Mark provides a tutorial on upgrading or swapping the upholstery on Jeep Wrangler seats, offering cheap and easy ways to refresh an old interior. The video shows how to restore plastic parts of the TJ interior (including the dashboard), and it is a fun and rewarding experience. Customizing your Jeep Wrangler’s interior for comfort and aesthetics can be a fun and rewarding experience, considering your budget and personal style when choosing upgrades.
The thread covers all things related to maintaining, repairing, restoring, cleaning, and parts replacing of TJ’s door and trim panels, consoles, carpet, seat covers, roll bar covers, etc. The best way to remove them is using a flat split angles tool, which you slip under the panel near the clip and pry outwards. Other methods of holding door panels on include tangs that drop into holes in the inner door skin.
The 2025 Jeep® Wrangler is the most recognizable and capable vehicle on the planet, built on the brand’s goal to deliver freedom of choice. It builds on the brand’s goal to deliver leading off-road capability, iconic Jeep design, open-air freedom, and advanced features.
Is it possible to keep A/C, cruise control, door lock, and electric windows? Some people have done an engine plus interior swap, removing the JL computers and dash and putting analog gauges like in older models.
There are several cheap and easy ways to refresh an old Jeep Wrangler interior, such as using Jeep Wrangler carpeting kits to add different colors and patterns to the floors. Paint failings can almost always be traced to the prep stage, so make sure everything is scuffed up and super clean before primer hits it.
In summary, customizing your Jeep Wrangler’s interior for comfort and aesthetics can be a fun and rewarding experience, considering your budget and personal style when choosing upgrades.

In this video I install two unique custom leather interiors in my Jeep Wrangler. I’ll take you on a tour of the Katzkin facility and show …
📹 Functional JEEP INTERIOR UPGRADES
Over the years I have made several changes to my Jeeps interior. In this video I share with you the current upgrades I have …
Amazing how things change, in the 70’s i worked in a leather factory, the highest job (other than designer) was the Cutter. – during this article i never saw a cutter, sewers yes other than that machines, laborers but machinery took the other jobs. On the plus side you have a US Factory – the factory i worked at was moved south then to the far east.
Very cool. I loved seeing this. I too love seeing how things are made. I used to watch those old science shows in the 80s that showed things like this. I have known about Katzkin for a few years. Hope one day I can have my jeep done. Most of my work for my jeeps has been on the interior as I have a black and turquoise Fear theme going. Your jeeps look great.
Question about the”cooling” and heating option from katskin, if the JL already had heated “cold weather” seats, did katskin disable that when adding their own heated/cooling elements with their covers? Or does katskin wiring harness tie into jeeps cold weather package somehow? In other words, if ordering a new jeep JL and if also planning to then order katskin cooling/heated elements with their skins, would it make better sense to omit the factory cold weather package if katskin will be bypassing it?
The red and black combo looked so classy and just made the inside of your jeep pop. I think I will get mine done as well. I never knew Katzkin was in my old hometown of Montebello. I will be sure to let them know that I saw your article. Loved the Trailrecon stitching too. Now I just need to figure out what I want to write on my seats.
Does adding the Katzkin guarantee the OEM & DoT level of seat airbag reliability? Since Wranglers still don’t have side airbags, the seat airbags are a very critical safety system in these vehicles. My understanding is that OEM seats have a very specific method of sewing the seams for proper force & speed of bag deployment and tested to work properly.
Brad, can you just choose between a few patterns and colors or is pretty much everything possible? Also is full leather (no vinyl) an option? Do they offer the home installation only in California ur nation wide? Jeeps are looking amazing. Any reason the JK did not get the trailrecon logo on the seat?

Hey Brad, I’ve been fumbling around with electronics during my off road adventures for years, and I have a box full of broken, shaky, and purchased but uninstalled device holders to show for it. But thanks to several yoo-toobers and especially thanks to you I just ordered a whole new “system” for Christmas. I got the JK Vector Off road cross bar, and some 67 designs mounts for the phone and some ram mount stuff and 67 designs components to mount my Samsung Tab A to the Cross bar. Like you I find all the current GPS based equipment, even the most expensive units designed for off road, lacking features and functionality and being incredibly behind the curve technologically speaking. Thanks for sharing your wisdom! Keep up the rockin article’s. Hope to catch you in the Eastern Sierra sometime some!
