The War Memorial Opera House is a historic opera house in San Francisco, California, designed by Arthur Brown, Jr. in the American Renaissance style. It was built in 1932 as a war memorial for the Americans who served in the First World War. The building is part of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center and has been home to the San Francisco Opera since its opening night in 1932.
The War Memorial Opera House offers a world-class setting for opera, ballet, and theater performances. With its elegant lines, vaulted and coffered ceilings, state-of-the-art lighting and equipment, and 3,200 seats, it rivals Old World theaters. The 250,000 square foot facility is home to the second largest opera company in the United States.
The auditorium at the War Memorial Opera House is simple, direct, and dignified, with a breadth of 113 feet, height of 74 feet, and depth varying from 116 feet at the orchestra level to 161 feet at the balcony level. The primary rehearsal hall (A) features an orchestra pit, fly space, and stage area with dimensions equal to those of the Opera House.
The Opera House is a monument to San Francisco’s dead from WWI and played host to the drafting of the UN charter in 1945. It is one of the largest performing arts centers in the United States, covering 7.5 acres (3 hectares) in the Civic Center Historic District and totaling 7,500 seats.
The War Memorial Opera House is one of the most culturally significant performing arts venues in San Francisco, with the San Francisco Opera organization being one of its most significant members. The venue is available for licensee use and can be rotated as space becomes available.
