Good plan Neil, but with one small catch! When you set up a new account and tell it to backup your photos, it will backup ALL the photos that are stored on your phone, not just the most recent year, which could mean several year’s worth, so you’ll be in the same position you were when you started. If you want an account for each year, for example, you’d need to make sure your phone ONLY had this year’s photos on it. Then you’d need to delete them all from your phone before starting a new account for the next year. Also beware some services sync rather than backup, which means when you delete on your phone, it deletes them online too. The moral being to always backup photos onto a separate physical drive somewhere before doing anything clever!

So I’m an amateur articlegrapher. Each time I do an event, I would upload the footage to my Google Drive and then share it with the client. However this wasn’t working out so good because the files would be eating up my storage. And after leaving the footage on my Drive for over a month I delete it and very next day the client wants to know where it went. So, I came up with a new system. Each time I do an event, I make a new Google account (sometimes two) based on the name of the event or the client, and upload the footage to that Drive. I then share the username and password with the client giving them full control of the account to do what they want with. Now the footage is not taking up my space nor the client’s space and can stay there for eternity (or until Google decides to remove unused accounts etc…) I think it’s a pretty smart idea.

The sound effects on this article were unbearable for me. I had to turn on the captions and lower the volume to the slightest whisper. A summary for those of us that cannot stand the big arrows and constant dings: Just create another google account when you run out of storage and “partner share” all the photos to your primary google account. Neil – very helpful article as my wife has been dealing with a space issue on her account for months now, and we are too thrifty to buy additional storage. I went to her Google Photos and chose to compress her existing photos as suggested. The process is still running, but has already saved .5 GB. Something else interesting happened. When her account was nearly full, Google was keen to offer addition storage (I think 100 GB) for $1.99 per month. The moment that I hit the compress button, the offer changed to a “Special” of $.49 per month for the same amount of storage. Google knows that there is a link between demand and price, I guess.
Hi @neilmossey: Thank you for this informative article. Is there a way that when we create the new google account we can backup just new photos say starting 2024 and not old ones in that. This way we know photos are not duplicated in different drives and we are not backing up same thing in every google photos drive. Thanks again!

I’ve mustered my courage to follow these steps and resolved this perpetual darn storage limit anxiety once and for all. This is gold, thank you Neil. With my years of photos safely stored in the old google account, I set my new account for photos 2024 onwards. To save the new account from duplicating all photos, I transferred them all out of my phone into an external storage disk, leaving only 2024 photos in there – this is done before changing backup setting to the new account in google photo on the phone. I can now toggle between 2 accounts in google photo to see the old and new. Best things ever and I hope more can benefit from your article…Thank you!
This is really helpful thank you so so much. You reminded me of things I’d discovered a while ago but didnt take too much notice of (and now desperately need to do something about my storage) – and you’ve included in this article everything that i need to do. Brilliant. Just one thing – (not too bad in this article), but in others, the sound effects are sooooo annoying that its very off-putting and may even be a reason I can’t watch any more. After I got rid of 8gb google doc files I found out that I had permanently deleted the major file i use daily. I contacted google support and within 15 min, all the permanently deleted files were restored. did it via chat. this happened maybe a year or so ago and my office person had to contact them. this time i did it. the important thing is do not delay a single second!! at a certain point, even they can’t help you. do not panic; just contact them.

This is an interesting alternative to get more space in Photos and I had thought about it before. I have a couple of questions on this method. 1) Once I log into my new Google account in my mobile phone, will I be able to get my messages from my regular Gmail account? The issue is that when you create a new account and turn on backup, it starts backing up all the photos on your phone, including those already backed up to another account. As a result, you quickly receive a notification that there is no space left. Is there an option to back up only recent photos instead of everything? If not, this feature is not useful to me.

I just came across this article. Thanks for the tips as our paid family icloud account has been full for months and Dad refuses to pay for more storage. When I backed up everything from my iPhone 15 Pro to Google Photos I hit the max. Thats alright though as I just wanted to have access to all that on demand. The issue I have is that I thought that all my albums would transfer over as well. Instead it is 15GB of photos back to back by date. Is there anyway to keep all the pictures in their original albums?

