How To Use Lighting In The Design Of Gifs?

The author specializes in lighting, specifically 3D animated scenes, and has developed a strong foundation in the art of CG lighting. This process involves simulating light in a 3D environment using various techniques, such as base lighting, key light, fill light, and additional accent lights. GIFs can be implemented using various techniques, such as gradient overlays, which create a new layer in the image. The basic idea is to first render a surface using ambient light or vertex lighting, then loop over all the elements.

To create a compelling GIF, it is essential to master timing, striking visuals, and a clear message. Timing is key, and the loop of a GIF should feel natural. Traditional filmmaking provides stylistic freedom with the use of lights, but it is crucial to recognize the need for a background layer across all frames.

Animated GIFs can be used to improve project presentations by focusing on context, design concept, spatial relationship between levels, and file size. The file should be static or animated, and there is a file size cap. To create animated GIFs in photoshop, follow these guidelines:

  1. Start with a key light for main illumination.
  2. Add fill lights to soften shadows.
  3. Use utility lights to enhance specific details.

In summary, mastering the art of CG lighting involves establishing base lighting, key light, fill light, and accent lights to create visually appealing and engaging GIFs.

  • That’s so funny that I came across your article this afternoon. I use mostly Indesign and Photoshop and I was hesitating to start using Canva as an extra tool. I was scared it would make me look unprofessional. But you are actually pretty right. Thank you for this article. And I didn’t know about Ezgif. Just added it to my bookmark. Thank you!

  • Really wish after effects could directly export .gifs with alpha. Whenever I want to export a gif with the alpha website intact I’m pretty much forced to export as mov through QuickTine, then bounce that move into Photoshop to export as .gif. At least that’s what I’ve heard and thus do. Maybe I’m using an outdated method or found some incorrect information.

  • Thank you for making this article – I watched so many until I found this and it was the most helpful! I used EZ Gif Maker and when I saved it to my computer, it no longer plays as a gif. It is just in two Preview slides. Can you recommend what to do or does anyone else have suggestions? A million thanks for the learning 🙂

  • Steve Wilhite created the Graphics Interchange Format, or GIF while working for Compuserve in 1987. When he received a Webby Award in 2013 for it and delivered his five-word acceptance speech (that’s all the Webbys allow), he flashed a GIF on the big screens at the Cipriani Wall Street in New York. And, in a flash, it all became clear: “It’s pronounced JIF, not GIF.” (soft G not a hard G)

  • I worry about finding one of my photos gets used by them in some way I don’t like, so I never use free stuff, but I pay for photoshop and acdsee products, so I can expect privacy. I make all kinds of stuff for myself, and don’t post it except possibly for family or friends. Thanks as always and please make more. Th

  • The whole GIF pronunciation kerfuffle is easy to solve: what do you give your mother on her birthday? A gift or a jar of peanut butter? Only the people that give their mother a gift are good offspring. Don’t you want to be a good child to your mother? If you don’t then go ahead and give her some peanut butter even though you know she’s allergic.

  • Me personally, I like to do 3D animations and I use Blender for it. My logo is 2D, I made a 3D object of the logo letter from the image and animated all using Blender and other objects in Blender. Whatever works best for you is your tool. I prefer to use photoshop for art creation and export things to Blender after to make it pretty and interesting.

  • I’m hoping you can answer aquestion for me. I have PS CS6 and a 43″ monitor. When I open PS it does not expand properly – all type and tools are really tiny. I use the mag to operate the software but it is very clumsy and slows me down really bad. I want to upgrade to PS 2020 and would like to know if it will read properly on my monitor before I do. Any help would be appreciated.
