I’ve long been of the opinion that the Disneyland hotels are just too expensive when you can stay across the street off property for $150-$200/night. But having recently stayed there for the first time in 10 years (also the Fantasy Tower), I get why people book the Disneyland Hotel. The feeling of being constantly immersed in Disney Magic and having the music in the common areas makes me happy. That’s something you don’t get if you stay off property. And of course, my favorite benefit: having Trader Sam’s/Tangaroa Terrace right downstairs from you room is soooo convenient. I’ll definitely be splurging for hotel rooms a little more frequently than I have previously.

If I were getting on a plane and going across county, I think I’d splurge and stay at one of the Disney hotels. That would probably be a once only trip for me. WDW is only a 7 hour drive away for me so I go there often and do stay on site but no longer feel the need to stay in the deluxe hotels, I have stayed in them in the past. Would love to see more content for DL.
Also, I think Disneyland Hotel is furthest Disneyland Hotel walk but it’s nice to have that quick access to the Monorail cause that can get you in and out quick! I will say though, there are a lot of low budget hotels that are a closer walk to the front gates and a quick MickeyD’s breakfast away as well. Haha
AoA was awesome for us. Family of 4, kids 8 and 6 for our first WDW trip. Why? Because the theming got us in the bubble immediately. And the sky liner to help minimize the transportation stress. And we staying in the standard room because we were more interested in parks than pools and we still felt we had enough space.
I’m almost to the point where I’d consider the Art of Animation Resort to be creeping in to Moderate territory. The family rooms are in the Moderate price range, and for single rooms I’d recommend Pop Century; the Little Mermaid section at AoA is farthest from the buses and the skyliner. Do really like the new rooms: small, but nice use of space. For two people it’s just fine. A family of 4-5 can get a little cramped.
My adult son (he is 41) & I (I am 68) recently went on a Mom/Son trip & we were booked @ All Star Sports & 2 weeks before leaving got upgraded to a Cars Themed Family Suite @ AoA!!! Wow…what a game changer – 2 full bathrooms, separate bedroom (which my son insisted I take), separate living room area – AND access to the skyliner!! We had a fantastic time!! He goes to Disney World every year & I had not been in 25 years. He made sure his Mom had a good time!!
I had an awful time with small wonders travel agency! She tried offering the base pay with no savings as though she’d done some research. I had done research, so I knew those prices she threw my way. Then, a little time later, I found deals and she never mentioned them. I eventually said I didn’t want her services. She cut me off, no apology. No standardized thank you, just ghosted me completely. Loved my stay at ALL STAR music, but our room was so far from the restaurant and front desk that after a long day with painful feet, it was horrible walking there lol but otherwise, i enjoyed the room. Comfy beds, food was good, they even made gluten free pizza for my mom on request. The staff was super friendly! I found the buses weren’t that bad honestly. I never waited more than 20mins for one. The hardest is when you have 5+ strollers in front of you and electric chairs… they fill out the bus quickly and you end up waiting for another bus.
I love the value resorts as I do a lot of solo trips, so the rooms are perfect for me. I like The All Stars for when I plan to go to the parks and will do AOA or Pop when I want to do a little resort hopping or plan on hitting mostly Epcot/HS and not MK and AK. I’ve stayed at all of them multiple times. I particularly like AS Music. It’s right in the middle of the three AS resorts and it makes walking between the other two, as well as using the bus much easier. If you want a quick walk to the food court and buses get preferred in Calypso, but if you want super quiet get the back of Broadway or Country. It’s a further walk but the landscaping is really nice and it’s much quieter than the front of the resort.
I prefer Sports over Pop now that the all stars don’t share busses. I have never had to share an all star bus in the past 7 years. The skyliner is fun, and great for hopping BUT it’s a pain in the morning and park close and that you have to transfer at CBR is another pain. God forbid they shut it down it takes FOREVER for them to start running busses to Pop/AoA