I am recovering from major brain surgery & everything is just too hard. All my pictures are reduced in size. And I won’t keep them on Google drive.. Just in my phone and a backup computer plus backup external disks. All my audio files are reduced to mp3 most to 64kbits. Some great music to 128 kbits. Exeptional music kept as wave. On my phone and also on a backup computer and backup external disks. Google drive? I made 15 Google accounts and the things I want to share are on all those accounts. If full, I make another Google account. Extra email etc. On my phone I have open some 10 google accounts. Life is free…

Excellent tutorial. Unfortunately nothing I do will free up space from Gmail. I’ve deleted over 10k emails over the past 24 hours, which consists of sending the emails from Inbox to Trash, and then purging the Trash. Doesn’t matter. I’m still at 91%. I’ve been trying to do this for 2-3 years, and nothing I do frees up space. Any advice?
As years go by and you have 4 family members making photos on phones and camera, the question to the IT guy (dad) is : how to ensure that we have a shared location that is in sync and where photos that are already these are not duplicated and how we do we ensure there is a backup and how can we remove pictures that are already centralized. If you a (e.g.Synology) NAS you can assign each family member a folder (via drive).Then turn on Cloud Sync and sync google drive, onedrive and other locations centrally e.g.each sunday. Then run a de-duplication script to move duplicates to a duplicates folder. In that way you have e.g. 2015-12-23_Xmas as the folder for all photos of that day from all sources. You can then backup from the location to any backup location and your costs are equally to a hard disk cost e.g. 12 Tb for 100 euro for around 5 years limetime average for a disk. All photos synced can be removed each week since centralized.

Hi Neil, interesting article, l have a question, hope you still active online. So basically all that you have said is going on with one of my friends mobile, she has a Redmi 12 Samsung mobile and l clicked on clean some space up, at no point did l click a delete icon, before clicking on this it showed 2404 items articles, photos etc after the process completed the number went down to 1709 but there were other items separately showing foe example 752 articles to cut it short, l friend says that she created a folder that is missing. l cannot how this can be when at no point l clicked delete l simply asked google to free some space. Pls advice
It’s a good idea. But one thing you say a few times is about being able to create a new account every year. But that isn’t repeatedly going to help with the photo stuff, is it? You can have a dedicated account for photos (nice to know), but only one, isn’t it? I suppose you can’t back-up half your photos to one Google account, and half to another: when you’ve got 15GB of reduced-quality photos, that’s ya lot, isn’t it?
I hv like 5 gmail accounts by now to get rid of this problem but whenver I hv opened a new account and started backing up photos ( after removing old photos from my phone to some other physical storage- my phone now has some recent photos only) it gets full fast by backing up old photos from old accounts !! I’m attempting to do these functions via my android phone. I did all up to the part that you state to go to Google Photos app then go to the avatar then to ” Recover Storage “. Thanks for sharing this method. However, you are still limited to the account’s storage, which is 15GB. Making multiple accounts is okay if you are not a heavy photos/video person. You will run out of space! Better options: – Buy a NAS and put your photos and articles in there. Back up with multiple redundancy. A mere 15GB on Google account compared to TBs of hard drives. Storage is cheap these days! – Get the Pixel 1, install Resync on both the Pixel 1 and your current phone, and upload unlimited photos in “original” quality from your Pixel 1 only. Much better! Google allows the OG Pixel to do this because that was its selling point back then. I use both of these options. 👍
Great workaround. But for $19 per year to have 100gb storage, i think i will do that over the hassle of creating multiple accounts to manage. Since i have paid, i will just have to wait until i hit 100gb, then will switch to this method. I am not sure if there’s a way to move all my existing photos on google storage to another account in a seamless way
Thanks ….it says I got 4 years storage left. It’s a pain in the ass to mistakenly delete files and lose them because storage is full. Or not be able to upload your articles to social media. Which was what happened in my situation. I don’t no why these technologies aren’t designed better. Google should give free storage. All the damn money Bill Gates makes. Can I send all these SMS files to an external Hard Drive on my PC from Google Drive? I backed up all the SMS files and have about 2 years worth! This fix appears to only work IF all your photos are actually stored on your phone. If you have deleted some along the way, is there an option move some from your original google account over to the new “yearly” storage account? Being able to move photos from one google account to another would make managing this much easier. Thanks for your ideas, I just need to work on them a little more for my own circumstance – actually work on them for my wife’s phone which is the one in the family that tends to max out the storage with photos and especially articles.