Great article, thanks for the walk through!!! Just started using Gaia as well and really like it too, can map out your rides and share too, as well as being reliable. Nice set up, I think my favorite mod of your build is the CO2….I haven’t pulled the trigger on that one yet. Thanks again for sharing!!
ARB Dual Compressor: 37″ from 15psi to 30psi, all 4 wheels in 7min. I couldn’t be happier with that. Thanks for for your walk around Brad. Can’t imagine to commute in my Jeep every day for 2h. There are for sure sure cars out there to do that task more in style. Hope to meet you one day out there on So Cal trails. Want to promote your barber too? You are always super sleek! 😉
I just ordered my vector mounting bar tonight! I’m so excited to install it. However I could not order the 67 mount because it’s out of stock so I have to wait. I guess it’s a really popular mount. I just subbed and I love this website I have found so many mods I’m gonna do in my Jeep aside from the normal lift tires and regear. I love my Jeep so much and now I can make it even better!
Nice interior upgrades Brad. I recently switched over to CO2 as well for speed and ease but kept my ARB dual setup under the passenger’s seat as a backup. You know the old saying, two is one and one is none. I went with 2 ten pound tanks as my wife and I routinely go on week long trips and this will allow enough for those long trips. Mike
Hi Brad, long time Jeeper and SAR guy here. Loved the article and appreciate your efforts and hard work. Please accept my comments from experience and personal impressions. My intent is from a place of respect. In the event of a collision your setup concerns me. One of the things you want to be sure to think about is flying interior “debris” (your audience needs to be aware). The dash crossbar strikes me as a point of potential injury. I love the idea but….A-Pillars are “fairly” strong but when compromised anything attached will be at the mercy of force..think chrome moly and welded, think Baja racing 🙂 Manufactures (Jeep ) go to great extremes to reduce potential occupant injury. No-one expects the worst scenarios, but they can and do happen. Any accessories above the chest/torso, in the event of a collision or mutliple rollover can compromise or exacerbate the inability of airbags to function properly (interference/puncture) and severely injure occupants. My advice is keep the driver compartment as clean and uncluttered as possible. All of my electronic accessories are either secured via A-Pillar mounted, under dash, or under seat. I am curious about the Ipad and why the need to be mounted externally when there SO many in dash units on the market that interface with smaller form factor smart devices, GPS included. Regarding your SPOT device, I have carried one for years. I hunt, fish and “wheel” in very remote areas of Washington state. Please consider this an “On-person” device.
Enjoyed your article Brad. I just wanted to let you know you need to do 1 thing that might save your life. IF you ever Roll your Jeep. You will want to either move your Seatbelt cutter OR Velcro it to the Console Lid or inside it. Reason; IF you roll it and you go to open it up…where is the knife going to when the console is opened-up? Out of the Console and on the roof or the door….And, You would be lucky to ever catch it when that happen’s. Just an Tip is all.
Great article – Just found your series and had to laugh as most of interior mods were what I have just installed in my 2018 JKU recon. I though i was original, nothing like finding a youtube article explaining how to create your “creation” after the fact. I use the RAM mount claws on the vector bar to move things around easier, and ran SOOW 14-2 cable on the outlet of my inverter to supply 12V and 120v to back of my jeep under the paneling. My small inverter (800w non true sine) is mounted below the glove box and is routed through the foam filled hole with 2 GA 40 strand cable with 120 amp waterproof breaker at battery (30 bucks). My cheaper version of s pod (rugged ridge) I cut the plugs, waterproofed splices using SOOW 14-2 cords (made better harness) to control pillar lights, aux 12v and 120 to front and back for a nice clean pro set up. the cable was cheaper (.92 cents/foot) than going to autozone and buying 1 of 2 stands of 14 gauge generic wire and saved me from making a harness – plus with a little soapy water, I was able to pull 4 cables through the foam filled holes (which I filled with “Great Stuff fireblock and grommeted ) and around the lip easily – and it is waterproof, and is rated for 600v. I would recommend you relocate that inverter right away under your seat in case it rains or area gets wet for a small one you mount under the metal bracket below the glove box – and have a nice access to run it through panels or into dash easily and neatly plus if you have big hands and fat fingers – it is an easy install for a novice .
