📹 How to Outrank 99% of Local Businesses on Google (SEO Tier List)
You’ve done everything right, but you still aren’t showing up where you want to be in the Google map pack. Local competitors who …
Depends on your audience. As an ex-marketer for Apple and have grown multiple businesses I can say that not all audiences will be in YouTube. My primary audience are exclusively consuming information in the written form. The type to print articles so they can read on vacation (Wall Street journal, economist, MIT Technological review etc) These type do not want to watch a article of any type. I have 600 articles on YouTube using the help of VidIQ to establish keywords, tags, titles and descriptions etc. also had a articlegrapher, editor, high end equipment so they are all professionally shot; but only have 700 subscribers with minimal lead generation. It has been a time and resource sink. My SEO has brought in 90% of our clients and establishing us as the professionals in the industry. This is how we get recognized for local awards and recognition as well.
SEO is far from dead in 2024 brother… it’s evolving! AI might change the game, but the core principles of search remain the same which is to provide value, building authority, and connect with your audience. I would say YES diversifying strategies like incorporating YouTube is smart, but dismissing SEO altogether? That’s a rookie mistake. Look, the future is about blending the best of both worlds: mastering SEO while leveraging the power of article content. All I will say is Adapt, but don’t abandon!!!!
Good article and makes total sense. Since AI content is flooding the web page creation process and the data is text based SEO is going to be extremely hard to thrive at. Personal branding will more more important than ever. Youtube is obviously great at this since there is a feeling of connectivity with the creator. I’m glad I have focused most of my efforts into making a huge amount of articles. I still create blog posts but they always feel inferior to a good article. Also, for those of you that are feeling apprehensive because article creation seems like a difficult thing to do, just get started and avoid any idea of perfectionism. I look back at my old articles and cringe but they were necessary to get going. Not saying my new articles are the highest quality but they improved immensely from sheer volume and taking feedback from my subscribers along the way. Good luck to you and don’t be a slave to AI tools. Shortcuts always come at a price. Just be yourself and make the content you would enjoy perusal! Also, be extremely patient. Most people give up before they actually have time to succeed at something. Pick something that you will do when times are good and when times are bad and you will have your success along the way!
Very interesting and informative. But I’m 21 and I’m bored with articles everywhere already, I’m so over snippets of information and people jumping all over the place trying to sell me stuff. It’s like a constant stream of 1990s Amercian Infomercials….again… I’m beginning to want information that has more to it, more substance (I’m beginning to sound like my mom). I’m tired of following behind a lot of vids (some really well done, very entertaining, slick and creative etc)…but the overall feeling is information deficit. Constant stream of stuff with no back bone. But i see what you mean
00:00 🚀 Traditional SEO is becoming ineffective due to changes in search engine algorithms. 03:05 💡 AI advancements are reshaping SEO landscape, posing challenges for small businesses. 05:19 🔍 Three main reasons why AI is making SEO less effective: AI-generated search answers, increased content production, and difficulty in acquiring backlinks. 09:20 📺 Embracing YouTube as a marketing platform offers significant advantages over traditional SEO. 14:29 📈 YouTube provides opportunities for long-lasting, engaging content with higher conversion potential. 17:55 🎯 YouTube SEO is simpler and less complicated compared to traditional website SEO. 21:11 🏆 Embracing YouTube gives businesses a competitive edge as many competitors are hesitant to transition to article content.
It’s important to note that YouTube and Google are both part of the same company, Alphabet Inc. While YouTube has been expanding its services, such as taking over Google Podcasts, it serves a different purpose than Google’s search engine. YouTube is primarily a article-sharing platform, and while it has become a significant source of information and entertainment, Google’s search engine remains a fundamental tool for web navigation and information retrieval. The two platforms complement each other and are likely to continue evolving to serve their users in interconnected but distinct ways.
Wow I am certainly quite intuitive when it comes to SEO: I started uploading all my blogs in the forms of articles here on YouTube. Embed the blog link in description. No lie I got 25 visitors in a day which is quite amazing for me. Traffic has been consistent. Honestly it’s a big mistake to sleep on Youtube. 2024 will make or break us SEOs. Gold luck ; )
It’s an interesting point of view and the introduction to AI is actually a fact. I think that reducing SEO to backlinks strategy is restrictive… not to mention that YouTube is owned by Google and it’s not new right? Also, Tiktok is consifered as a prefered option by the new generation when it comes to search for an information. So does SEO become useless in 2024? NO … Does YouTube and Tiktok are becoming a must-have in your communication strategy in 2024 ? YES definitely !
