The Subaru Outback offers the most cargo space among Subaru models, making it perfect for hauling gear and equipment. In 2021, the Hyundai Tucson was ranked first with 39 cubic feet of usable cargo space, followed by the 2021 Subaru Forester with 36.5 cubic feet. The 2025 Subaru Outback has a spacious, sturdy, and utilitarian interior with lots of passenger space and cargo room. However, the cabin is a bit drab-looking.
According to Consumer Reports, both the Subaru Ascent and Outback score high for interior comfort, roominess, and cargo space. The 2021 Subaru Ascent is ranked the best in the non-luxury 2-Row Midsize SUV category, while the 2022 Subaru Outback is ranked the best in the non-luxury 2-Row Midsize SUV category. The Subaru Ascent is the ultimate family SUV, with a spacious interior, seating for 8, unmatched safety, and 75.6 cubic feet of cargo room.
The Crosstrek is Subaru’s smallest SUV, but it offers more interior passenger space than the Soterra and still delivers a strong cargo space measurement for its size. The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has a well-built, if slightly bland, interior with comfortable seats and plenty of passenger and cargo space. The infotainment system can be frustrating.
The Subaru Outback and the Subaru Ascent are neck and neck regarding cargo space, with the Outback coming out on top with 75.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The Outback has grown into a formidable wagon with a cavernous interior and plenty of cargo space. The Subaru Forester offers more space with the seats folded down, but the Subaru Outback offers the most cargo space with all the seats in place. If you’re looking for the most cargo space in your next Subaru, the Outback and the Ascent take the top spots.

📹 BEST SUBARU SUV?? — 2024 Subaru Outback vs. Subaru Forester: Comparison
Today, we’re comparing the 2024 Subaru Outback Limited vs. 2023 Subaru Forester Touring! These two siblings are remarkably …
Alex, you outdid yourself on this presentation. Excellent job on explaining the differences between the four models. I look forward to your content. I purchased a 2023 Subaru Outback Touring XT and love it. I learned most of the features on your website. In fact, I showed some of them to my sales associate.
Thanks Matt Luv the reviews. I own the 2024 crosstrek 2.0X Real happy with it, I dont need much boot space and the 150 horsepower aint that bad, it does the speed limits just fine and is comfy on the freeway. Just wanted to throw you a big thanks as your review helped me decide on buying the car. I know you have a wide range of cars to give us your informed input and i appreciate that. I went from a 2012 hyundai ix35 so to me this car is a massive upgrade and I am a very happy subaru crosstrek 2.0X owner. Thanks Matt Keep up the good work
Nice comparison. The difference between the towing capacities with the smaller models was probably due to the vehicles having the same total cargo capacity but one vehicle weighed more than the other. What follows isn’t so much about Subaru as about considerations about trailers, that will help you select what model to get. Having a trailer gives you a major boost in cargo capacity, don’t skimp but don’t over buy. Spend time learning how to back the thing up. Towing is a bit complicated and while capacity of “X” pounds is convenient it is misleading since it doesn’t deal with enough details. Vehicles, transmissions, tires, hitches and axles are all rated on how much load they can carry. In the case of a tow vehicle that includes the weight of the vehicle, its passengers, cargo and whatever is on the tongue. Some trim levels have a transmission cooler which ups the towing capacity. Having brakes on the trailer can also improve capacity. For instance the Ascent with Touring and above trim has a transmission cooler and is rated at 5,000 lbs. if the trailer has brakes. If it doesn’t then the capacity is much less. The basic idea is that each thing, tow vehicle, trailer, whatever, has a capacity that shouldn’t be exceeded. The tow vehicle has a maximum cargo capacity, the hitch has a maximum load capacity as does the trailer. If everything is balanced out you maximize your capacity with out overloading anything. Here’s an example, all weights are American. Vehicle Calculation 1. Vehicle cargo capacity is 1000; 2.
I have a new 2023 Outback Limited XT and on a recent 1,100 mile trip we achieved an indicated 29 MPG across Arkansas and Texas where the speed limit was 75 MPH. I’m pleased with that mileage. I’ll also report that the wireless Apple CarPlay worked flawlessly. My only complaint, it the lack of front parking sensors. Thanks for the thorough review Alex!