Hello Brad, and thank you for all of your content. You really do a great job, and as someone who is still learning a lot about his Jeep, your articles are super informative and helpful. I have a question about the air compressor and CO2 that you talked about. You mentioned going from the compressor to CO2 when you went to bigger tires. Was the ARB compressor not able to air up the larger tires to a good pressure, or did it just take FOREVER to get to a good pressure? I’m trying to decide what I want on my own Jeep. Thanks again for what you do, and thanks for your time.
You have a great setup in your Jeep!! How do you find the fridge operation in desert temperatures, do you have any problems with it? Do you had power problems with the fridge due to only having one battery? Why don’t you run two 6 gauge wires (positive & negative) from the battery underneath the Jeep (on top of the chassis rail) to the back for the fridge. The fridge will run much better with thicker direct power wire, for the plug at the back use a Harrison plug. Harrison plugs will not fail under rattle and vibrations, you just need to install on the fridge power wire also a Harrison plug (cut off the cigar plug). The positive wire needs a 50amp fuse or you can just install a trip fuse as well. I did that setup on my Mitsubishi Triton and the 40 litre Engle fridge run like a dream from just the main battery. Im planning to install a second battery to the setup with a 20amp DCDC charger. I will also upgrade the fridge to a 50 litre Dometic like yours.
Great article Brad! You have a well thought out set up. One thing I didn’t see inside your jeep was a sport cage. Looks like you do some pretty hardcore wheeling and over-landing. What are your pros and cons for the sport cage? Why aren’t you running one? Or is it just on the future upgrade list? Great articles keep them coming!
What’s up brad and the trail recon team! Hey is there anyway you can make a article on how to use the Gaga map system from a OHV prospective? I’m new to it obviously but I wanna be able to explore more and I feel like others will Benefit as well. Thank you! Love the website and I’ve learned so much from this great production 😁
nice! I like my Hot Heads liners, but I haven’t compared them to stock, I know they’ve made a difference though. Have you made a list of the tools you keep in your bag? I know there’s a lot of forum post about it, but no one really covers everything they take, it’s either bits and pieces of what you need or an entire mechanics tool set in the suggestions. I have put together a kit, it would just about fill a bag the size of yours, but I’m sure I’ll be able to get rid of some things as time goes by and I find them to be excess, I wanted to have some extras in case I’m not helping fix a Jeep.
Hey Master Chief, great website. You have me hooked. As a retiree like yourself, I was wondering if you have encountered any businesses that give military discounts on Jeep mods? I didn’t consider it until I came across Morris 4×4 center which offers active military/retirees/veterans/First Responders a 5% discount plus free shipping on any order. Every dollar counts when modifying my toy plus I’d love to tell my wife that I received a “military discount” on all parts I purchase. I need something to counter the “I got it on sale” clothes shopping line that I receive. Just curious. Semper Fi Doc! Keep up the good work.
A tablet is the way to go for music, movies and gps forget about the touchscreen radios they suck just make sure you get a good tablet not a cheap one i use a asus z10 for about a year now and travel every 2 months of 400 miles not counting on my daily drive. i use 3 vent magnets to hold the tablet had no problems or worries of it falling
Hi Brad, I got hit by a drunk driver at 100+ mph while traveling 55 and it flipped my Jeep over and caught on fire. I was stuck upside down and locked into me seat by my seatbelt. I was hanging upside down for over 20 minutes fearing I was going to be burned alive or hit by another motorist. I now have three seat belt cutters in every vehicle I own, in fact I think it should be required as part as your yearly inspection. Thank god the first responder had a sear belt cutter.
Hi Brad, I just subscribed to your website! Amazing articles, well edited and EXTREMELY helpful. Your knowledge of Jeeps is exactly the information I’ve been looking for since I am planning to get into this ‘adventure’. So I have this question. I’ve been holding out to get one of the 2019 supposedly) diesel Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. But I’m now wondering, is the diesel going to be that much of an upgrade? Thanks!
great looking set up brad. Its fun to watch the progression of someone else’s gear as it makes me think i’m not so crazy after all haha! I really like that 67 designs mount system and need to get that in our Jeep. I agree that the iPad mini is a perfect set up and i also use Gaia GPS and it works fantastic!
