  • FOMO. It’s real and scary. Look at drivers around you when you’re at a red light (unless you yourself are one of these) – most people have to check things on their phones. Just yesterday actually saw a couple in their vehicle scrolling their feeds (yes, including the driver) while going down the road. Of course, driver’s attention wasn’t given to driving and he kept slowing down, speeding up and weaving. It’s scary what we’ve become… Even at dinner time, in restaurants, families, people no longer interact with each other – they have to scroll to see what they may be missing when what they’re truly missing is who is in front of them…

  • Now, hear me out. After perusal this, do NOT go berserk and purge all the apps and delete all accounts. You WILL have withdrawal symptoms and the reentry to all these apps will be worse than your current scenario. Just like you train up with moderation so your body gets used to the workouts, train out of social media with moderation to be successful in the long run 🙂

  • Actually I recently got my first iPhone, which also happens to be the first smartphone I ever got. I used to own a Lenovo tablet before so when I switched to iPhone, I had to install all the apps again and when that happened, I realized how many apps simply don’t need the permission to send me notifications. Now only a handful of apps are configured to notify me of something and that has benefitted me greatly.

  • When it comes to the user side, social media mainly serves two purposes: either it’s your job, or you’re trying to make it your job. The other purpose is to show that you have a superior or better life than others, and you want to display it and receive attention for it. Outside of that, it’s completely useless—who needs it apart from those two reasons? I use technology intensively, and I change phones very regularly. I love taking photos and articles, etc., but I don’t have any social media accounts.

  • Hii.. Mr. Boss… I have deleted my instagran for 20 months now, i dont use any otger social media app, all notifications are turned off, my phone stays on Do Not Disturb mode for tge whole day… Doing this for 6 months now, and it feels good … And i will continue doing it… Thank you for this article btw ❤️

  • Color? Whats that. I have it in grayscale so nothing is “eye catching” I have been aware of the downfall of social media for a couple years which is why I have never scrolled on any useless short form apps. The only real social media I have is YouTube. And yes I have been way too attached to YouTube long form articles and I’m trying to stop it. It’s just tough given the fact that it’s always in arms reach. I am truly scared for this generation when people actually have to grow up and get a job for a sustainable life.

  • My phone’s battery was too low, then suddenly shut down, then I connected the charger and turned on the phone, as soon as my phone turned on it immediately flooded with vibrating notification and shut down again because of low battery and so much power consumption because of vibrating notifications 🥲 Btw, it was Samsung Galaxy S21 5G which has 4000 mah battery 😢

  • The precious time you spare on their useless reels is their source of income, they earn money from ur views, while ur progress slows, their speeds up, and then they go on vacations and places and live their life, while most people just watch them and waste their time instead of fulfilling their dreams, social media is a great trap.

  • 11:10 here’s the problem, i don’t use x for talking to friends (neither in insta or Facebook) i use it for update for upcoming things like marvel movie or ps games and they not only give the info but even criticize it and push politics in it that leads me to enter it indefinitely. Like they literally push too much apples and oranges in these tweets that makes me very hard ignore it cuz i want info not bs and this app including others mix it instead of separate it. So i can’t turn off notification for info that i literally downloaded for. Its the algorithm and users issues that try too put extremely bad take and people accept that blindly x uploads this to all users

  • As someone who designs slot games, I can say that the information about how games “change” if you have lost, or are learning about you and modifying the odds is wrong, and also illegal in almost every jurisdiction. Yes there are compensated slot machines in the UK, which is where MWTB is from, but these are specific to the UK (and some in Spain) and are absolutely not in Vegas, or almost any other jurisdiction. Just wanted to clear that up.

  • 0:40 this is exactly the reason i completely disabled the official facebook app on my phone (can’t uninstall it cause samsung preinstalled it on my phone) and use a third party app where i have all notifications disabled, this way i can look at facebook whenever i feel like it and don’t get sucked in with notifications

  • Why allow Facebook or any other social media to send you push notifications? Are you so eager to see if your aunt you haven’t met for 7 years liked your post? Just block 🔔 for all social media. Allow only the messaging apps you contact people (or work) and the email service you’re using. Easy peasy.