I love my 2018 Crosstrek 6MT. Such a fun, zippy car to drive, and I love the compact nature of it. The 6 speed has a great feel. It is however smaller than I need for some uses so I’ve been looking at the Forester Wilderness. Can you please do some trim level comparisons? Also any idea when the ‘24 Forester Wilderness will be available?
You know it’s too bad that sedans are indeed falling out of love. I’m curious how some of the more recent conversations go with sedan customers who are concerned about the “updated” side impact crash test ratings on IIHS. I’ll take an Outback XT with the extra tech features in the Ascent, revert to the physical hvac controls and I’m sold. Bonus option is to have the eyesight cams as 24/7 surveillance with recorded footage able to be retrieved locally over usb.
Just got a 23’ Outback Wilderness and love it. Traded in my 20’ forester touring for my outback. I feel snug in the seats of my outback. I feel I sit higher in the my outback wilderness. First time owning a turbo engine. My question is I thought the Subaru Ascent only got a refresh I didn’t know it was a redesign?
@alexpmo Can we add front camera or 360 view to a forester premium or sport model? I test drove the wilderness model with the front camera feature. I liked this but do not need many of the wilderness features. We also take long highway trips and the wilderness model MPG is a downside. Also, can we get a limited or touring version with cloth seats (or vegan “leather”? (if yes, can it also add front or 360 camera) – I do not want leather seats. It is frustrating most/(all?) higher trim level vehicles only offer leather interior. Is the interior for any seats – vegan “leather”? I was told they “are pretty sure” it is for the wilderness.
I’m waiting for Subaru to adopt the 24 meter iMax screen for the dash, so I can REALLY take my eyes off the road while I’m navigating through heavy traffic. Replacing most of the tactile controls with touchscreens also helps distract drivers. Technology and road safety are growing increasingly mutually exclusive.
Hey Alex! I’ve been subscribed for about a year now. I appreciate your articles, and last year bought a 2023 Outback Premium with the upgraded package. Now we are looking for a car for my husband (we live in Denver, Colorado) and we just custom ordered a 2024 Crosstrek Limited in Sun blaze Orange! I also just accepted a job at our local Subaru dealership… after perusal you for so long I’m excited to get into this business. It seems like this has been a great career for you!!
Hello Alex, I have a 2022 Subaru crosstrek Limited, i love it with 3 exceptions. 1. StartsStop shaking, highway wind noise and hard seat for driver. However i love this car because of my dealerships customer service, fuel economy and practical and symmetrical 4WD. Do you have any recommendations which one will have my issues addressed. Thank you
I am interested in the Forester. My wife has a 2023 Premium which she enjoys. Two questions. 1- Can Forester Premium be ordered without a sun roof? I do not believe it can but wanted to ask. 2- Will the 2024 Forester be a continuation of the 2023 model? Read a view articles this may be the case. Thanks.
Might want to change where you said you have to get a wilderness edition to tow more. 2023 Subaru Forester Towing capacity 1,500 to 3,000 lbs Subaru Forester models from 2014 to 2023 offer the same base towing capacity of 1,500 pounds when properly equipped. However, the 2022 redesign of this iconic SUV offered an optional Class II tow hitch receiver, which increases your towing capacity from 1,500 pounds to 3,000 pounds when properly equipped.
A possible problem with the Forester.. I am taller (over 6 ft) and need (and like) a roomy, airy cabin, with good outward visibility (super important for safety!!).. The Subaru Foresters boxy shape, taller design, and bigger windows (for great visibility) seemed to be just what I was looking for. After further research, it looks like there is a MAJOR problem with the Forester’s and the location of the safety monitoring devices – which are (unwisely) located at the top middle part of the windshield… These safety monitoring devices are now causing an UNSAFE large blind spot for taller drivers, who now have their outward vision blocked by these safety monitoring devices. Subaru needs to find another place to put these safety monitoring devices. Also notice the cabin lights/sunglasses holder also is placed in that area, limiting visibility even further. Plus I need the top part of the windshield for not only better/safer visibility, but to look out to see road signs, street signs, addresses, highway signs, see land marks, and just general outward visibility for driving enjoyment. I am surprised such a forward thinking company like Subaru could make such a major mistake that hurts safe driving.