Hey Brad just a thought that may help you with the decision of putting that slider in. The first time you almost roll, completely roll. Come across an obstacle that you have to hit because you either didn’t see it or came up to fast on it. That cooler is gonna smash around and break a window or hit a passenger or the cooler just gets destroyed. With the slider you wont have to strap and unstrap every time you need to open it. It will be in one place and will be one less thing to worry about in the event of a mishap. Hope this helps.
Amazing article and I’m a new subscriber. But I have to say, I love the dedication to safety. But I thought it was hilarious when you essentially went; “I have a seat belt cutter because my initial emergency tool for this purpose was not ideal. I potentially saved a life. But you can’t be too safe. I have a fire extinguisher. It’s not big enough…. ah well, $#&$ it. Now remember everyone Always be prepared with a first aid kit.” Absolutely hilarious to me. That being said. Well done article and despite the dig, I’m a new fan. Best if luck to you.
Brad, you put very cool articles on your site, I am hoping to get a Rubicon jeep here one day in the near future is my plan and dream. I also have a friend also who has one. If I am ever able to get one,. I would hope to go out with you and your friend Marko. I have only been on a couple of trails with a different friend.
A couple of questions that might have been asked already. First, why pay for data on the ipad mini when you can just hotspot off your phone that you’re already paying for and allow your mini to do the same thing as if it had a data connection? Second question, I have been debating the vector bar for a very long time, the problem is, I have an aftermarket double din radio which requires you to remove the middle screw that goes in the dash tray that the vector bar screws down with. My question is, do you think it would still be a solid bar with just the 2 outer points that are close to the windshield as the only mounting for the bar or would it just shake too much?
Great article Brad! Looking for some guidance from an experienced overland like yourself as my wife and I are looking to join the overland club. We are looking to start with our first trip this June 2019 giving us time to start our build. Our question is do you have a priority list or recommendations on what you would purchase first? We know you’re busy but appreciate any help.
Technically, you need a HAM license to use that Baofeng… It too can link to relay stations. We use them here in Fl. when out ridin’ I had to get a license…which like you stated…is really easy to get… Those Baofengs are great little radios… Love the lay out you got up front and great recommendations on items to have with you. You gave me some ideas to do for my YJ… Great Vid!!!
Hello love your vids! Very educational, informative and entertaining. I am a soon to be neophyte to the Jeep world. And I have an odd question, what do you think of the Grand Cherokee? I want to pick up a grand Cherokee toss a new engine and go from there with mods. What’s your honest opinion. Should I just get a wrangler? Thanks and keep up the awesome work🤙🏼 Carlos.
Ahhh …..accessories ! the life blood of dealerships and aftermarket. The need to have or the have the need of that is the question !? But like the saying goes, better to have and not need than to need and not have lol 😆 . Brad luv your set up in your rig ….It’s like the Swiss Army knife of jeeps ….so cool!
What would it take for a smaller YouTuber to join you on an adventure? I like that you are no nonsense and I am pretty sure I would like adventuring and camping with you and your boys. I have organized many meet up events in the past but since COVID I have not had many outings. I am in Canada in BC and I love long road trips. Currently I have a 2003 WJ but I am ready to pull the trigger on a loaded 2014 Sahara. BrbAdventurer look me up I have all the socials just looking to grow my website and make new Jeep friends.
Im poster girl for Jeep-:over four decades!, five Jeeps, That being said, I cant imagine going back to Jeep as “daily drive”! Tread Lightly! we only have one planet and a little intelligent use of our petroleum resources might “just” allow us to continue to have recreational use. Wise up and enjoy Jeeps for what theyre intended.- save a wee bit $$ on toys and spend it on a used commuter thats either an EV or at least hybrid-
Great article wondering if you know or have a cell phone holder you recommend for 16 JK, my wife would like one for Christmas. Or any other useful interior upgrades, we have Bestop freedom top for hard top and AMP steps both have been perfect for her. PS 4 jeep family 08JK, 16JK, 16JK, 17JK and every family has that one rebellious child (19 Subaru ) I know what is a parent to do 🙂 .
LOL…all those electronics could be solved with ONE device. Have you ditched the stock tune(to get back 25% the factory robs from you below 5k rpm) or installed a power adder? Because that pig has got to weigh the other side of 5k lbs. Also edited to ask…have you installed a bushing kit to recline the rear seat and/or the “plate” that makes the rear seat much more comfortable? I had the same issue and once that modification was installed, the rear seat is now the preference of passengers(even those taller individuals) when going topless.