This is a scary scenario as I am just starting out in the online world. My website is in the weight loss niche and I’m almost getting a handle on all of this SEO and keyword research stuff. So, are you saying people are not going to want to dive deeper and do proper searches? What would I even do on YT about weight loss?
Brilliant content. You’re oh so correct. People are ALWAYS looking for that human connection. My YT website does a lot of selling for me. As you said, the call is very different when people find me on YouTube. All the very best, Cheers Rick (AMENDMENT) Yes, ChatGPT can pump out blog articles. Unfortunately, these are ones that sound like a “BAD” copy editor wrote. I’m guilty of writing my “Zero Draft” with ChatGPT, but I spend a few hours fact checking and rewriting the article before posting it to my blog. At this point writing with AI is like the articles – it fools the uninitiated, but those that know real quality, can see through it. And we could get in to the whole academic discussion about access to information vs. critical thinking, but that would make for a very long blog post. Thank you for your thoughts. Cheers Rick
Hi @WesMcDowellInc – great article. What would you say to people who are not keen to “put themselves out there” for all to see. I’ve been runing a travel blog for almost 20 years but like to keep things relatively private (I guess I’m introverted – my blog posts focus on destinations, hotels, etc. rather than myself, and I’m not always travelling)… what would you suggest for someone like me?
I think SEO is still valid on You Tube when people type a search term into the search bar. But as you point out, most articles are being watched by clicking on the recommended list of articles. And that list is based more upon your historical preferences. However, I think the recommended list works more like the 6 degrees of separation rule. If I like perusal articles about dogs but not cats, then YT will compare my viewing behaviour with other viewers who also like dogs but not cats. There is a high degree of overlap between me and another viewer. Simple union overlap of subsets maths. YT will then recommend me a non dog article that other person also likes because of our viewing similarity. For example, I might never have watched articles about bungee jumping, but because my counterpart matches my viewing behaviour by 60% on dog articles, the bungee jumping article they like will be added to my recommended list on the assumption we have similar viewing patterns. YT subscriptions don’t appear to do much these days. They seem to operate more like bookmarks than affecting our recommended list. There are some websites I’ve been subscribed to for years but their new articles don’t appear on my list. I have to manually go back to their home page to view them.
Hi, I do make some articles on YT already, but haven’t really found that clients come from this. It’s probably the type of content… Educational articles on ho to learn motion design (specifically using Blender) are not something a business owner looks up if they need a commercial animation made. If I was looking for more students than that would probably the way to go. What type of content would you suggest to drive those types of B2B clients to me? (or anyone reading this)
You say “Our preference for human connection isn’t going to change.” I think you’re wrong there. I think you’re showing your age with that statement. Definitely true of older generations who have more face to face personal skills. And definitely true of presenters and sales people who like to get up close and personal. But Gen Z and Gen A are actively avoiding personal connections. Their connection is through their tech devices. And many of those onscreen characters are digitally generated, particularly in computer games. They are growing up to trust a computer character more than a real human. So don’t be surprised if younger people prefer to watch AI generated character content.
Agreed 100%. This will be a shock for my customers, but as I began my pivot months ago they will have to do the same. It’s funny that every time I got a call, back in the early 2000’s, stating ‘he’s’ #1 one and ‘he’ doesn’t deserve it… I deserve and want #1 because I’m the best… I would think to myself… BUT you’re NOT doing business, you’re just throwing a website on the web and expecting the world to beat your door down with $. However, I sold them SEO anyway because they wouldn’t have considered doing business-sales-offers-marketing-landing pages-content-etc anyway.
So true, your thoughts on YouTube articles (and searches). Even more than so true. People really do not want to see and listen to AI B-roll crapeos. They want a human. If they spend way too much time on YT, they can’t stand AI generated content at all and will punish any website that does that faceless AI stuff. By the way, your copy is really compelling.
I hear you… BUT; Google will be shooting themselves in the ‘Pocket Book’ if they really do this as most of their revenue comes from businesses paying for Google ads. I mean, why bother paying for G. ads if they just provide their own “AI Answers” … Still, a transformation to YouTube is a good and necessary segue. Everything in life changes, and AI will also provide opportunities = for those who dare.
TThank you so much. I really agree witth everything you said. I am rebuilding my Yoututbe website. My problem is most of the people that find me and call me are customers of people that spoke to someone in my corporation already. That person didn’t close the deal. I want fresh new people taht want tot sign up with me instead.
