Does Engineering Include Interior Design?

Interior design is a crucial aspect of engineering, but it is not the only aspect to consider when creating a space. Interior designers work closely with architects, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and construction laborers to design and oversee construction. Interior design engineering merges design and engineering to create functional, beautiful, and aesthetically pleasing indoor spaces. These experts plan layouts, lighting, and ventilation, considering structural problem-solving and creative design for both exterior and interior building design.

Architects are responsible for the design and construction of buildings and other physical structures, while interior designers focus on the design and decoration of the interiors of buildings. Interior designers manage small teams of contractors and work closely with architects, engineers, and tradespeople. They typically oversee all construction and provide services to embellish and enhance the quality, conditions, and programming of spatial and decorative elements.

To become a successful interior designer, one needs a well-rounded education and the ability to apply engineering concepts to their work. Interior design is not typically considered a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) career, but it is essential for creating functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environments. Civil engineers possess technical skills and abilities that align perfectly with the requirements of interior design.

Interior design is not just about how a building looks, but also involves the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment. Spaceterior trains Civil engineering students to become Interior Designers and scale up in their careers.

Interior designers focus on human wants and needs, functionality of the space, and aesthetics.

Architects focus on technical aspects like building form, direction, materials, and more, while interior designers focus on human wants and needs, functionality, and aesthetics. • Hi Dami! I’m a registered and licensed architect in the Philippines and most of my work has been with interior renovations so you are absolutely right with projects like these having the quickest ROI, hence me having my own small contracting business. There’s actually a lot of competition here and I’ve always been so self conscious of things we haven’t achieved yet, but I’d love to exchange experiences and thoughts on starting your own firm. I’m planning on saving up and studying again in another country in hopes of coming back to improve our not-so-obvious architectural character. Haha! As always, I love your articles and thanks so much for what you do! Cheers!

  • a lot of difference you are mentioning is really just the size of the practice, ie. in an architecture firm in a office of 4-5, and working on smaller scale project (single family, low rise..) The projects are turning around faster, and one can work on several projects at once, and sure, grabbing beers with folks hehehehe.