Why so ao many Subarus die after 100,000 miles these days? They all need a head gasket or the timing belt goes. Then it’s an issue in the center of the engine and too expensive to fix even if you can find someone to do it. My mom’s Outback blew a head gadget 134,000 MI and my sons Forester time belt went and the engine is shot at 136,000 miles. Subaru used to last over 200,000 miles. I have a Forester with 91,348 miles. I’m holding my breath. These were our first Subarus.
My wife’s chevy Camaro was totaled three weeks ago so we needed a car quickly. Not much on the used car market but extremely overpriced vehicles. Had been think about getting a outback xt for myself, so I had my wife test drive a crosstrek. She loved it. None available in black on the lot and 2.5 engine was probably three or four months away. They had a black premium on order already. No power or heated seats😪. They said it should be here in early September, we put a deposit down on it. Keeping our fingers crossed that it arrives sooner than later.
Until Subaru fixes the problem with the head unit (radio, cell phone interface, touch screen) that is plaguing the Outbacks, Ascents and Legacy’s, I wouldn’t recommend them. I had to get rid of mine the problem is so bad. The Forester and Crostrek have a different head unit and seem to be working as advertised.
WE just traded up to the 2023 Ascent Limited 8 Passenger in anticipation of our third grandchild. The seating is tight with two car seats in the third row, but we are very happy with the vehicle. This is our 6th Subaru, started driving the Outbacks in 1998 and traded in our 2019 OUtback for the Ascent. You won’t be disappointed with the vehicles.
Great review! I wanted to review this before I went vehicle shopping. I’ve had jeep grand Cherokee‘s for quite some time and looking for something different. Leaning towards the outback and the Forrester I’m in my car a lot for work if I go with the outback I would be more inclined to go with the turbo. Thanks again!
I need a vehicle with good ground clearance. I’ve got certain physical challenges and a new car is warranted to accommodate my physical issues. Some Subaru vehicles made multiple lists that I have found. I pretty much have narrowed my selection down to Subaru and Hyundai due to customes with my condition reporting what they drive. What I need is to test drive and hopefully I can make a more informed decision. I also found out that Subarus have better resale value than Hyundai. The thing is I’ve never sat in a Subaru much less driven one. I have driven my brother’s Santa Fe and I got in and out of that car without any pain. That was bloody fantastic! So it’s definitely a contender. I just need the Subaru to do the same thing and maybe then I’ll go that route because I like the practicality of the Subaru Forester and it’s not flashy. I like that about it. It doesn’t have to be flashy to look good and be a good car. That is a big draw for me.
Bought a Forester, first new car, it’s leaked oil from the timing belt cover since day one. Both the dealer and Subaru have refused to help. Dealer claimed it was normal oil burn, Subaru Customer Service was super rude and claimed I just made it up! The oil leak had caused excessive engine wear so it’s not a good investment. I have to carry synthetic oil with me everywhere plus add it at almost every usage. Extra bother and expense, plus bad customer service equals buyers remorse.
I was ready to buy a small travel trailer. I have a 2022 Ascent Onyx. My invoice says under PERFORMANCE AND EXTERIOR “5000 Towing Capacity with Trailer Stability Assist” This is a lie. MY Ascent has ZERO towing capability. There is no hitch. I was shocked to discover this at the RV dealership. I’m pretty clear you as a conscientious sales person would have told me that what I was buying wasn’t going to tow anything! I did not build my Ascent. I purchased it from a dealership who did not charge $1000 over MSRP. What I did not know was that I was deceived by the towing capacity as stated on the invoice plus the stability assist there as well. Now I can’t buy a trailer! Unless, I guess, I buy a different car or better yet a truck. I emailed my sales person and didn’t get a response. I figured I would write here because you have responded to me before. What can I do?
