This doesn’t work. Mine doesn’t even register in disk mgmt. It is however listed in device mgr but doesn’t show up in dsk mgmt. It opens just fine on another laptop. I find it astonishing that there seems to really be no computer people anywhere I have seen on the net who seem to really understand this issue very well. No offense to the uploader. From what I am seeing this is in fact more often a problem with the host computer and not the hard drive itself. The cable being the issue is even more rare. If an ext HD has opened on your computer for a long time with no issues and then one day it doesn’t, it is likely something to do with the computer, not the HD.
IF IT DOESNT WORK TRY THIS! once you’re on disk management click on the capacity part that says how many gbs the disk has and click on delete volume. for me the option of changing the disk letter wasn’t even there. then click new simple volume and it should give u a little pop up. click next until it’s fully installed. then when u open file explorer you should see it labeled new volume! hope that helps <3
I got to the point where you right click on the drive. The “Change Drive Letter and Paths…” is greyed out. The only options available are the “Delete Volume” and “Help”. I thought sure this would work when I saw it. I have 4 partitions on the drive, all of which say “Healthy; (Primary Partition)” and are respectively as 1.00 GB, 500 GB, 500 GB and 862.02 GB. I’m having the problem of an internal drive that disappears… Some times it’s there, some times it isn’t. It’s a laptop and my power source is not stable: 255w solar and a single 12v 100Ah battery. I used to have 510w, but one of the panels flew off of my rv roof on the road. Also, how can I get my external drives to keep their letters? I have 3 external drives, plus several thumb drives and memory cards, but they always default to the lowest letter passed C, which means when the internal drive disappears, externals end up becoming the D drive, pushing the internal D drive to an E or F. Constantly having to tell Lightroom, Premier, and iTunes which drive letter files are now on, and/or changing the letter in Manager again.

This is stupid really. Have about 200 windows computers all 20H2….. all patched up with latest drivers. Some see the usb hard drive and some do not. The ones that do see it works fine. Others that see it when usb is inserted expects the drive to be formatted first. Then the others do not see it at all. Is my above scenario experience by others? For the computers that do see it fully I do a chkdsk on it and they find no problem at all with it. No bad drive pending error or warning drive will fail and passes SMART test. So I am thinking just maybe I should save the data that is on it and just reformat the whole thing. Years past I did this with a different drive and would format it on the computers that could not see it until formatted….. ok so I format it. Now it works on that pc. But now it only works on that pc………. Wondering if there is a format virus of some sort roaming the network.

5 drives currently connected to my desktop; C: is a 2TB NVME SSD, D: and E: are each internal 1TB HDD SATA for work processing and temp storage (PC came with 1 of these, and the other was an old one that I threw in for the heck of it), F: is a 2TB external HDD for media storage, and G: is an external 2TB SSD for temporary storage while moving files to the F: drive, after cleaning up duplicate and no longer wanted media files. The new C: drive that I just installed was originally a 256g NVME SSD. With all of these drives and all the files being moved around, I went in and named the two internal HDD drives “Upper HDD” and “Lower HDD”, because they are physically mounted one above the other in the case. This is so that I can remember which is which more easily. They retain their Drive letter, but the names give me a better mental picture of what’s being moved to where. The G: drive will be removed after all the files are transferred to the correct locations. Maybe I should invest in a NAS?
I’m having a weirder problem. I have 2 computers, one is Windows 8.1 the other Windows 10. I have an external drive that is a year old on the Windows 8 pc, it runs fine, never had a problem but today it wasn’t showing up in my drive letters. I have quite a few external drives hooked up via a splitter. So naturally i tried bypassing the splitter and hooking it directly into a usb port on the tower. Still nothing. It made that dreaded click though and a message popped up saying can’t recognize drive. HOWEVER, i then plugged it into my Windows 10 pc and it came up instantly no problem and no clicking sounds. So i repeated this several times, same result each time. It suddenly only opens on the Windows 10 pc. And yes on the Windows 8 one i made sure to check if i could assign it a different letter, but still nada. I ran a diskcheck scan on it on the Windows 10 pc and found no problems. What’s going on?