Hi Brad … I just subscribed to your website. Can you please go over new equipment suggestions for HAM radios (handhelds & in car units and GPS models) for the jeep. I’m a noobie to all of this and have been trying to read up/watch articles for handhelds and can’t seem to find anything great. I was wondering if you could explain/suggest a handheld that would be VHF/UHF with 1500w capable (yes, 1500w) to not just use in jeep outings for fun, but also if the SHTF as well and could communicate to anyone in the world to gather info. Would this be possible for you to explain ? I did watch a article here somewhere saying that you have to get the same kind of radio as the group you are going out with otherwise you won’t be able to communicate … ??? is that true ? I don’t want a radio like someone else – I would like to think you could buy any brand, any model and still be able to communicate with all parties in your group. Thanks for your help on this.
I have a question about your ham radios. You explain why you have the handheld radio in addition to the hard-wired radio, which makes total sense (outside-the-vehicle portability comes in handy in many situations). But I’m curious, why have the hard-wired one at all if the handheld (saving precious weight and space) will do what you need?
How does the Wrangler compare to other off-road competitors? Toyota Tacoma TRD, Subaru’s, Honda Passport. I suppose nothing is more off-road capable but something else might be pretty good and better for all-around or towing use. Fire extinguisher? I did see the vid of this new Wrangler going up in flames. I wonder if a nitrogen cylinder is available instead of CO2?
One of the best add ons well Two is the windshield mounted handles great for getting in and out and rock solid.LOL.but another must is interior lights I chose a simple single LED mounted to the plastic covering on top of the windshield. One LED behind each sun visor, one wire run along the bar under the padding. Take off the freedom top run the wire to the center interior light behind you and pull one bulb out and attacth to the removed bulbs Positive connection. lights will come on stock when you open door, turn switch on on directional stock, or push light lens switch on over head light. The whole front of cab is now illuminated .and no wires were cut only three holes were drilled and all in plastic one for each LED and one to pass the positive wire into the over head light behind the lens.see my install pics on the JK-forum in the electrical and sound systems topic.Jim 73′ KB1PFL
Hey Brad… Great VLog again… I really always look forward to Your next one… Have bought things You have Recommended, and Tested ( I really Love My KC Lights)… I too do some of the things You recommend… One, try and Never Wheel alone… When doing so I always Wheel with the Guy (Like You) that has all the things needed for Safe Off Roading… Really Helps keep the Costs down! 😆
Hello, I am new subbie, thank your for website. I have 2014JK 4dr, You mentioned this is your daily driver. I was curious what your mileage is now since initial purchasing it. You also mentioned you drive with 37’s, did you have to change the ratio? I am still running stock, but now I am ready to mod my jeep. Funny thing is, everywhere I go, I tend to see people laughing, I assume it’s because my small tires, but I didn’t want simply buy anything until I knew, it was right.. Not to be winded, I also had to ask about the poison fenders you have; in which I like, do you worry about people hitting or bending them. I had to ask, because I am making my checklist. Thank You again for website and service!
Not to hate on anything you do but if you want a knife that’s actually a tool you need to carry a fixed blade knife. I have a 20 dollar hultafors and that sucker is a mini prybar, fire starter, screw driver, club, cleaning debri out of excavator buckets to replace teeth on the fly and basicallywhateveryou can imagine. … damn near 1/4″ thick and you can sharpen any deformations out of it easily lol a folding knife just creates a weak link in your support system. A folding knife is only a cutting edge. You can get a nice molle / kydex sheath and attach it right to your seat back
So I have a question concerning all the 12 volt drain. Do you run a dual battery system and high output alternator? With all the 12 volt goodies we install on our toys it would seem that a single battery would not keep up. I am wanting to install the Dual battery set up on My wife’s new Gladiator and eliminate the baby battery as well in the process.
Great article, Brad! You know, talking about interiors, have you ever done a article addressing the dreaded Jeep leaks? I looked thru your list of articles (I didn’t know there were that many) but didn’t see anything that would refer to that. I have them; hell, most of us have had them at one point or another. I would like to hear what you and other Jeep owners have done and what has worked for them. So, if you could, please in the future, address this issue, even if you have never had them. It’ll get people talking about it. Thanks, keep ’em coming.
