Installing a smooth metal dryer vent can speed up clothes drying and prevent lint build-up. Rigid metal vents are safer than flexible plastic vents, and they require access to an exterior wall for optimal performance. To install a dryer vent, follow these steps:
- Measure and cut the vent accurately.
- Plan the shortest route from your dryer to the outside wall.
- Determine the path of the ventilation duct.
- Attach the new vent pipe to the existing wall duct using a hose clamp.
- Seal the connection with metal foil tape for an airtight fit.
- Check that the exterior vent cover is clean and functioning.
There are two vents through the outside wall: 3-inch bathroom ventilation fan duct and 4-inch dryer duct. For houses on hillsides, use 4″ hard pipe with the longest continuous runs as possible. If your dryer is in the basement and the basement is underground, run duct up the exterior wall and out the rim joist.
To hook up a dryer vent, clean the venting system, measure from outlet to outlet, choose your venting, and trim the vent. To install a wall vent cap, slide the duct side into the hole and fasten it with screws or exterior grade screws. Mount the vent cap on outside siding and cut the hole through the wall with a 4″ hole saw.
Wrapping the vent pipe with insulation is recommended to keep the air warm until it exits the house and reduce the chance of water build-up.
