What is the 70-20-10 rule in decorating?

The 70/20/10 rule is a design strategy that involves using one neutral color for 70% of a room’s décor, followed by a rich color for 20%, and a bold color for 10%. This creates a well-rounded design scheme. For example, in a bathroom, Carrara quartz walls line the shower and vanity, while neutral gray walls serve as the 70 backdrop. Dark Italian Walnut cabinets and mirror frame represent the 20 color, while brightly colored hand towels and coordinating artwork tie the room together.

Incorporating black in a retro-themed kitchen enhances the other colors, while custom floral mosaic tile wallpaper and white shaker-style cabinetry add a dramatic look while maintaining a classic and interesting look.

How can I design my home by myself?

To get inspired for interior design, browse magazines, online resources, and visit model homes or real homes for sale. Create a Pinterest board or physical inspiration board to keep ideas in one place. Consider your lifestyle and budget when choosing colors, materials, and finishes. For example, choose durable, easy-to-clean materials for floors and finishings if you have young children. Your design style will determine some choices, such as using sleek, minimalist finishes and materials like stainless steel and glass for a contemporary home. Consider the overall flow of the house and how colors, materials, and finishes work together to create a cohesive design.

What is the 60 30 10 decorating rule?

What is the 60 30 10 decorating rule?

The 60-30-10 Rule is a decorating rule that helps you choose the best color scheme for your home. It suggests covering your room with 60 of a dominant color, 30 of a secondary color, and 10 of an accent shade. The rule aims to maintain a perfect balance of tones by choosing colors that mingle well with each other to create a subtle combo.

The dominant color should be applied to the most visible objects in the room, such as the walls and primary objects like a couch or bed. The secondary color should be chosen for its supporting role in the space, such as linens, curtains, area rugs, side chairs, and cushion sets.

When choosing the secondary color, ensure it blends well with the dominant color to create a blended look. The 60-30-10 Rule encourages choosing colors that will flow together and work in harmony, rather than taking over the entire color palette.

How to create a vintage home decor?

How to create a vintage home decor?

Incorporating vintage textiles into interior spaces can add dimensional texture and vintage charm. Retro grain sacks and tea towels can be used as pillowcases, while antique quilts can be used as wall hangings. Framing vintage scarves for instant artwork or using thrifted curtains or blankets for a time-honed headboard can also be a creative way to incorporate vintage items without dating the home.

Brighten neutral spaces with colorful vintage decor, such as a rustic table and mismatched seating in a dining area. A colorful retro blanket balances bold red artwork and an antique dough bowl filled with fresh fruit. Each vintage accessory adds color to the room while complementing the warmth of the time-worn wood furniture.

Outfitting a vintage-inspired space with antique decor can be achieved through modern design, such as a sleek black-and-white bathroom with painted white walls, glossy black beaded board, hexagonal tile flooring, claw-foot tub, and refurbished dresser. The reimagined retro elements are paired with actual vintage decor, such as antique wall art and rustic wood shelves, adding dimension and warmth to the space.

  • Hiiiii! Omgggggggg thank ve been wanting that tv forever but not in the budget. I do the YouTube hack to leave the photo on. My hack while not having it. Omg omg ! Fingers crossed it’s me. Hehehe actually the smart tv is in my business board. Lol! Goal is to make my new home feel homey. Love your content thank you again.

  • I was perusal some of your old article’s . You are so talented and that’s why when you moved into your beautiful new home, I couldn’t wait to see what you would do. that I with you. When you were making your record cabinet you weren’t wearing your safety glasses. Shame on you Mr. 😊😊😊 Thank you for sharing with us! ❤

  • I really love your style. I live in Sweden and wish I could live in the states so I could find the same beautiful things that you show in your articles. I’m moving to a another rental that finally is big enough for me to bring friends over for dinner and get a bigger bed 🎉 also it also has a balcony inside the apartment, almost like an extra room and my goal is to style it Lone fox style 😍 also add lots of 🌱 do you have any advice where I (even though I live in Sweden) could find nice pieces (pillows, vases, paintings especially) ? Finally, you really rock! I introduced you articles to my boyfriend and he looooves you taste and advice as well. Keep up the good work, we love what you do and the beauty you bring to the table ❤️

  • How safe is to have blanket you spray painted 🤔 and to put it all over your body. Also, why, why do you say it is not sponsored, I genuinly love it? So that would mean that all sponsored things you don’t really like? I just can’t belive that you would even say that. Just don’t say anything, this way it seems so dishonest, and personaly for me, after hearing that ‘not sponsored, I genuinly love it’ I would think a few times before even considering product you advertise, bc obviously you don’t really like it 😄 people would do anything for money, I get that, but than at least don’t say anything😁

  • I am so glad you started the year with projects since that gets me inspired to create special moments for my home. I have loved in the past your revamp of furniture. I like the idea to repurposing items vs a simple toss. I like to say you are an inspiration to young people since you are driven and as you mentioned today a home owner at 27! Thank you for your generosity of spirit! You shine bright ❤ and light us all up. Best wishes this 2023 (@brolz01)

  • My bedroom has always been neglected the last two years. I have 3 pieces of vintage furniture that my dad gave me but I haven’t picked from his home yet; a dresser, an entryway console and a cabinet, that I would love to refurbish. Vintage furniture has a way of bringing some rich vybes and I want that. So my plan for 2023 work up the courage to work on my furniture pieces (have watched sooo many articles on refurbishing furniture) and bring to life my retro style first, then slowly add some decor elements in my tiny home.

