2 things I would like to point out: 1. The blind spot monitoring camera can be turned off from a button on the indicator stalk, personal experience suggests it is easy and never confused me while driving through a round-about. 2. The reverse gear selector (in my opinion) is actually quite intuitive, I immediately got used to the button for forward and pull back for reverse.
I’ve always liked Hondas, owned a few and worked for them for a few years. But the pricing is mental, £54k for this, £50k for the Type R (I remember when it was £17k), even the Jazz is so expensive now. I understand inflation and everything has become so much more expensive, but I feel like they are pricing themselves out of the market, as for those prices people can afford a car with a higher status brand (my last two Audi’s have been cheaper than those prices).
Honda knows their cars don’t break, which means they don’t sell as many. You’re paying for reliability. With other brands the maintenance and trade in and replacement costs quickly catches up with you. But you buy a Honda once, and if you don’t mind driving the same car for 20+ years, it will be the last car you own until your kids inherit it when they go to uni
I’d understand the pricing a bit more if Honda wanted to try to become more of an “upmarket” brand, but they skimp out on loads of things which are fairly standard in Economy cars, (I.e using Halogens STILL regardless of trim, limited drivetrain options, poor-average sound insulation, average sound system integration, average material choice, etc.) There are many things that they can do to better justify the price a bit more. For £45K-54K it is a massive ask.
The sound of the brake pedal is due to electric servo motor under the hood. There’s effectively no mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the brakes, hence why they were able to nail the whole blended braking system. Also, this means there’s no ABS pulsations or freakout when under hard braking.
The new CR-V really looks nice in terms of interior and exterior design.The previous generation Honda CR-V really didn’t sit well with Mr Watson so I’m quite surprised with how much he likes this new one😂. I’m in the US currently looking at possibly purchasing one of these however……..You guys in the UK are lucky with these because the entire lower body trim is color matched with the rest if the car. In the US even the top trim level has crap black plastic around the entire bottom of it. I’m also wondering why the US one is a white pearl and the UK one is a bright alpine white??
When you do a review perhaps you should check the manual a little first. On the stalks on the steering wheel there are camera buttons on the end. One on the left turns the camera on or off so you can easily cancel it so you don’t lose the sat nav screen. On the right at slow speed you get the full 360 degree camera.
Comparing to a Kia Sportage is unfair, the new CRV is both longer & wider. Having driven both there is far more passenger space in the CRV. I was a little shocked at the new price, people comparing it to the equivalent RAV4. But the RAV4 is a 5 year old design, I do like the RAV4 but that needs a new updates model.
Wow that is expensive for a Honda CRV. I’m in Australia & the same car is at least £20,000 cheaper here in Melbourne Australia it costs approximately $64,000 Australian which is £33,000 when converted. Who is paying such a high price for a Honda? Seriously that is Mercedes Benz money here in Aus. Anything over £40,000 is ridiculously expensive.
I’ve had 5 CRV’s and there was a time they absolutely where the best family SUV on the planet – but for a few years now they have lost ground on multiple other marques. The new pricing is ridiculous ! And as you say, when you walk around it, it looks like a miss mash of other cars. Inside Honda have been lacking in tech for a while – the infotainment system is poor for the price range – def won’t be buying another CRV I’m afraid
I had a 2019 Civic with the blind spot camera, I got used to it and actually miss having that feature. It was handy and you could also turn it on/off manually if you wanted too. The reason it doesn’t turn on for the right is because you don’t need it for your right, you can just turn your head ever so slightly and use your peripheral vision to detect anything in your drivers side blind spot. Honda drivers tend to be older too, so it’s harder for them to turn their neck to check the passenger side blind spot. I think Honda understands their customer base, and it is much easier to glance down at the screen than to turn ones head over their left shoulder.
The lane watch camera from Honda is very effective and we don’t need it for the lane on the driver’s side as the side mirror on that side has a lesser blind spot, if any. The lane watch gives a real time, ‘all or none’ information and not like blind spot monitoring on other cars which can malfunction and give false negative information
A friend had the top of the range model (AU$65000) as he thought Hondas were meant to be rock solid. TBH it was pretty gutless and although the engine didn’t have any issues, the ACC and other electronics constantly played up and if it wasn’t for the warranty would’ve been in access of $2k to fix. So he got rid of it again as Honda said that the issues were “normal”. Maybe stay away from the hybrids.

