In 1982, DMC was placed into receivership, resulting in a reduced production rate until the end of May. Consolidated International acquired unsold and partially assembled cars in November 1982, bringing back workers to complete the remaining cars on the assembly line. The remaining completed 1982 model year cars were re-VINed into 1983 models, resulting in an estimated production of 8, 975 cars. The DeLorean, a luxury car, features unusual construction details such as gull-wing doors, unpainted stainless-steel body panels, and a rear-mounted engine.

The body design was a product of Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, drawing on his 1970 Porsche Tapiro concept car. The DeLorean is paneled in brushed SS304 austenitic stainless steel, and all DeLoreans are left factory uncovered by paint or clearcoat, except for three cars plated in 24-karat gold. Painted DeLoreans do exist, but they were painted after the cars were purchased from the factory.

Why was DeLorean so slow?

The DeLorean was designed for highway cruisers, with tall gear ratios and tuned for emissions rather than power. While the speed was decent compared to other vehicles, modern cars have better performance due to 5-speed manual transmissions and the lack of a lock-up torque-converter. However, the DeLorean has fantastic low-end torque and can go faster than 88mph. The 85mph speedometer was a government mandate to discourage excessive speeding to conserve fuel.

DeLorean reported a top speed of around 130 mph, with many owners reportedly going 110-120mph using phone GPS for measurement. The DeLorean’s low-end torque and ability to go faster than 88mph make it a popular choice for those seeking a reliable and efficient vehicle.

Can a DeLorean go 88 MpH?

The movie DeLorean, a Porsche, was designed to travel at 88 mph, which was impossible due to the car’s engine. To achieve this, a sticker on the dashboard was added, giving the prop vehicle an extra 10 mph boost. The DeLorean, equipped with a 2. 85L PRV V6 engine and 130 hp, was not the sportiest sounding car on the road, so the movie producers replaced the original car sounds with recordings of a V8 Porsche 928.

  • That thing is hideous, but I do kind of like the brake light. I’m assuming (or at least hoping) that they started with a beater. If so, a rebody in and of itself is not a bad idea, considering how expensive replacement panels are and that it’s sort of going back into production anyway. It’s not a super rare car.

  • He just licking his chops knowing that he got a “FOOL” in his shop. Looking at him the only bible verse that comes to mind is ” A FOOL AND HIS MONEY WILL SOON PART” . This fool thinks making or having a lot of money is about him.NO! It’s about leaving a legacy for your children.# believe the white man when it comes to your money.