  • WOW. I don’t even know where to begin! There are too many things about this article that I love! Keep the butterflies, so gorgeous. The birdcage with the books inside was stunning. The paper machete bowl was so pretty. All the lamps were amazing. Keep the birds gold, otherwise you wouldn’t notice them and noticing is what you want! I’d love another article like this with more unexpected decor ideas. Thank you for sharing.

  • I don’t want a cookie cutter home. I’ve always enjoyed having unique pieces for my home. I love your ideas. I have a worn out, weather beaten fence piece. I painted it like a flag. Well, a very worn flag. It’s unique and I love it. It’s big enough for 3 stripes and I have the perfect place for it. Unique pieces have your thoughts in them and a story. I can remember my mom telling us where she bought things from at a yard sale. It’s funny because now I find myself saying the same stuff. We are all so different and I want my home to reflect my personality. I really enjoy what you do for your home and your inspiration. ❤

  • I love the shelf you made out of architectural salvage. I always look on eBay at the pieces they have. I actually have some transom like windows in my living room, laundry room and the master bathroom. I love the window you hung up. But it looked way bigger than the ones in my house, They’re just to let light in. I’m not a fan of the butterflies. I used to love them. But since moving to the country they kind of scare me. I walk out my back door and they fly right at me. So,they spook me quite often. I bought a record player for my husband. It’s bright red. I have it in a cabinet in my living room. I just bought a big low basket that may work to kind of hide it. As long as the basket fits in the cabinet. Thanks for giving me a great idea. I would love to see another article. You have such great ideas.

  • I loved your idea with the head vase! You could have even stopped at the moss and it would have looked great too! I have a head vase that I wanted to be different than everyone else and I put some beans in mine (didn’t have foam), topped them with moss and then stuck a bunch of pheasant feathers in it. 😁 Quite the “hairdo”. 😉

  • I love EVERY single idea! Personally I think adding some random streaks of gold to the green light fixture itself, or even some antiquing color would make it blend better with your gorgeous vintage items. My favs were the butterfly head & the cage filled with books. I so love all your articles! Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us!

  • Yes I like the butterflies on the head better than the plant. Unexpected. And the birds should stay gold as it’s unexpected. Yes more unexpected styled articles. I think it goes along with a collected home. In my 20’s I had a coffee table made from a 5 panel door. But it’s taken me many years to get unexpected things in my decor. I just bought a very large H made from iron that was probably on a house. It’s chippy peely. It’s on my kitchen wall soon to be in my living room wall. I have a large colorful map of Iowa on my living room wall. Finally at 69 years old I want to decorate with more unexpected things. I’m having floating shelves built next to my fireplace to show off some of my collected finds. Keep em coming! The total eclipse in Dallas was amazing!

  • My daughter sculpted a classmate’s head in Terra Cotta clay. She gave me permission to paint it. Thanks for the idea, but I will go for a marble look with ivory and dark wax. I love the uniqueness of the butterflies in yours. I will tuck one into the hair of my sculpture after I paint it. (Terra Cotta is not a color in my decor, so I want to paint it.) I also brought my foyer light (lantern style like yoir back hallway) from my last house and filled it with a floral arrangement, adding seasonal touches on skewers. It is on my entry table.

  • Hi Sherry, Great unexpected re-dos and yes I would love to see another article such as this. Before I forget, I love the green on the lantern but I would not paint the birds green. I love the gold with the green and if you wanted to paint them, how about a black. I have been in search of. Small stool and tonight is put out your trash night. Driving home from dinner out (too tired to cook after work tonight) I did a turn as I saw 2 round tables and one stool. From the road they looked great but up close they were in horrible shape. I am renting a small historical registered apartment without a community area to work on furniture. We are not allowed to wash our cars either such as other apartments have a place to do that. My place is so very tiny inside and no more room in storage. The round tables had a decent blue tile I loved and their metal legs needed a good sanding but I haven’t a place to put them redone or not. I am hoping to buy a small house this summer with a nice shed. I am going to start looking in May. Your table leg turned shelf is wonderful. My brother and I learned how to play the piano on a baby grand my father refinished from an old church. My Mom moved it to each house and after years of keeping it and wanting to down size she put it up for sale. No one wanted to buy it or even take it for free. My Mom ended up calling a salvage company but as a surprise for Christmas she gave each of us kids one leg and each had a wheel on it. I used mine in my apartment in various ways but my siblings didn’t want their’s.