  • Dear Arun, i really love your articles and your content. But to be honest… Please don’t take my comment too personally. THIS IS NOT HATE! I think this article gives off such a “desperate for views” vibe. It might be too much of a conspiracy theory, your taking everything too seriously, like everything on the internet is working against us. All trough there is a lot of Truth in your article, of course there is, because thats just how the internet is, it is against us…i prefer the kind of more chill tech articles, not a “conspiracy theory” one that makes me think everything is soo evil. <3

  • Wow it is really that bad? I don’t really have any social media because of this and many other reasons. I have YouTube though and I have found myself doomscrolling a couple times even here. So with what you said, I have now turned off my YouTube log so I don’t get any personal articles😀. (Yes you can do that)

  • There is also something else these reel type of apps do. Everytime my friend sent me a reel and I decide to check it out, I only want to check that particular reel and exit it right after. But the app, after finishing the reel, either shows an animation of the reel going halfway upwards to entice you to scroll up, or automatically scrolls itself to keep you hooked, which for some reason infuriates me and makes me want to exit then and there.

  • I’ve deleted all of my social media accounts (except YouTube) years ago. Even on YouTube, I’ve turned my watch history off to avoid random Shorts and articles feeds on Home/Shorts screen/tabs. As my watch history is off there are no recommendations and both Home & Shorts tabs are empty. articles/Shorts on Subscriptions tab from my subscriptions only which I hide after perusal them which keeps Subscriptions tab empty as well if nothing new. Also have kept all the notifications turned off.

  • A while back when I updated my iPhone to the update where they changed the default notification sound, they also changed the default vibration pattern for almost all app notifications to be the same one that iMessage uses. This was driving me insane because whenever I felt the vibration, my brain assumed it was a friend or family member sending me a message, and those messages are usually important. I am SO glad they reversed that, because it really messed with me 😭

  • Arun saying he’ll be using Iphone 16 (Apple) as his main phone in last article but 99% of this article he’s on Samsung fold (Samsung). Just shows how Samsung is innovative lowkey. Iphone 16 with no Apple intelligence is just Iphone 15 prinkled with another BUTTON & slightly better features (That already existed in Samsung & other phones already)

  • Arun Excellent article used to have friends and family only. Then i wound up getting sociopaths So i started to uninstall.I hope many more start fixing this.Because some of us like having a life.Once it’s time to go is when that happens.I also believe less of that is more Important and definitely more Healthy.Again Great article.💯✌️🤦

  • Hey Arun, if you’re reading this, don’t take it personally—but what you describe is the same strategy YouTubers use! They craft the perfect thumbnail, catchy titles, and fill their articles with motion, quick camera zooms, and angle shifts. Add in subtitles, lighting tricks—everything to grab attention. But think about it: how many hours of views do you rack up? Now consider how much of that time could be spent learning, enjoying family time, sports, or hanging out with friends. Creators are at the heart of social media, capturing so much of our attention.

  • day 1 of asking Mrwhosetheboss to review this really stupid android bug: in settings, theres a language called “English one” with really strange zalgo text, and selecting that language will first break all text, then it will black screen your phone and you get the “Cant load android system, your data may be corrupt.” and at the bottom it says “NEED TO WIPE USERDATA, REASON IS: rescueparty” my phone cant access recovery mode, my pc cant access its files and the only options are “Try again” or “Factory reset” which works, but it resets the entire device. all of this because of a stupid language setting. this happens on many android devices, and ive not seen a SINGLE fix for this other than factory reset. Can you please review this and find a working fix with software or pc stuff? im currently experiencing this problem and i dont know what to do. my data is not backed up. Thanks!

  • I really don’t get how can people be addicted to social platforms.. I mean, Youtube – okay, you watch content you like and can learn few things. But endless scrolling on Facebook/Tiktok/Instagram.. That’s nuts. I’ve never used any of these platforms except Instagram so I can see what are the next events in my area..

  • These are the reasons I don’t have TikTok, FB, X, Instagram, or (insert name of unknown platform here). I have YouTube but I’ve turned off watch history, and limited notifications. I have a Patreon but that isn’t designed the same way as social media platforms and has so many bugs that I wouldn’t want to spend my whole life on there… I recognised the danger and took steps to remediate.

