What years are the YJ Jeeps?
The Jeep Wrangler YJ is the first generation of Jeep Wrangler four-wheel drive small off-road vehicles, rebadging and succeeding the CJ series, which was produced from 1944 to 1986. Launched in 1986, the first Wrangler (internally “YJ”) ran through 1995. The Wrangler featured an updated interior, improved safety and handling, and a revised chassis with a wider track and slightly lower stance. Development of a potential CJ-7 replacement began in 1982, with engineering and design work under Chuck Mashigan.
A final design freeze occurred in 1983, and the first production body test prototypes were built in 1984. The 1987 model year Jeep Wrangler was unveiled in February 1986, entering production in March and going on sale on May 13, 1986. The Wrangler was built in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, until the plant closed in 1992. Production was then moved to Toledo, Ohio, using the same plant that produced the Willys Jeeps during World War II. Jeep could not use the Wrangler name in Canada due to General Motors’ use of the name on a truck variant.
Why are Jeep YJ so expensive?
Jeep Wranglers are highly expensive due to their unique combination of heritage, capability, and design. The law of supply and demand plays a significant role in pricing, with Jeep maintaining higher prices due to consistent demand and limited production volume. Competitors like the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Bronco, and Land Rover Defender offer similar off-road capabilities, but Jeep’s iconic status and dedicated following give it an edge.
Additionally, Jeep’s pricing can be influenced by currency fluctuations, as the value of the US dollar against other currencies can impact the cost of materials and components, affecting the final price of the vehicle. For example, a weakening US dollar could increase the cost of importing components from foreign suppliers, leading to higher production costs.
How many miles does a Jeep YJ last?
Jeep Wranglers typically last 10-15 years, with an average range of 100, 000-280, 000 miles. Regular service intervals are essential to reach the maximum lifespan of a Jeep. High mileage Jeep Wranglers are generally more reliable, as the higher the mileage, the less expensive it will be. Can a Jeep Wrangler last 20 years?
A well-maintained Jeep Wrangler can last between 15 to 20 years, with many remaining strong beyond this mark, especially with proper maintenance. Mileage ranges from 200, 000 to 300, 000 miles, which is impressive considering the Wrangler’s off-road capabilities and potential wear. With good care, it’s not unusual for a Wrangler to keep running strong beyond this range. What is the life expectancy of a Jeep soft top?
Soft tops are not indestructible and can be replaced after five to 10 years, depending on usage and material quality. Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage soft tops, causing discoloration, such as fading black to gray, and streaking due to acidic rain and UV damage. This can be observed in vinyl, where the lighter the shade, the more damage. Regular inspections can help prolong the life of your soft top. It’s crucial to monitor your top’s condition and take preventive measures to prevent further damage.

The half door handles are pretty similar but everything is easier to get to. The CJ/YJ full doors are sweet though! I love the little vent windows in the front. How did the door line up with the windshield angle? My soft uppers line up perfectly but in order to get my hard uppers to fit properly I have to wedge a wood chip under them to angle them up a bit. Just wondering if factory soft top YJs had a slightly different windshield angle, or was it just my doors out of alignment?
JUST DONE THIS TO MY YJ, TRADED A COMPOUND BOW FOR 2 DOORS… LET THE HIGH SCHOOL FIX THEM CUZ THEY HAD A FEW DENTS AND RUST THEN I BOUGHT ALL NEW TRIM AND HANDLES IN AND OUT, THESE THINGS NEEDED LOTS OF PARTS… ANYWAY THEY CAME OUT GREAT….