The reason why Honda’s are not sold in that big numbers in some countries is their price policy. In Luxembourg for instance, no one would pay that much money for a Honda, may it be reliable or not, because: Most people here change their cars every 2 or 3 years and they would buy premium brands first. This CRV is at a price point, where I already can predict that this won’t change. My family and I bought a lot of Hondas at the time and they are really very reliable which was important for us because we keep ours cars for at least 7-8 years. My parents are driving a 14 years old CRV at the moment with a 2.2 l Diesel engine and it’s unbreakable. As my dad really looks after his cars, it also looks like a new car from the outside and really ok for its age on the inside. Of course, seat, pedals and steering wheel show some wear after more than 200000 km but the rest is still in good shape. My dad even has the protective blue foil still on the aluminium boot sill.
It’s worth talking about (and including on future articles) why would anyone buy a Honda in the first place. They aren’t simply charging 10k more because they have to (i.e. higher costs) than Korean analogues. Hondas are generally made to last and the total ownership cost may be a lot closer (including fuel, etc.). Hondas generally rate highly on reliability as well…
Honda really is in a tailspin which may end in doom for them. Their sales in Europe, never really strong, has taken a dive since they closed their UK factory and hence all diesel engine production. They have a very limited model range offering and their prices are too high relative to competitors that have come from nowhere fifteen years ago to sell many multiples of sales achieved by Honda today. Thinking of the Korean cousins just as one example. I really don’t think they are selling anything like the volume of CR-V or Civic that they did a decade ago. Certainly around here their dealerships have been forced to take on rival franchises such as Renault and, significantly, MG. They are currently selling five MG for every one Honda. I’m afraid that this CR-V generation will not change their fortune. It just isn’t good enough to justify its price.
I’m often confused, as to whether this car has 148PS? 189PS? or 209PS? (total combined power engine + electric motor)… i mean the price point, you are looking at fierce competitors like Mazda (CX5, CX8), Hyundai, Toyota & etc… if the PS is kinda low, it makes you feel like you are buying something inferior.. hahaha..
So…. I have a top range VW Atlas, six cylinders, three rows, captain chairs in the second row… all the bells and whistles… $55k US. So would I go for a $55+ two row Honda? Not in a million years. I’d first go for a VW Tiguan (plug in hybrid coming, it seems), but thousands less and much more fun to drive.
PHEV? And it actually has under-floor storage??? Whoa! No such option in North America! Very nice! I have the 2023 HEV, and it doesn’t have under-floor storage (no place to store the tonneau cover). If they had had a PHEV here, I would have bought it. Another weird quirk – in North America, the HEV version is 4WD, but uses a traditional transfer case rather than a rear electric motor. Also, ~200bhp. Also, we get a gear shift lever. So I guess it isn’t all bad. One more thing – the Honda app is terrible. If you actually had it installed on your phone you would probably have listed it as a ‘con’ rather than a ‘pro’.
Is this a cvt? Im pretty sure that shift is the 2 speed direct drive that the new crv’s get. It’s quite complicated, the engine AND motor can direct drive the car in 2 speeds, but most of the time the engine is just a generator and the motor direct drives the wheels like a full EV. It’s wildly confusing but I don’t think it’s a true cvt.
In the US the Plug in Hybrid starting price is 33,350, and the highest trim with all the options is a little under 41k… The gas car starts at 29,500 and the highest trim with all the options is under 37k… Why is this so expensive in the UK?? I am so confused, and before any of you say this is before tax and stuff, One of my friends bought the Hybrid with the highest trim and paid a little under $45k with tax and destination fee. I like the looks,but £54k is ridiculous to be honest.Honda and Toyota are known for making cars that can compete with the top brands for an affordable price and I think that’s their major selling point.But selling the Crv for £54k is honestly outrageous and I don’t think anyone will pay such for a CRV.Because in my country that can get you a decent 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE or a BMW X6 which are more superior to this.I hope they review the pricing because it will do them no good.
Honda should have done more when it comes to things like sound insulation and engine options. What is getting anoying is that every time when there’s a comparisson to any other car you have to hear “and if you want to see the article of that car review click on the link….” . I heard it once or maybe twice before per review which was fine, but now it’s a dozen times in every review and it’s annoying IMO.
Ooh so great question! The little things in the back on the wheel well go on the pocket (The side pockets on both sides of the boot on the inside of the car) so that when you raise the like tray thing were you put like grocerys you know you can lower it and raise it well when you raise it the side pockets have space for items to slip into like were the charger/spare wheel would go so those go there to stop that you get them and you clip them on using the clips. And thats weird in the US The starting price is like 20k and ending price is like 38k
What amazes me is how lazy Honda are. Some competitors have a full electric version of their SUV on sale now. Would Honda ever consider being an early adopter… ? nah, play it safe and keep flogging old engines (the petrol engines are hardly changed from 4-5 years ago). For the records I’m on my second CRV (it’s a 2019 petrol) and I can’t fault it… but com’on Honda, grow a pair and break new ground from time to time.