Hi Brad, just joined you website. Although I am a green blooded Land Rover man I think your Jeep addiction is great. I too am evolving my vehicle. Had it 15 years now & still changing stuff as I move forward. Ypu have some amazing kit available in the US. I am trying to a Power Tank over here in England. I also have the Rhino Rack roof rack, nice piece of kit. Looking forward to more footage . Regards Nick aka Non Stick Nick
Nice set-up you have there! After 13 years with my TJ, I’m still taking stuff out and putting other stuff in! I moved my HAM head unit to where you have your spod module. It’s easier for me to glance up at the frequency and other info on the display, as opposed to at the lower part of the center-dash area. I also just re-installed a rear mini-trunk enclosure that secures to the interior across the rear wheel wells, and against the tailgate. I removed it about ten years ago and now I need it again. lol
Enjoyed this article and your take on how to set up an interior for efficiency and comfort. I’ve been struggling with setting up a toolkit. I wonder if you could make a article going through your toolkit and help us newbies out in setting up ours so when we go out on the trail we don’t find out the hard way that we should’ve brought a breaker bar! Thanks for all your tips, love your website!
Ok, I am going to put it out there: Real question NO BS!! How reliable a rubicon is? not how capable ( i know it is), but is the question i always ask. I say no BS because i know my question can be interpreted as such, but i really want to know. I own a 5th gen 4runner trail, capable and reliable, love it! But the rubicon is another vehicle i would love to own, and i owned Jeep before (Grand cherokee) and it was not a good experience at all, actually it was thr reason i moved to Toyota.
You Muricans are lucky. Apparently the HAM license test in the US is easy. It’s stupid hard and complicated in Canada. You practically need a PHD in radio science. Way too much hassle just to talk to another rig on the trail, IMHO. Also, GMRS sucks in Canada – limited to 2 watts, crappy handhelds only. No separate antennas allowed.
I Love your rig. I have an 07 Wrangler. recently had a new hard top installed on it. Can you give any suggestions on where to mount a Ham radio antenna on the jeep? From what ive read, the antenna should be mounted on metal. I have been just sticking a mag mount on the front hood but the antenna then gets in the way of my front view. Id also like to know what year jeep you have. Mine has an electronic accelerator which means if the battery goes dead the jeep will not run on the alternator and it cant be jump(p started or pushed started. I didn’t find out all this until after I bought the jeep. Im old school,. I used to push start cars back in the day but with this electronic set up if your battery dies your screwed. Id also like to know how you power all that equipment? do you have more than one battery under the hood? Any way . Thanks for the vid. Loved it. JK
On your iPad mini do you have an external GPS antenna? How much faster is the power tank than the twin ARB for your 37’s? I saw that you built a 4 tire air kit, but you aren’t carrying it any more? Can you provide any more info on why you use your ham radio more than CB? I thought most people on the trails have cbs? New to jeeping and getting rubicon soon, so your articles have been great!!
I like all of your articles and detailed explanations of why you do or do not like or use things. Can you please do a article about different GPS apps you do like? I almost bought a TRX7 based on your initial review, now I am leaning more towards an ipad, but like you said, there is leadnav, gaia, motion x, mob armor, all trails, etc. Thanks! My dad watches a ton too!
Just pick up my powertank after perusal your article on it. Have you had any problems with leaving it in the jeep when it’s hot out. Not 100% sure if I want to leave it in there year round I live in Illinois so our summer is not as hot as yours. Just don’t want the tank to set of the pressure relief off if it gets to hot what do you do with the tank when it’s hot
Brad a question about the tailgater table. Did you do anything on the passenger side of the tailgate to hide all of the OEM wiring? It looks to me that once you remove the plastic cover on the inside of the tailgate to install the table you’re left with wires still showing as the table assembly does not fully extended across the tail gate. It’s the only thing that’s stopping me from buying this. It just looks unfinished in my eyes.
So Brad, you are paying a monthly subscription for your spot x and cellular on your iPad. Did you consider, using your cell phone to tether the iPad? I just hate the idea of adding to my monthly nut already. Know what I mean? I have read with the Gaia GPS you can download Maps at home of your upcoming trip, save them and then use them off-line. A little more planning ahead of time of course. Your thoughts?