When I try to create a new google account it says that I have to input a phone number, and when I do it says “this phone number has been used too many times”. Upon further research there is apparently a limit of 5 account per phone number. Any idea of how to work around this?

HI Neil, Thanks for your response. While I have compressed my Photos in Main Gmail account and partner shared with my another new Gmail a/c as suggested in your youtube post. By compressing photos in my main Gmail account, the storage limit has gone down to almost 62% and it should meet my present need. But, I have not been able to understand what was the purpose of my ‘surrogate new account’? Is it for doing a ‘partner share’? or is there another way to transfer my existing photos in my main Gmail account to my new surrogate account? Could you please clarify. Pl. note, I have added my new Gmail account in my Main gmail account where my storage limit had almost FULL. Hello, THANKS for another great article and advice ! I have just one question for you if you have a time for answer. I want to copy my phone memo card to extern hard disk for safety. And after that, back to phone. If I, in meanwhile, delete photos in Google photos, if when I back memo card to phone Google recognize that photo on memo card and delete it, without my permission ? Wouldn’t this multiple account solution need deleting old photos first? If so is shared partner copy stored locally on the device without quality loss? What happens when google server that stores that part of photos malfunction, do you have your photos lost or are they stored on your phone at original (or that slightly compressed, if chosen) quality?
Well after suffering with space for ages I recently succumbed and paid for the 100gb (but wish I didn’t have to). I’m now sitting at 16gb. So I thought I’d give your method a try. Unfortunately when it goes to compress the photos I get a message to say it could take hours. I have left it running for 24hrs now and it’s still not finished. Any ideas? Thanks for the article
hello mate, is there any possibility to set up back up from specific date. I don’t want delete photos from my phone, but I’d like to stay in automatically back- up mode. How could i prevent from backup of all photos from my phone to the new linked google account? Doing this manually should be rly a pain in the ass. Thx.
Hi, I am seriously struggling here (in France). Google has stopped downloading emails, photos etc due to out of storage. I have watched your article over and over again but the recover storage on my mobile is clear its (grey) which means I can’t access this and go on with your instructions. I have finally found the storage saver link and pressed that but nothing has changes as far as I can see. I am 87.5% full and everything has stopped….madness as I am waiting on urgent emails to come in……Will these be in outlook if I revert back to Microsoft as I’m android. Can you help me? Its Wednesday Sept 13th ( it might as well be a Friday)….Jilly
I did this and backed everything up to my new account but my old account is now (somehow?!) full and won’t let new emails in. How come when you do this, it frees up your original account? How can I free up space without deleting my pictures, so that emails can come in? I’m so tired of deleting emails…. I have gone through and deleted over 30,000 emails and still it’s full up?? I’ve made a new account, partnered it up with my original account, backed stuff up on there, but my old account is still full??? I dont understand.
I kept my old Google Pixel phone which allows unlimited original quality uploads in Google Photos. My Pixel 7 doesn’t, so I turn off back up on the new phone and periodically use Nearby Share to send to the old Pixel, which then backs them up. Photos and articles on my laptop are backed up to OneDrive, and then I download them onto my Pixel, which also backs those up! Because it’s backed up it means I can access them all on my Pixel 7. I’d suggest maybe buying an old Pixel and doing the same.
Great article and thanks. I have a couple questions about sharing across multiple accounts. If you have multiple accounts across the years shared with your main account, what about things like tagging faces? I use that all the time to find photos of my family and friends. Does it only draw from the main account or can it find the faces by name from the shared accounts? Similarly, can you create an album that includes the photos from the shared Google Photos accounts? E.g. Currently I have a photo album with over 7K of photos that I use as the source for a photo frame app on my kitchen counter. If I were to start creating other accounts, can I still add photos from the shared accounts into my “Photo Frame” album in the primary account?

