+ on the innovation but the materials and theory behind it was sketchy at best.
That water looks pretty dirty. What he is going to need next is rehydration formula for Cholera! 🍶💀 Has anyone tried SODIS? I had seen a SODIS filter made with a seal a meal bag. A Sealameal is just like a big freezer bag (maybe 10 feet long). You can seal off one end with a freezer bag and duct tape. Fill it up with water, about 10 or 11 gallons. Let it sit on the ground all day in the hot sun. The sunlight will hopefully kill off the bacteria in the water. 🌞 🍶

Great article for the construction of the ‘FILTER’ but ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE to not stress that the FILTERED water MUST BE BOILED to kill off remaining bacteria!!! This is a VERY SIMPLE and fairly effective FILTER, NOT, and I repeat NOT a purification device! Users MUST BOIL THE filtered water BEFORE DRINKING!!!
