What is the Network Solutions controversy?

In April 2015, the Federal Trade Commission announced that Network Solutions had agreed to settle charges that it misled consumers who bought web hosting services by promising a full refund if they canceled within 30 days. In reality, the FTC stated that the company withheld substantial cancellation fees amounting to up to 30% of the refund.

Network Solutions has faced numerous lawsuits and allegations related to domain-name antitrust, including the sale of MonsterCommerce by VeriSign for $21B in 2000, the sale of a registrar unit by VeriSign for $100 million in 2003, and the acquisition of MonsterCommerce by Network Solutions. The company has also been accused of hacking credit and debit accounts, serving malware, and auto-enrolling customers into a $1, 850 security service by Web. com.

The FTC has also been involved in the legal battle against Network Solutions, which has been criticized for its practices such as displaying customers’ whois queries to the public, promoting online protesting, pre-censoring anti-Islam sites, and hijacking unassigned sub-domains. The company has been accused of stealing domain ideas and serving malware.

In response to these allegations, Network Solutions has made several changes to its operations, such as reducing domain registration fees, lowering domain fees, and offering a more opt-in approach to customer registration. The company has also been accused of violating the DNS (Domain Name System) Act, which prohibits the sale of domain names to anyone other than the owner of the domain.

In addition to the legal battles, Network Solutions has also faced criticism from the media, such as the Dutch Islam film website “shut” by BBC, which has been criticized for its racial bias and the use of a “whois query” feature to display customers’ whois queries to the public.

In addition to the legal battles, Network Solutions has also faced criticism from the media, such as the FTC’s decision to obtain a settlement from Network Solutions LLC for misleading consumers about refunds. This settlement has been met with mixed reactions from the media and the industry, with some arguing that the company’s actions have contributed to the rise of the internet and the potential for further discrimination and exploitation.

In conclusion, Network Solutions has faced numerous lawsuits and allegations related to domain-name antitrust and the sale of its services. The FTC has been working to address these issues and ensure that the industry continues to provide fair and transparent services to its customers.

That would bring more specific knowledge and explanation to average joe along with keeping entertaining to watch. Thanks for the article. A refresh for me and a new command to learn netstat.

  • It’s worth mentioning that the tracert example you showed wasn’t timing out on the first couple of hops because there was a problem. It’s more likely you find your ISP blocks ICMP on their hardware for security purposes.
