The Earth’s internal structure comprises four major components: the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. The crust is composed of a silicate solid crust, a highly viscous asthenosphere, and solid mantle, with a liquid outer core that generates the Earth’s magnetic field. The outer core is a liquid layer.
The Earth’s internal structure is divided into lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, and inner core. Each layer has unique chemical composition, physical state, and can impact the Earth’s functioning and evolution. The crust makes up less than 1% of Earth by mass, consisting of oceanic crust and continental crust.
The mantle, the mostly solid bulk of Earth’s interior, lies between its dense, superheated core and its thin outer layer, the crust. It can be divided mechanically into lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesospheric mantle, outer core, and inner core. The outer layer is divided into tectonic or lithospheric plates, which float on a mobile layer beneath called the asthenosphere.
The Earth’s layers can be assigned according to chemical composition or mechanical properties, such as rock strength and hardness. The three main layers of Earth are the crust (1 percent of Earth’s volume), the mantle (84%), and the core (15%).
The outer core is fluid, while the inner core is likely solid. There may also be transition zones between these layers. The thickness of the crust and lithosphere, as well as the boundary between the upper and lower mesosphere (upper and lower mantle), determine the Earth’s internal structure. As depth increases, the Earth’s interior experiences gradual increases in temperature, pressure, and density.