Friends have an XV & Crosstrek in Australia 🇦🇺 I helped with buying. Washing & detailing on occasion I find the scuff trims around wheels 🛞 easily scuff in daily use and impossible to detail / polish / clean. Brilliant otherwise very comfortable great handling etc. But Subaru need to do better scuff trim materials.
we bought a new 2020 OB Onyx turbo…our vacation car. Great driving car, but info system is atrocious. And the sound system is on the cheap…and this a 43K list price car! Our 4th gen Prius’ 3 is where suby should have been, as far as well-thought-out details should be. Thanks. PS: the OB has 4 inches more wheel base than the Forester…clinched it for us, apparently a smoother ride. The hitch gives if 3500 lbs towing ability.
Hello Alex, I’ve been systematically perusal your articles as we are purchasing a 2024 Crosstrek Onyx. This will be our 3rd Subaru vehicle since 1999. And while perusal this particular article I’ve got to say that my excitement for our new vehicle has dropped a smidge as we live in Canada and it gets rather cold up here during the winter months and the power lift gate on our 2015 Forester has been a godsend even if it’s not cold out. Would it be possible for you to do a quick article on opening the lift gate on a 2024 Crosstrek. I can’t seem to find any information on this. Thank you so much for your articles.
Hi Alex, Very comprehensive article comparison. I gave a 2012 Outback. Just turned over 250,000 miles. It is starting to feel its age and I’m shopping. With the economy being what it is, I’m having to go older model to afford. I have a 3.6R although I don’t tow. I like the added power. Do you have any articles for comparison shopping used outback’s? I want to know if the 2018 3.6R I am looking at is the better year than another and why. There are a lot of 2019’s in my area which makes me wonder if people want to get rid of this year. Thanks
Hi. Been looking to buy a new car and finally decided on a 2024 Subaru Legacy. It had everything I had been lookint for and was so hapoy my search was over, until I started seeing oil problems with Subarus. Needless to say I was so upset. But upon perusal several articles about the oil consumption, I’m still not sure if rhe problem is only with the Subaru SUV’s or are their cars included in there too. They were naming different engines affected but not so much the year and model vehicles that were affected, or is that bc all Subaru vehicles have oil problem?
It all comes down to what you’ll be wanting and expecting from the vehicle. How many people will you be loading up on a regular basis? Are you a couple that backpacks, or a fam of 4 that car camps? Do you like peppy-and-nimble or refined-and-powerful? Do you just need a soccer-mom-mobile with some bad weather capability, or do you need a touring car that can go where some 4×4’s have trouble? Do you need a 3rd row and captain’s chairs? Do you demand your car can pass without a hiccup while loaded with 4 people, a dog and car camping gear? Buy the model you need for your lifestyle. Once you define what your lifestyle is, picking the right model Subaru becomes easy. And it’s exactly why, brands carry multiple models, as well as variants of each model. Because we all have out specific needs in a car, and no one model can check ALL the boxes.
On my second Forester (2016 and 2021). Looked hard at the Outback but getting in and out its much lower, more sedan based. I am the exception as I don’t want anything in my car so I always buy the base model which never gets looked at or reviewed. Trust me its great having way less to break! Friends with fully loaded cars spend way more than I do to buy them and maintain them.
If you’re in Australia forget going to Canberra Phillip Subaru it’s full of non qualified trades apprentices not people you would want working on a family’s car there’s parts service idiots then sales worthless staff with a dealership manager who couldn’t build an emotion with his non trusty people !
I have had a fully fitted Crosstrek it’s great but not much difference between Forester & Crosstrek in height. Been waiting forever on bigger screen for Ascent which is 2024 not much difference, realized Ascent does not have much HP and power I’m switching to a Ford explorer most likely. Sorry Subaru too weak of an engine.
I bought a 2024 outback wilderness in april and just saw a different article about the crosrails built into to the roof rack and thought that was the coolest thing so i had to gocheck it out but was kinda disappointed to find mine are not that way but the rack it does have seems more stout than what i saw in the article
My dealer wasn’t sure so I’m coming to you because you know everything. I ordered my OBW and it has the Auto-Dimming Mirror with Compass and HomeLink® included, but I realized it doesn’t have the Auto-Dimming Exterior Mirror with Approach Light. Can this be added after the fact and do you know how much more it might be getting installed after delivery to the dealer rather than before?