  • The “Beast” from the inside? Really? Well, I’m unsubscribing. You had a moment to actually talk about something real. Instead, it feels more like you’re validating the “necessary evil” and saying we should just take accountability for ourselves. What’s really sick is how all the big YouTubers are too scared to call out bullshit when they see it. You have a platform of nearly 20 million followers on here alone. Imagine the good you could do in the world? But sure, play it safe. Collect that easy money.

  • a lot of these thing they added to make you stay, has made me leave or not both with them any more. I block notifications years ago when I saw how useless they are, TikTok I found it to be pretty mindless content so don’t even use it anymore. Facebook shows me way too much stuff I not interested in and X, I nearly given up on. I’m barely on any of these platform anymore. YouTube is the only one I end up spending too long on, because I do feel it show me useful stuff and subscript feed pretty much still only show you who u sub / follow.

  • ✨ Tip to reduce phone time: 1. The more extreme approach: shift all your social media, Reddit, YouTube, and similar apps to a separate device, like an iPad mini. 2. The simpler approach: keep all your apps on your phone, but turn off lock screen notifications, only allow essential app notifications, and remove app icons from your home screen. Both methods encourage you to use these apps intentionally, rather than being pulled in by the brain’s impulse-driven, “gambling” behavior 🙂

  • This is why i’ve started ditching social networks. I basically only have Twitter now. Unless you count YouTube. I deleted Instagram, deleted TikTok, uninstalled Facebook, never had anything else. Although – I use a clever trick to remove these notification tricks. I set up a custom notification sound for each app, sometimes even making it myself. And I use a notification reader so I always get my notifications read out to me. That way I know if it’s worth my attention or not.

  • This is why foreplay works. Anticipation of sex is more important than sex itself. Note : Sopolsky didn’t do this experiment. He spoke about it in his lectures Also.. why we get excited by notifications is because the brain is a predictive engine like ChatGPT. Predicting the world and making judgement of good and bad is a survival mechanism. The brain is like mid journey constantly generating the world around you based on senses as a prompt. Most of the world we see is generated, hence it is not always perfect, just like mid journey. Predictive coding isn’t the only mechanism. But it is interesting.

  • Arun, have YOU ever noticed how you edit your articles? One simply doesn’t need a million transitions, glowing text and effects for a tech article. A little bit of introsepction first, goes a long way – if YOU really cared, that is. It’s very easy to criticise others on their expense, but very hypocritical when you have violated this yourself! Regards

  • Intermittent reinforcement was coined by B.F. Skinner in the 50’s. Behaviorists have known that it was the most effective in maintaining behaviors for more than 70 years. Coincidentally, one of the pioneers of behaviorism, John B. Watson, became a pioneer in modern advertisement and developed many of the strategies companies use to successfully promote their products.

  • Never been on tick tok. But Youtube put that scroll feature on their shorts. Flippin hate that feature. middle of perusal a vid and I see a hair on my screen – try to wipe it off and another article I never asked for starts playing. I am like WTF. Of course, never used Tick Tok so had no reference. Just thought bad programming. At least Youtube fixed it and when I swipe back to the article I actually wanted to see it saved my place (few months ago it would start over from the beginning, and I stopped perusal shorts for a month or so just because of that). Hair on my screen meant a short I only sort of wanted to watch in the first place, started over. It was driving me crazy. I don’t understand nor care to understand the Tick Tok meta. But as Youtube has tried to emulate it, it at first damaged the platform and is now making it slightly better. I also don’t care for gambling, so that dopamine hit is different for me.

  • 8:57 Tiktok always annoys me… it feels like I’m in a box… I don’t like those apps… I like to have 2 monitors with different things on them and constantly doing something while there’s a article in the background… Facebook can sometimes get me tho if my classes are boring… I should probably do homework instead…

  • This really helps me out, I’ve been trying to read a book for the longest and I’ve been struggling to do that because I always have my phone in my hand, if it’s not Netflix, it’s YouTube or facebook or snap chat. I’m alway looking and scrolling on something. It’s really not beneficial other than things that learn on YouTube, but other than that it’s just mindless, time wasting scrolling for nothing for hours. This article helped me more than you know. Instead of scrolling for hours like usual, I got up today and handled my responsibilities as I usually do. I had no distractions. Thanks again for the article I hope it helps more people.