You could call me a Honda fanboy. I’ve had 2 CRVs, an Accord, a Civic, a Jazz, and 3 of their motorbikes. But they really seem to have lost their way. Their engineering is top notch but they have never been good with software. This is why all their infotainment systems since 2010 suck, and we continue to see stupid decisions like the mirror camera activating on left-hand indication, and the all-round camera mode turning off automatically for no reason. As the joy of driving becomes less important due to nannying and traffic everywhere, good software and infotainment becomes critical in people’s choice of car. I probably would choose a Hyundai or Kia for my next SUV.
Firstly, why would the working class and the lower middle class want to spend so much (to the point they struggle to eat) for a bad investment that will lose it’s value after you drive away… I’ll stick with dirty, High mileage diesels with no ad blue, dpf cut out, revving the shit out it while stationary. 🙂

Test drive today Honda CRV highest trim e-HEV 4WD version engine. When compared to KIA sportage, Tiguan, Kodiaq, Volvo XC60 its was clear to me. Honda is winner. What amazed me is the package it offers and comfort to even par with Volvo that is premium. The fuel economy is also great especially in city. Amazingly done Honda. Regarding pricing its still about 10K eur cheaper than Volvo XC60 new and its not highest trim Volvo. Kia is cheap but it has much less stuff than Honda has. Also ride is not as comphy.
Wow! The U.S. version doesn’t get the panoramic sunroof! We just get the regular sunroof, however we get a shifter in the console instead of the push buttons for the gear selector. Also U.S. top specs version CR-V is not plug in hybrid it just hybrid 2.0 liter mated to 3 electric motors producing 204 hp, and about 247 ft lbs of torque, but basically same.
I’ve had a 2016 CRV diesel for 5 years, In that time NOTHING has gone wrong, not one thing. Regular maintenance and new battery (flagged on the service) tyres and brakes and thats it. I’ve had loads of so called “premium” German and other brands but this is without a shadow of a doubt the best car I’ve ever owned. It certainly isn’t the fanciest or fastest but I just know that it won’t let me down. I keep toying with buying something more premium again but then I think, Why ?
4 years ago i purchased a new Cr-v Hybrid AWD. Its list price was 35K but i managed a discount with another online retailer (sorry Mat) at 32k. The equivlant model now is 50k, yes 50k. So its gone up 15k in 4 years when it just a mk5 with a facelift. Sorry but Honda for me, have priced themselves out of the market. When a ordinary working man can’t afford a ordinary SUV there is something wrong. I’m not going to have the car over a longer finance term to buy one too and Honda need to step up and do a 5year warranty like Toyota instead. Whatever the marketing guys are smoking/eating/drinking i’ll have some to as it must be good stuff . Honda will loose some loyal customers over this stupid pricing and i’m the 1st one. YES Honda! You’ve done a good job of copying the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and that’s not a bad thing given that the Outlander is no longer available in the UK. I like that you’ve put physical controls on the dashboard – more of these please. If only you had made the plug-in version 4WD you would have absolutely nailed your Outlander copy – maybe a future model variant? And being a Honda, we can trust that it won’t break. Look forward to seeing these on the used market in 3 to 4 years.
Although I like japanese cars and you can’t deny their durability, prices are crazy. Besides, I’ve had 3 cars with CVTs, 2 of them were Subarus, and while the first time it was kind of funny the feel of it, in real life when you need the power for a slope or overtaking, you really miss a sequential gearbox. You feel like you lose around 30-40% of the engine power just because of that. Now when I look for a new car the first thing I do is to discard all the ones with CVT.
Honda’s pricing in the UK has become absolutely insane. A 2022 Civic Advance (top spec) was priced at £33,000. Expensive but a really good car. Price for a Civic Advance now? £39,795. A 20% price increase 18-ish months. This new CR-V is a great car, but the pricing pushes it up into a bracket that just feels unviable. A real shame.
The pricing may seem nuts considering you can get a BMX X1 or X2 M35i, A Toyota RAV4 PHEV or a Lexus NX Hybrid for less. Depends how much value you put on reliability and running costs as all the Hondas I’ve owned have been trouble free and peanuts to service. But no, I wouldn’t pay £54k for this new CRV.