One issue I see with this method, is what exactly will we be selling to our SEO clients if SEO is no longer useful? I doubt 90% of my clients want to start a YouTube website. Does that mean all SEO services, such as mine, should start promoting YouTube SEO instead of traditional SEO? Their websites are still going to need customers, some are e-commerce sites, so why would they want their customers to go to YouTube. It’s a great idea for some types of businesses, mainly YouTubers, but I don’t see how this helps traditional SEO companies? For example, let’s say I put all my time into creating an amazing YouTube website about how to optimize their website and promote their website online, what’s the point if it’s obsolete?
can’t wait to start a website for my art and creativity. Should I make a new separate website just for it? this account is just my surfing YouTube account. I don’t use it as an upload website and I’ve had my account like this for years. I thought of making a new gmail account just for having a dedicated YouTube website for my artwork and all things crafty and creative.
Google is only interested in ad revenue. Providing relevant search results is a secondary consideration at best. YouTube being owned by Google means it is a matter of time. The ad blocker ban is YouTube circling the drain so of course I’m going to ChatGpt. If I could set up a phone conveniently, I’d ditch Google all the way.
Ai has nothing to do with backlink power – the issue is that website owners (that own decent websites) won’t let you publish for free! Also too many wannabees have websites/services that nobody wants to begin with, so promoting a dead horse is just going to fail, – people won’t/can’t let go of that crap idea, that’s the No1 problem today. Blog posting may be No3 most popular method, but blog owners won’t let you in for free – always ask the question “Why is your website different, so why should I visit it”, so the more traffic a website/blog gets, the more difficult it will be to get on it.
Only one problem with you tube tho… its no good for buisness to business sales. Great for consumer retail but in general not b2b. Would a construction project manager use it to search for carpenters or roofers?probably not. Or an architect use it to search for manufacturers of windows?Probably not. If you’re selling a consumer item then it’s great. But a lot of b2b opportunities don’t exist. I can’t imagine one of the aforementioned project managers or architects using YouTube to find a supplier.
I rarely comment stuff, but I´m not quite following. Content creation and article is kind of a well known thing already. How I see it, SEO is supposed to be a different way to gain leads and customers WITHOUT creating article content (partly)? I was a bit more interested in that aspect of it. No disrespect or anything, I appreciated the article and very much enjoyed it, I”am simply trying to highlight a different point of view. 🙂 What is your (or you reading) view on this? Will articlecontent be the ONLY major way to gain customers within seo/marketing in the future (your guess)?
AI chat responses are popular at the moment because they are free to use and clutter free. But at some point these AI engines will have to generate revenue. That means ads of some form will have to be included in the responses. Or a monthly subscription will have to be paid to be ad free. Even AI is looking for kerching!!
Wes, first of all, thank you for this article, it gave a different perspective on AI. Second, will it confuse the algorithm if I just started making articles of several topics? I have a service business that ranges from babysitting to Notary Public, to selling water systems. What would you suggest I start with?
I somewhat agree to this. This would not be the best strategy for local SEO businesses. Also, blogging although it might be harder to get featured in the SERPs when you do the traffic will be much more qualified and more likely to convert into leads/sales. Yes people like to watch article content but people do also like to read blogs. Depends on where that person is in the sales funnel. YT is mainly for How to tutorials which is usually the top of funnel. IMO the goal is to get website visitors and sales. I have never bought a thing off anyone I searched a how to tutorial on YT for but I have ended up onto their sales funnels.
Im still trying to figure it all out. Was so impressed by the AI features that are available. I think you are correct that Google will make it where Chat GPT is the go to way for people to get the information that they want. Bloggers will have to be cross posting on the social media platforms more in order to be seen and will have to pay for ads. I turned my ads off seeing that I need to have the products in place before I try to grab my audience. Talk about putting the cart before the horse. I did that. So stepping back to create the products and determine where my audience will be after I get the website established. Thanks for teaching us through your articles. Looking forward to perusal more from you. Cathy 😊
Love your content Wes! When it comes to local seo for YouTube what are your recommendations All my long form content is geared toward local searches and your right generative search results from google show my articles I will keep uploading articles it’s a blue ocean around here no one else is doing it, All my articles are educational and informative I stay away from going straight to the sell is a huge turn off for me
Give it another year and you won’t be able to tell the difference between an AI generated talking head presentation and that of a real person. I also think we are not far off before you’ll be able to search across YouTube and get a bullet point summary of each article in the search results. You will literally never have to watch the entire article again.