I got the exact problem from google photos and they were sending gmails like “you’ll stop getting emails on ***” and I was panicking, didn’t know what to do. So I decided to press ‘free up space’ and turns out they deleted some of my photos from my actual gallery in my phone. I’m really sad but thankfully I figured out the way to bring the photos back to my actual gallery. And now that I see this article, I feel so stupid why didn’t I do some research first before I clicked buttons that I didn’t even know the function for. I tried to create 2 email accounts in a row, I already had one. Creating the 3rd when google is asking for my telephone number to verify the account, it says “This number has been used too often.” Since a code is sent to my number to activate the account, they obviously put a limit on the amount of accounts you can have with one telephone number. 🙁

Since your original posting of this article, Google Photo app seems to have changed the setups, but I managed to use your instructions. 😊 But my old (original that got nearly full) Google account still back up new photos I take (now that I put space saver mode) as my new Google photo account does. Is there a way to stop the backup in my old Google photo account now and to have only the new account function as backup? Hope this question makes sense.
Trying to switch from Galaxy photos to Google Photos, and I have so many pictures and articles that it shows my storage is full. I don’t want to lose any of the articles or pictures I have. Is there any way to just move the pictures from Google Photos to “on device” so they aren’t completely backed up, and Google Photos is just where I view all the pictures I’ve taken? I don’t want to have to lose any, but I also want to change gallery apps. I’m looking at switching from Samsung to Pixel.
I just pay $20 a year for 100gb. I can afford that, problem solved. Cheaper than buying a Starbuck’s every other month, and no need to cheap out with multiple google accounts. But I do have multiple different gmail accounts (I won’t say how many here…), useful for controlling spam and creating multiple YouTube websites. Thanks for the useful info however.
Hi Neil. Everything is working as per every step of the way but (I don’t know how big of a problem this will be for people) but Google now wants your phone number when creating a new account regardless of it being a personal account or a work account. Just to point it out Also I seem to be experiencing a problem where the invitation doesn’t want to be sent to myself e. g. “trouble sending invitation, please try again later” I do not know what I’m doing wrong. Hi Neil, I’ve been creating accounts like this for photos, but after the 2nd-3rd account, when I’m creating a new account, google asks for contact number to confirm you’re not a robot. It isn’t accepting the same phone number I used for the previous accounts. I can use my parents’ or relatives’ number, but for how long if I create a new account every year? Can you please help on this?
I want to move my articles off Google Drive, I don’t want to make the quality worse, or delete anything. Google doesn’t allow you to download. When you do try, it zips everything and you can’t open it. I’m done with using Google to store anything. It may be duplicating everything anyway, and causing a massive amount of confusion.
Misleading title! How is this fixing Google storage space “forever”?? Compressing the photos will make it last a bit longer than before, but forever??? Also, asking to create a new Google account for more storage… duh, genius idea, might as well patent it. Not to mention, this photo compression “trick” (if I may call it that) will not work for people who have other types of files in Google.
God bless you. The problem with google drive is much like you are pointing about a deliberate, persistent and annoying popup messages from Google for buying more space. To further aggravate the issue the problem expands it cross-device, showing everywhere you work: desktop, tablet, phone and every device you use with google services. This type of siege is exhausting. I don’t know about marketing that much, however these kind of practices raise a concern about the services we use and the way a company can monopolize a person’s environment.
The problem with this method is though that once that …2025 account is full and you create a new account to synch your photo, once again all of the previously to the …2025 account synched photos will be synched to the new account as well. So while previously you were able to store the 15GB of photos on the account now you’re maybe at 20GB – which won’t fit on the new account and you’re creating a backup copy of the already backed up files. So… while you do get more storage with more accounts with backing up photos via goggle photos by automatically synching them this sadly is not a working solution.
I tried to create different gmail accounts. Once created, when I logged in, google is asking for a phone number for verification, when I entered my personal number, google detected it’s using too many times and does not allow my log in. Any ways to prevent google is requiring to add a phone number for verification?