Too many people getting tied up with the £54k figure. Just bought a regular hybrid Elegance for circa £40k brand new through…….Carwow. Lovely car, have come from a Range Rover Evoque. No issues, I might actually get to enjoy this car rather than it spend most of its time in the dealership being repaired.
I recently was at dealer for a regular service of my current CR-V. He wanted to sell me the new model now since the waiting time is 1 year. I asked how much they would offer me for the current CRV, which is 2019 Lifestyle 1.5 AWD model. He offered 23 K EUR. The new CRV, basic hybrid model with 2wd, costs around 50K EUR. My current car drives fine and looks almost as new. Why should I give such large amount of money? The new model is ok and nice upgrade but the basic price and the price difference are way to high.
I own a CRV hybrid in Canada. There’s no PHEV variant available here. There are so many differences between my car and the RHD versions you guys get in the UK and AUS. I wonder why you guys get those terrible button shifters while we get the conventional one. No wireless android auto? I wish we got the fancy mirror on our sunglasses holder.
5:45 i can tell who’s using the 12v Sockets These days. those WHO Care about their Car and bank account and thus using the Socket to operate a dash cam with it. I would never wanna Miss auch Thing in a car of Mine. Just recently i was in an accident involved and the Cam Just solved all insurance issues and layers of Foul Play to Not Pay the bill. So that’s why u need a 12v Socket.
My 2018 Canadian Accord has almost the same looking center screen and driver’s display. So in five tears time Honda has not made any progress in this area compared to other manufacturers. And they want 54k for it. The overall build quality of the Accord is also poor. Honda is just carrying on on its past and is being left behind.
I get that Honda and Toyota are very reliable and hold longer. However that doesn’t excuse the horrendous pricing for a car that is that boring and lacks any high quality materials inside and outside. The car has no character besides having the badge of Honda on it. You could have put a Dacia badge on the car and I would have believed it. To hide behind the fact that “well we make reliable engines” doesn’t justify the price to me. They are notorious for not really innovating but keeping things simple and constant, so it’s not like they have some huge costs for revolutionary tech.
I think some peoole at Honda are trying to redefine the brand as a luxury brand. However, they’re going about it all wrong or just rushing it. The new design language isn’t cutting it, nor is the tech. Perhaps they need new lines like Toyota’s Century and Crown to redefine themselves like they really want to.
Cars are amazing….. ly expensive these days, so used cars that are run of the mill good family cars that cost low 20’s 5 years ago are being sold by dealers now for almost as much as they cost new and standard the same so called cheap family cars are now costing almost £40k new 🤔. Have ICE car prices gone up so much to make EV’s appear not as expensive 😉🙄😡
What happened to stuffing various plastic water bottles into every nook and cranny and smug looks into camera over ridiculous/useless features? This is vital information, I need to know!!! Also throwing luggage in and out of car simulating temper tantrums would help me visualize the ownership experience! thanks in advance.
Yet another manufacturer that seems incapable of integrating the infotainment display properly into the dash. After all these years of infotainment, why can’t some manufacturers get it right? Compare it to the Hyundai Tucson mentioned early on in the article. Now that is a classy dash layout! The Honda one (and many others) looks so conspicuous. Like its an afterthought. Like some geeky kid has left his ipad stuck on the dash.
Hondas are so overpriced. I feel like they’ve become so irrelevant. You barely see or hear of Honda. At least in my country. Their pricing is their downfall. Also, everything seems so cheap. Look at the door frames. They’re so thin and have pieces of plastic to round it off. In the part with the VW window test, look at the corner of the frame. It’s already rounded in the metal. The Honda looks like 2 pieces of metal welded together and covered by plastic.
Unfortunately I was under the impression I’m supposed to be paid the auction price, and not have some guy dropped off at my house by his wife, and then start haggling the price down! It got to the point I told him to get out of my car as I don’t want to sell it to him and he just continued to mither and tell me he had come all the way from Huddersfield (which was a lie) so I took £166.00 less than the already low auction price just so I could get back to making dinner for my son! And that’s not all! He asked me if my car was still insured and he drove away in it while it was still registered to me! Luckily I’m up to speed with the .Gov, and managed to get the car out of my name in a few minutes, ya know in case he got a speeding ticket or worse! So in conclusion your service is not as advertised, it is not hassle free, I sold my car cheaper than book price, and your service put me at risk! I am disgusted by the events of that night and any feedback I leave on trust pilot will reflect the horrible and dangerous experience your service provides!