Agree but not completely, Organic traffic still valuable, but according to your services, I must say YES, your article content can help you gain more valuable clients because people who are reaching out to you know that you are a valuable person in this field and you are the best person to get services from, So SEO is not waste 🙂 and your idea to make space in to Youtube is commendable, Thanks
This is an interesting approach that is a great way to grow your business – but this isn’t possible (feasible) for most small and mid-sized businesses. My question is; if SEO is a Waste of Time in 2024… and Youtube isn’t universally viable, given the necessary time and costs involved, what do you recommend for the small/mid-sized business to have visibility online? ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
This is the first time I subscribed to a website the second after perusal the first article of yours. Everything you said is so much in line with my observations and what I hear from people building successful brands on social media. Also, I love the way you created this piece of content. Great, great job! — Heading over to the next one… 😉
Not everyone is going to want to be on camera and post themselves on YouTube. I kind of agree with you that we should attempt to adopt producing article content, but I suck on camera, to be fair, why do I have to be on camera if I’m not cut for it, and many others aren’t. I think SEO specialists won’t be out of work for long time, and I mean specialists, not posers.
So, what you are saying is after 8 years of doing stuff on YouTube, the odds essentially just pivited hugely in my favor rn. Okay, I very much take that. xD Thanks so much for the super informative content, as always! Def one of my Top “just info, no BS” websites I regularly watch. 🙂 And that comes from someone who does Sh*tposting for a Job haha.
As a freelancer in Marketing, I feel exhausted – the perfect YouTube strategy, the perfect Insta strategy, the perfect homepage … 🤪 In the end I have to do a lot myself and earn some money at the same time. I love perusal those kind of articles, but making them is not as easy as it seems. And YouTube is constantly changing the algorithm, you have a lot of competition and content should be of high value – all in all not a realistic choice for me.
I read the title and thought: “thank goodness”. I don’t want to research and cleverly weave in relevant keywords (though I have a personal blog, not a website to sell things, so 😛) EDIT: With this new strategy, you need capable hardware and software. That might make it less accessible for some, whereas the old strategy only really requires a decent internet connection.
I find that, although you tube is entertaining and educational, the moment the add pops up mid sentence, my concentration is gone. It is so annoying that the message is missed completely. I didnt finish perusal this – my mind was elsewhere. At least with reading text, I can finish without being disrupted.
I’ve been perusal you for years, Brother, and this article is one of your best yet and by far this message is the most important message I’ve seen or listened to about the direction of organic search and digital marketing in a very long time. Your aim on this one is deadly accurate. God help those that don’t take this advice to heart.
6:03 article sells faster then seo, seo inlocuit de ai si ca scris articole si ca raspuns la intrebari 8:18 oamenii prefera sa se uita la un article decat sa citeasca despre un subiect in cazul gen z e categoric dar interesant shiftul de consum si la celelalte generatii 9:15 se uita la mai multe clipuri cu tine si accelereaza procesul know like trust al unui om
Great article, Wes! I’ve always believed that Google search would eventually evolve beyond its current form. While traditional search engines will likely persist for the next decade, we’re heading toward a future where AI-driven fact-checking and real-time answers will dominate. You’re absolutely right about the significance of YouTube ranking. As content creators, understanding how to optimize for YouTube’s algorithms is crucial. Additionally, PPC (pay per click) and social media ads are becoming increasingly vital for businesses, not just large corporations but also medium-sized enterprises. Interestingly, Google’s revenue heavily relies on PPC. They’ve been cautious about fully embracing AI in search because they want users to continue searching and clicking on ads. However, I wonder if their next move will involve allowing businesses to pay for visibility in AI-generated search results. Your observation about people preferring human presence in articles is spot-on. As AI adoption grows, viewers will seek answers in visual formats, even if the content was initially generated by AI. It’s fascinating to consider how SEO specialists will adapt their strategies to optimize content specifically for AI-driven search engines.
Your point is too clickbait and to sum it up by saying that SEO is a complete waste of time: no and no. You’re talking about YouTube, so that’s a bit of SEO, isn’t it? Title, description, CTR, visitor, retention Artificial intelligence is going to be everywhere and we need to change our SEO habits: we agree. We should be thinking more in terms of AI-SEO, if you’ll pardon the expression. Personally, the message I give my clients goes beyond SEO or YT. I advise them to do everything possible and to send as many signals as possible : YT, IN, X, TikTok, PDF, Podcast …. Ultimately, I think those who know SEO and the importance of external signals linked to brand awareness will be better off. FIY: TikTok Beats Google as the Top Search Engine for Gen Z
I honestly don;t know if we all are not massive SEO experts now and if all youtubers say is not just giant load of crap. For youtube SEO you need to have loads of relevant high quality articles and you cannot bring them on website becuase of dumbest thing youtube does is that when article finishes you get to see random recomendations for more articles to watch. Lets say your business is about growing organic apples. You post your youtube articles on website about that just to have follow up articles recomendations how to clean dog shit in park 🙂
I’ll add some more from my own experience. Keywords in business name – Wes correctly mentioned that it is against Google guidelines to use those. Yes, and if your competitor is doing this, you can do something about that. Just edit their listing, Google will usually accept your change. Worked 8/10 times. Are you not appearing in Google Maps, due to the competiton sharing the same address? According to Google guidelines you can differentiate your address by adding a door number or a floor (in case of a multi-level building) in to the address field. It truly does help.