  • What I noticed, that even if you methodically go through the notification settings in the app, disabling most of them, two-three updates down the line they branch out new notification types from the existing ones, which suddenly again starts bombarding you with notifications until you turn them off. Personally I disabled all notifications of social apps on the OS level. If there’s something really important happening, I get to know on other websites… eg. the person calls me.

  • I can just imagine what other tortures those poor monkeys go through. Having seen some of the experiments, which are just actual torture, I’m withdrawing from social media as much as possible, and hearing Arun talk about it in such a business usual unaware fashion, he’s gone down many notches, and I’ll be very wary of future articles. I’m vegan, so I’m doing as much as humanly possible to not contribute to animal abuse, but it’s so frustrating to see billions of people don’t care 😢

  • Thanks to this article i deleted x from my devices. It constantly was sucking me in but I only revived articles from Ukrainian war, illegal immigrants and people dying when i was only following tech and science accounts. I’m glad i made this decision because now I have more time to think about future decisions small and big ones.

  • Social media, while offering unprecedented connectivity, is often blamed for eroding the art of meaningful conversation. The platforms prioritize brevity and immediacy, encouraging users to communicate through short, often superficial exchanges that lack the depth and nuance of in-person dialogue. Rather than fostering thoughtful discussion, social media can amplify polarizing viewpoints and lead to impulsive reactions. Emojis, likes, and retweets replace the richness of verbal expression, reducing complex emotions to simplified signals. Moreover, the constant distractions of notifications and scrolling mean conversations, even when initiated, are often fragmented and interrupted. People become more focused on curating their online personas than engaging authentically, resulting in shallow interactions. This shift diminishes the value of listening, reflecting, and responding thoughtfully—core components of meaningful conversation. In this digital age, the art of conversation is in danger of being overshadowed by the allure of quick, surface-level exchanges that rarely lead to deeper understanding or connection.

  • This is actually so true though. Every time I wake up I check YouTube and Reddit and usually I see the red number next to the bell which gives me the neuron activation. The bigger the number, the bigger the feeling. The actual notifications themselves aren’t even that exciting, it’s just somebody commenting on my post or something

  • 0:00 Nope. No thanks. I choose life. But also, I hypothesize that article uploads like these are just as much part of the problem, to say the least. Hell, attaching ad runs to the uploads says it all. That’s the only purpose I’ve given this comment. I’m posting it as the ad run remains paused. Even before the 0:00. Neither author or comment of the subject matter has convinced me that there’s even something to prove. No crtic nor content creator/compiler/curator(?) seem to contribute what the algorithm tries recommending & what the creation’s context intends to conform here, whether if making it makes sense. Even we have to be assumed as a numeric value to the “end product” being issued to a public market. Whereas the producer has obliged to assume this by a default. Not to point out the distubrances it correlates, but rather that my unphased perceptions reflecting as much inconveniences me. I am dissatisfied, though candidly I’m okay with it. I don’t feel appalled or reactive so much as the greater internet majority reacts to the socials or even the news reels at their fluttering whim. I’ve as much of this moment to input my capacities & needs, whether or not any of the comment above ever made sense. But thank you anyway. I’ve itched & managed to feed this thought of mine.

  • I am more annoyed by the creators who support these kinds of apps. Faking information or to spread hate because it gets more views. Which is why I still like YouTube and hope they never change. You have control inside YouTube. I don’t even know how to search for stuff properly on instagram without cringe

  • The amount of dopamine-elevating elements you use in this article is actually a parody of what you basically said to inform us about the problem with sm.. At least you give the warning on your T-shirt. Besides that, I enjoyed every normal article of yours so much more than this one. There is so much going on here I am close to throwing up by the amount of action here.

  • someone once some years ago asked me “why do you think a slot machine has a LAN cable in the back?” 95% of all notifications are junk and useless. a good notifications settings management is crucial. but you can just read them and swipe them out 🙂 i have one poker app that is full screen and a bit harder to exit

  • Pro tip. Always have a reason why you log in on any platform. Never make logging in an automatic response action. Do that thing and leave. For second layer of protection, set app restriction timers. This way your phone will automatically kick you off the app when the time is up. Never add more timevor disable the timer. Even for a day because a single day may became multiple days.