-Question for you Alex. I purchased a Subaru Outback 2.4T Onyx Edition XT, 2020 with 5,800 miles on in a few months ago. I love the car, but I am confused by the remaining fuel display. When I fill the tank it usually shows about 350-380 miles remaining. After driving a bit on the new tank, the miles to fill jump up to about 450, then within about 50 miles of driving the remaining fuel shows as about 340 miles left before the tank is empty. This makes no sense to me. What is going on and what can you suggest to fix this? Thanks. – Tom
Hello friend, my wife and I leased a band new 2020 Subaru, an Impreza, back in Colorado, but we have been living in Tennessee for the past two years and she has only a few months left to give the car back to a Subaru dealer here in Tennessee and lease another one. Finding honest car sales men with morals and integrity is like pulling teeth. Can you help us?
We have been Toyota car people since 1977, including a Toyota 1/2 ton pickup during that time. We have been Ford picup buyers, with a 1999 F250 Super Duty (bought in August 1998)10 cylinder now with 188,000 trouble-free miles on it, towing our 8500lb travel trailer. We have had a 1977 Corona, Corrollas, 1984 Camry Limited (loved that car, gave it to my daughter who gave it to her dauther with 350,000 miles on it still running like new!) Then we graduated to Avalons, two late 1990 models, then a 2005 Avalon wiht all the bells & whistles that is still my favorite drive. But, in February we moved back to Washington with snow in our area. We ordered and took delivery on our new 2023 Forrester Wilderness. With all the goodies, more than I have figured out just yet, delivered and out of the parking lot for about $42,900. This is a lovely car, fun to drive, but most important, my wife can drive it with configence. At our stage of life it is not likely we will be buying any more cars, but I feel really happy that we have had the affordable and trouble free Toyotas, and now a Subaru.
Very interesting — it looks like nothing has really changed between my 2019 Forrester Touring and the current Forrester models. On my Forrester, the tongue weight that can be put on a hitch has a maximum of 150 pounds and the towing capacity, as you say, is restricted to 1,500 pounds. I don’t expect to be towing anything, but I do carry my bicycle around on a hitch-mounted bicycle carrier. For my needs the tongue weight limit is adequate, Maybe a little limiting by now since at least one vendor offers hitch mounted cargo carriers that have good capacities, but which would exceed the tongue weight limit rather quickly if someone tried loading a heavy item. For example a bag of cement plus the weight of the cargo carrier plus the weight of the hitch would immediately exceed the tongue load limit. Change comes slowly to Subaru vehicles, but it does happen. 🙂
We have a 2016 Forester 2.5i Premium. The only redeeming quality of the Forester is the large front window, the good cargo space, comfortable seats, and the eyeSight warning system. Subaru cheapen out on a lot of features. Poor quality reverse camera, especially at night, dimly lit cargo light, setting controls on the touchscreen exceeding non-intuitive, boxer engine harder to service (especially spark plugs), noisy ride, expensive parts, small glove compartment, and a number of frustrating recalls. The Toyota Rav4 is a better made car, especially the Hybrid.
Is it normal for Subaru dealer salesmen to not negotiate prices? I went to a Subaru dealer today to try to get a slightly lower price, but the salesman didn’t budge on the sticker price. I was prepared to buy, but his sticker price combined with the taxes, tags, and fees were out of my budget. He was unable to make a deal so I had to walk away. I’m just wondering if all Subaru dealers are like this or if it is unusual? Love the content on this website! I’ve learned so much about Subarus from perusal your articles, keep it up!
I like subarus, but the best ones dont have CVTs. Now that they are killing the manual crosstrek, I probably wont be getting one. Maybe the EVs will be ok, but essentially they have the same problem as a CVT. When they hit a certain age, they will need a cost prohibitive service or replacement that will make them worthless. The appeal of subaru has always been that they can last forever. This has been sabotaged in the engineering department.