I’ve been trying to figure out what your perfect website packages looked like for $10k. Your website is the best resource for entrepreneurs like myself! You’ve helped raise the bar, thank you. I want to eventually get to where you are now, but for now would love to have website packages like you once had. Where people could just buy it for a set price. Just need to figure out the best way of doing that.
Thankyou so much Wes, i have learned so much from you! I have a question, i know how to optimize a local service business’s online presence by all the rules you said and more also But how to optimize a local product business like home decor store or a furniture store? Is the ecommerce website only solution? What if they don’t want to sell online yet?
Subscribed & thanks so much for this article! Super insightful! I did have a question if you don’t mind me asking – We are a photo booth company that’s a service-based business (without a physical location). We are unable to choose “Photo Booth” as a primary GBP category because it requires a physical location, so we chose “Party Equipment Rental Service” instead. Any thoughts on how we can get “Photo Booth” as a primary without a getting a physical location? Thank you so much!
You are absolutely wonderful! I can’t describe it but you’re so helpful and inspiring. I’m trying to build my photography website again. I feel like with it being 2024 I have to use Ai because it will do a better job than I would. But I’ve already spent money on a hosting with Hostinger. I’ve seen things like Relume but it’s a monthly cost. Is it possible to use this for a month or so and then cancel once I’ve built my website with it? Or does it disappear when the thing ends? I can’t keep an upkeep with that. As I’m not a web designer. I feel like I should be with tools like that haha. Unless there are other solutions for this haha.
Dude, I’ve done all of these steps, plus more. But it seems that there is a local competitor near me, who : 1) Doesn’t have their GMB profile even complete. 2) Doesn’t have the city mentioned anywhere in their GMB profile 3) Has a 3 page website, mentioning the city once 4) Has less reviews than my business (with the last review being over 2 years ago) yet, they are still not only outranking me, but also majority of the local competition here. I genuinely am lost at this point.
I liked this style of article, it reminds me of a YouTuber who rates different foods from A-F. Unfortanutely, I have to disagree with you on KW in GBP & Geo-tagging images. While geo-tagging can be time consuming (without even mentioning optimization, and adding brand, description, etc) it is definitely worth it. On both GBP and on on-page content. I would also probably put Internal in A, but I feel like this is a more advanced technique for people who can visualize and understand how linking works and how to properly do it in relation to the hierarchy. Lastly, I’m glad you put Backlinks so far down, it really is so time-consuming, difficult, and after Google’s update – as they said – kind of irrelavant & a waste of time. I hate it 😪😄
It might sound confusing, but you can never truly outrank local businesses on Google, and they can’t always outrank you either. Here’s why: Google promotes local businesses based on proximity. Even if your Google My Business profile isn’t the best, if a customer is just 100 meters away from you, Google will likely promote your business, maybe not first, but possibly second. For instance, if Marta is only 100 meters away from me, I might appear in the first place in her search results. However, if Roger is 2 kilometers away at the same time, I could appear much lower, maybe around the 6th or 7th place, or possibly even lower.
Interesting how you make backlinks like a bad apple, like do it when you have time. I just dealt with a local business who has literally done everything on their GMB, like what you said, perfectly optimized onpage, and yet it was all the way down and drowned by competitors. The moment I start hitting it with backlinks, nothing else, lo and behold, it gets to top 3.
Hey @WesMcDowellInc great article! Quick question about dedicated service pages for each service. If a multi-location service area business (SAB) has a dedicated landing page for each service area (IE LA, New York, Austin, etc…) does Google only crawl that landing page attached to the GBP’s website link? Meaning each location (let’s go with Austin) should have it’s own dedicate Austin (service page) – something like /location/austin/austin-tire-repair or would Google crawl the generic service pages not attached to the GBP landing page like /services/tire-repair? Been something Im trying to figure out – can’t get any solid data on it. Either way, keep up the great work, articles are always informative and helpful!
You can change your business name with a simple DBA and submitting that to Google. Don’t need to change everything. Also if you build citations with the DBA name; when the Google employee looking at the change request checks, they usually will just approve it based on other sites and the DBA which cost like $99.