  • I love your articles and you seem like a very cool person. But this one comes off very disingenuous. You make your living from a platform that does all the things you were talking/warning about. It would be like you creating a article about how the cigarette companies are all terrible but you make your living growing tobacco…..

  • I actually thank Elon Musk for ruining twitter, it has now become a lifeless place filled with recycled contents with nonexistent comment sections because the comments are also filled with recycled contents, bot accounts and OF girl, then engagement baits, fake interactions for likes, etc. Made me quit and not want to go back ever.

  • The dopamine for anticipation is real. When I’m looking or bidding on rare shoes or rare idm parts. The hunt is more of a rush and then when I get them they sit in my basement for however long lol. That’s why I stopped being addicted to buying stuff and I’m now addicted to saving money. So much better 😂

  • No societal level change in this scummy business practice will ever happen if you leave things at an individual level. At this point these companies have been tried publicly and sentenced for doing this, yet nothing has changed. There’s literally no one alive that’s claiming: “social media is good for you, actually”, it’s the necessary evil for most people or just addicted habit. If you want things to change, you need legislation in some degree at this point. Other than that, nice article, thanks for sharing it.

  • This is for sure one of your best articles. Not only is the psychology and science behind this very interesting, but the storytelling and pacing of this article are also perfect. You explained everything incredibly well—and the comparisons you made felt logical and fluent. I’d absolutely love to see more articles of this type in the future!

  • As a UX designer, all this is something we actively think and practice. However using psychology to streamline valuable processes in different industries is very different from making monkeys out of social media users. I never wanted to join the social media giants as a professional and this solidified it.

  • uni student here and I just want to say that doomscrolling is sooo real, I once woke up 8:00am on a weekend and after taking a piss I sat on the edge of my bed to watch a few tiktoks, I only regained realized I had been sitting the whole day at around 7:00 pm when my roommate got back from playing football.

  • I am not as effected by doomscrolling as i dont use vertical formatted media, generally my phone gives notifications 5-6 business days late, so if i get a notification i know its already too late. And i dont really care about that general corner of the internet lol, also if somebody asks “for my snap” i say “I’m not depressed thank you very much” in a mild joking tone

  • You talk about social media apps minimising friction to staying in the app and maximise the friction to leaving. I personally find the opposite. I find facebook for example makes it so that, every time there is a group post I want to review/interact with the comments, I have to click on the “top comments” drop down, change it to “all comments” and then it doesn’t even show all the comments. So much friction that I have all but stopped using facebook, if it’s easier to scroll past what I want to interact with than it is to actually interact with it,I just leave. I don’t want to scroll past the group post/comments and see a whole lot of adds and AI generated garbage… I wanted to read the comments and see the information that the social media apps is supposed to be for… the lowest friction option is to leave. I must be a minority because clearly this model works, but it is so disfunctional.

  • The sad thing is that there is absolutely no reason to think playing a slot machine many many times will mean you’ll win eventually. That’s not how probabilities work. The probability you win each individual time is exactly the same, no matter how many times you play, because it’s always the same chance. The trick is that the probability you’ll lose 100 times may be low, but the probability you lose on the 101th try is exactly the same as the 100th, and the 99th etc.

  • This is the best article I’ve ever seen on YouTube. I’ve just had my teen kid watch it. All I can say, as a parent, is thank you, Arun. These are the messages we need to send to our kids right now. When I’m having trouble figuring out why my kid is in a certain mood, I eventually realize it has more to do with her phone and tablet than anything going on in the real world. Because that is her real world. And that is a real damn problem.

  • It feels weird to me because I do not recognise half the behaviours in this article. I do already have notifications turned off for social media (My reasoning is that I don’t want to see when idiots reply to my posts… That mostly happens on Twitter), but I also find it very easy to leave social media when I’m done. Maybe it’s because I only use websites never really use the apps unless I want to check a specific account or post? I dunno but it feels very different to me than what is described here.