One thing that you need to consider is that Google are now saying that if there is no activity for 2 years the account will be deleted along with all the photographs. I always have a backup of my photographs on hard disk in full resolution. I was also lucky enough to have all my photographs converted to low resolution when Google started to limit the free space. Those photographs do not count against my limit. I just compressed my newer files to space saver and that has helped my storage. I like the idea of setting up additional google accounts to get more storage, but, I am not sure how it will work when I take a photograph I will need to be logged into the new account, but when I want to read emails or look at other stuff on my google drive I will need to be in the old account. Is this the case?
“what if your house burns down or NAS is stolen” – Most of us connect an external drive to the NAS, back up the important data to it automatically, and then put it in a Fireproof & Waterproof safe along with our passports/ wills and other important stuff. Rotate it with last month’s backup drive. Don’t have a safe? keep the external drive in your car/ parent’s house. “Cloud providers, they don’t go down” – eh… nope. Just google “google services down” and see that 3 days ago (at the time of writing this) it was down. “Can you backup the NAS offsite?” – 100% – you can do a NAS-to-NAS backup. So you take your nas and it gets backed up to your NAS located in your office or your parent’s house. In fact, you can set up the NAS for your parents/ brothers/ sisters and you become each other’s backup. If you want to, use CloudSyc to back up your data from your NAS to the Cloud and visa versa. So when Google goes down, or if you are locked out of your Google account, you can still access your stuff. You can use BackBlaze too. I want MY data to remain under MY control. If you don’t and trust Cloud providers, by all means – you do that. Just please back up your stuff – and NOT just your documents. I have been in this industry for a long time and I 100% know that the same people who come up with all the excuses of why “on prem NAS is a bad idea”, are the same people who will bitch and moan WHEN they lose their data and have to rebuild their entire system because they only backed up some data so they can make use of the “free storage”.
Unfortunately, my house burned down in 2021. My family and I are fine, but we lost almost everything. Fortunately, my data is backed up on the cloud and it was hassle-free to access my data. NAS systems are great for those who can afford it, but it IS a physical system you must maintain and it’s vulnerable to fire, natural disasters, and theft. Cloud storage is off-site and that’s the biggest selling point for me. I’ll stick with my external hard drive and my cloud storage option. It works for me.
That’s why I wish they never got rid of DVDs. The DVD media itself isn’t prone to shocks, floods, hackers, malware, extreme temps, or data depletion. Only scratches and fire. DVD’s, if kept safely and securely, can lasts 100yrs. I saved all my pictures on dvd in the early years. I just wished they improved it. Imagine 100gb Dvd that are as fast as ssd.
Unfortunately I am one of the few that couldn’t afford the price for this so what I ended up doing instead is I own probably 5 backup HDD’s that are encrypted and I use a simple adapter to copy/transfer all my files to every single drive and then put each drive in a locked, fire/water proof safe. Tedious but works like a charm. For my phone however I back it up to my pc or keep files local that I need but also I am one of the few that rarely leaves my home. Great article though as I have been wondering about this. Tired of Google Drive and am really not liking or trusting Google Photos as much anymore. I only put what I am willing to lose on those with zero personal info and back it up to the hdds weekly. *As a side note I also have 3 backup clone drives for my pc specifically. Something very few people I personally know do. Its amazing how many people get so upset when their hdd or ssd fails and their computer doesn’t boot anymore and wonder what to do. I work on pcs all the time and these are amongst the most common calls for service.
No offense, but this is just terrible advice. You are still using one device that is prone to failure, even though you have multiple drives inside. Power surge, fire, theft etc. Not true redundancy, not a way of doing backups professionally. What if you are travelling and your internet connecting is down? and so many more ways for this to go wrong.
Why is the term ‘backup’ used for a single copy/ instance of files and data? I.e. I’ve always considered “backup’ to mean additional copies besides those on my PC hard drive. I understand advantages of data storage on a NAS but wouldn’t consider that backup unless it was a copy with originals located elsewhere.

