  • Funny how so many people seem to think small spaces need to be devoid of objects or have really SPARSE designs. I find having interesting, well-curated objects keeps the eye moving, which to me makes the space seem larger. This space is amazingly beautiful to me. I hate to see spaces with empty walls. etc. – to ME, they seem uninspiring. To each his/her own. ETA – love the columns on the back of the front door!

  • Love the space, I would definitely say her taste is on the eccentric side, but that is the best part of her that I adore. Being an artist myself, I’m used to playing with “texture on texture” and using colour in many ways. I believe her apartment is an artistic expression, bending all the rules, creating a beautiful mosaic.

  • is SOO inspiring! ive suffered rental living for 35 years. always wished to know how to decorate my apt to be more cool. it would be a great business, trouble is most renters cant afford better but i think once they see how much better it makes it they’d find the money! this would be a great tv show too.but hey i disconnected tv months ago and am now a youtube only buff. subscribed to your website. thank you!

  • I lived in a very small self contained cubicle once. Since I wasn’t allowed to remodel or paint over original features, I hung up colorful sarong as curtain partitions and as backdrop against boring white walls by strategically placed hooks into the woodwork making as minimal number of holes as possible. Its cheap, versatile and washable.

  • I think this is amazing, there is a lot of furniture in the apartment, but you really have a good taste, and i like orange and yellow touches very much. this is extremely well done! Also all those big things around made the space look bigger, as well as the paint on the wall made it bigger. you are brave to use such dark colors on the wall. I think I like best your corridor, and the huge airy picture on the wall which makes the corridor look more spacey. I will use something like that in my corridor. great stuff! and floor lamp decal!! i need to find that!

  • If somebody told me that there’s a small apartment with so much stuff in it and so many different colors I wouldn’t like it, but seeing it with my own eyes makes a huge difference. I think is looks awesome and cozy! She has a very complex and interesting tastes that not a lot of people would understand!

  • I would love to know where she got those rubber things with the ball on one end when you first view the apartment. I use to have them to hold my bed sheets and they came from Wallmart. They don’t carry them anymore and I have never found them anywhere. They were the best but after quite some time the ball ends would tear off.

  • This article came out years ago, but it’s just what I needed! I am moving into a new apartment soon and while it’s a nicer apartment than the one I’m in now, it’s a bit small. It’s very similar in size to your apartment here in this article, especially the bedroom size. Thank you for posting this article, it’s giving me great ideas!

  • WONDERFUL DESIGN! Thank you for sharing that being “neat and tidy” doesn’t come naturally to you. That speaks to me. Living in a small apartment in the city, I’m working on keeping clutter to a minimum. This, coming from a mind that gravitates towards collections and execess! I’m buying your book as I type.

  • OMG your entry way…superb. I get so much “junk mail” and am so busy, that I only check my box once a week. Then I go through it like the “wicked witch from OZ–the mean looking one” as I can’t stand the junk mail that I will need to recycle. Needless to say, I have a pile a mile of mail on my kitchen sink corner so that no one can see it right away when they come in. Still, the pile bugs me. I do not do coupon clipping from the ads that are in my mail and all of the adverts from local biz’s, that honestly get tossed. Your entry way solves that. I already commented, but as I watch this ove & over, I have to say, that I get more and more enthusiastic for designing steals that I luv. In addition, people who are remaining anonymous—relatives trying to win the Publishers Clearing House are sending me magazine subscrips that I did not ask for. Nice, but I would need a vacay to read them all as I already subscribe to mags that I want. Funny, yes. Clutter….errrrr, not so funny. But it is the thought that counts…yes, I can and will recycle the mags.

  • Wow and wow again. LUV it! Well done Janet Lee. Your style is so chic, artistic and enviting all at the same time. I agree with others in that it is not the typical safe boring white color….it has the look of elegance. You should win award for this if there were a competition. Amazing and thank you for sharing…..also, the enviting part, sometimes peeps can buy really expensive high-end things and paint, etc., and still when you walk in, it feels like a stuffy uninviting place, but Your place is so inviting…for yourself, for friends and also for those times when you need to recoup from the flu or a liquid lunch…delovely. What a great use of space as well.

  • I have just finished cleaning my room, I am grasping for air and I really have what you call a minimalistic room. I can only imagine how long it takes to clean up all this no matter how pretty it looks. I love the ideas, will use some probably, but the entire picture is too much for me. Visually adorable, well done.

  • I like the discussions posted here –surprisingly. However, the reason I like her design is because it gets us thinking about what she could have done differently with the same ideas. Her design problem is that she doesn’t integrate as much function (though shoe on the wall idea sort of did that) with aesthetic. That many caviar tins would work if functional. For ex., put tins in the kitchen, with spices inside, on a magnetic shelf along the green back-splash. Write spice names underneath.Or?

  • Over all, one of the most appealing small spaces I have seen. LOVE the bedroom wall over the bed! Since the “Cavier Wall” does not serve a utilitarian purpose, I would rather see it mirrored in some way, maybe 3 tall mirrors side by side? Or a large mirror anchored at the ceiling with almost invisible wire, or even a decorative rope/chain, or on a stand like a giant plate rack? I understand the china storage being open to add depth and visual interest, but I’d have covered the LR side.

  • I watched the article like more than three times and now I no longer wish to have a big messy house when I can get a room as small as this and make it beautiful enough to not feel like the leaving your home. Beautiful, creative and adorable! I would love to go for this kind of small home and leave the idea of buying a bigger one. ♥

  • Right. This is all good DIY. As an architect and interior designer, I do wonder what prevents someone with a decent budget like this from hiring a professional? Architects are not as expensive as many people think. An emerging practice with a good amount of experience in the industry can give you great value for money and help you find ways to save!