Unfortunately there is one thing I didn’t understand completely: You said that this NAS option would be better if you don’t trust cloud providers, on the other hand you create an account on Synology and have to agree to the EULA that you didn’t read. What is the big difference between Synology and Google, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.?
I use syncthing on my phone and older phones with only WIFI, and also older laptops and tablets. SyncTrazor makes it even easier on a Windows computer. Everything is encrypted and synced only to my devices, nothing in the cloud. So I can have my DCIM photo/video folder on my phone replicated on 2 laptops, a tablet, and another computer. Or however many computers I want. I take photos on one camera, it saves everywhere. You can do it with any folder (not just photos) on any device, and share it across them all. Open source and free.
People seem to forget one very good reason for NOT using “cloud storage”. Your data is on somebody else’s computer. Apple devices are always nagging me to set up “cloud storage”. No thanks, you already do your best to lock up my data on a device I own (ostensibly), and it seems Microsoft is doing the same by encrypting your data on your hard drive but keeping the decrypt key firmly with them. If I need to store data I do it on at least one external drive and a memory stick just to be sure.
I agree with you that I would like to have the DATA on a RELIABLE DRIVE I HAVE ACCESS TO. I believe that the better thing to do it automatically back it up to a second off-site (maybe at your parents house) drive and in some case even on a third overseas location if you have a relative or friend available over there. What do you suggest?
I have both a Synology and a QNAP but still use a cloud storage location for backup. If your NAS is in the same physical location as you main working file location then you have FAILED to properly backup your data. Your NAS vs Cloud is simply wrong. It should be NAS and Cloud. A proper 3-2-1 backup strategy is simply ignored here. One copy of your backup should be off site. What you have in this article is a poorly disguised attempt to monetize commissions from selling Synology NAS’s.
so this is no different on cloud? since you still giving your data to have an access. And why do you only have 1 external hd? Most people will buy 2-3 external to make sure that their data are safe? $600 for that? You could bought like 20 1tb of external hard disks for that and use it to back up all of your file.
Are this synergy backup systems not very expensive 🤔 nothing for poor people like me and I don’t like special power plug ports, if I would like power it a other way its a pain to get adapters, also why not use the routers USB ports for backups instead wit more drives putt on a clonning drive stuck in module, that works without a pc, you send data to it and it copying all data to the rest drives automatically and they cost only 50£ or so. 🤔
Just be aware, it is not a backup solution, no matter what RAID / NAS you set up, if you by accident delete files, they are gone…. you have security against harddrive failure, but not delete files…. or malware / ransomeware…. so some would use the NAS for storing everything, and have a cloud backup service as a real backup.
So just another single point of failure, and it’s exposed to the Internet. My most important documents live on Dropbox and are synced to more than one of my systems. They are also backed up to an entirely different online backup service along with the rest of my files. I’ve spun up a new MacBook entirely from my backups with no need to transfer anything from the old MacBook. (In fact, I wouldn’t have it any other way, as it serves as a regular check of the quality of my backup solution.) This Synology thing is the second worst backup solution a person can have. The only thing worse is a single external drive, and that’s only because the NAS drive can be configured to be more reliable with RAID. Literally every other backup solution is better than this.

This is still a single point of failure. If the synology gets fried due to some electrical surge etc, your data is gone because both the hard drives are connected to & powered by the same device. Just make 2 backups on the separate hard drives. Its not difficult if you setup a schedule & use freeware like syncback SE. And its WAY cheaper. These really are gimmicks, people trying to get you to buy their stuff when its not actually needed, and sometimes not even the best option to accomplish whatever it is you’re trying to. Save your hard-earned $$$.
Flawed advice. Agree with the Synology or similar NAS device like QNAP but 1. You don’t need a 4 bay NAS costing a fortune (feel like he was obligated to promote this as article was sponsored by Synology but they have much better priced single bay NAS) 2. You can use OneDrive which is simple to use from mobiles and PCs and then have Synology sync OneDrive or Google drive to NAS. Now you have data in cloud and NAS. A fatal flaw in this suggestion is what if someone breaks in and steals your NAS or you knock it off the table, power surge, or your kid breaks it. It’s the same as your portable drive crashing. Rather have data in the cloud and backed up to NAS
Most of the negatives you brought up against external hard drives apply to NASs. They are single points of failure if it’s what you rely upon to store all your data. Viruses can spread to them. Especially when you have less security protocols that billion dollar companies employ. NASs are cool, but I think that cloud solutions are actually more practical for most that are not tech savvy.