  • Hello, and thank you once again 🤗💕 so much fun! I was crafting today. I have a friend with a small thrift shop. Sometimes items don’t sell well, I have the opportunity to remake them. Do you have ideas for the glass globes for candle sconces? There are so many and people in our area don’t want them. I looked on Pinterest today. I thought maybe you could do a article on remaking 80s and 90s home decor? If you’re looking for ideas😉

  • Second comment from me.. I knew you would fit in a clock, and was so surprised to see you use the lantern what a great idea. I love to see you using I.O.D transfers they are so pretty, but sadly find they are a tat more than my budget can stretch to. I would love to see your next lot of ideas . I’m on board for anything you show us. Xx

  • OMGoodness, Sherry! You always amaze!!! Keep them coming, I say! I’ve been experimenting creating shadow boxes that display different types of moss found in my neighborhood (I live in the PNW and am surrounded by trees!); so it would only stand to reason that my two favorites were the driftwood and succulent and 3-D frame/shelf pieces! 😊

  • Sherry, how do we choose just one of your many projects? Firstly I would leave the birds cold I feel they would become invisible if you painted them green and I like the gold against the green. I also adore the concrete head with the butterflies. You’re a twig from the garden with artificial flowers leaves and in a section of the flowers is so unusual, but beautiful and the driftwood piece. I could go on, but just to say I so enjoy your articles when they come out. Thank you.

  • Yes! Would love to see more. I leave the gold birds on for a while. Eventually in time you’ll change them. Your chandeliers I loved. It’s definitely an unexpected lighting. You inspire me so much. I think I’m gonna find an old frame n do a shelf or better yet a basket. Love, love, love your great DIY makeovers. ♥️♥️😊👍👍🌟🌟

  • Thanks for another great article! Yes of course I would love to see more of these thrifted remakes. Love the decopauge bowl and everything else. I have lots of lanterns, birdcages and some ceiling lamps that I purchased for cheap. I have a chandelier (from Craig’s list) which I had professionally installed because I needed an electrical line set up. I asked the electrician to rewire (wrong term?) the chandelier to make it longer and he said he couldn’t do that for risk of damaging the vintage lamp. He didn’t offer to add extensions (perhaps not available 7 yrs. ago? ). Brilliant! I am looking to do more electrical work and I will ask about that! Keep em coming!

  • As usual, you never disappoint with your vision and talent! You could leave the birds gold, or possibly use you “antiquing” skills and give them that aged metal patina with the green paint. That way you could have it both ways- green with the the gold peeking through. I’m glad we don’t have a test at the end where we have to choose a favorite, because I’d be in a tight spot, lol. So much to love in this article =D

  • I am so inspired by your creative remaking/rebuilding projects so please add my vote to give us another round of ideas. My favorite today was the butterfly-crowned head because I loved the contrast between the conforming, stoic facial expression and the way the butterflies represent a creative freedom of thought. Well done!!

  • I really love the branch you helped come into bloom, and the way you styled it in such a graceful arch. In answer to your question about the green pendant with birds: Since the “eucalyptus” green already reminds me of verdigris, I would love to see it highlighted in copper and the birds painted in copper.

  • I would love to see your ideas for a vintage theme wedding. I am getting married this year and I have a lot of antique/vintage items, but putting them together for the wedding has been overwhelming for me. Any ideas and suggestions would be great if you have the time. Thank you for all of your articles. ❤

  • First of all, I loved this article! Please give us more like this one. Secondly, the two chandeliers in your kitchen are absolutely stunning. What a great idea and what a great transformation. Last but not least, I love the green lantern with the gold birds. In my opinion, I think gold birds should be left that color, in order to stand out.❤

  • Sherry, I forgot to say I like your use of an old wooden door🚪as a countertop for your washer and dryer – very clever‼️😉 Also meant to tell you your driftwood sculpture on the candle spike with air plants, moss and greenery sprigs was the most unexpected and creative project of your whole article, and I L💚VED IT SO MUCH❣️🌿🍃

  • Love the glass shade in the gold stand. You and I think alike because I would have done the same. The head with the butterflies looks great too but I would have added butterflies and some roses and peonies. Just my preference. I always think those two go great together. I would leave those birds as they are. The green and the gold in the lighting fixture look great together.

  • Loved all your ideas. I am in the midst of redecorating. When i sold my home and moved to a condo five years ago, i thought i should decorate with more contemporary decor. No no no. I am now going back to the cottage style i always loved. Good thing i had kept some furniture pieces. Sold the others on marketplace. It is soooo much cozier and you have inspired me to decorate with what i love not what i thought other people would like.

  • Sherry, you’ve done it again! So many wonderful ideas and doable projects that we can try. The gold birds are definitely a standout and I loved the various chandeliers and light fixtures turned lanterns and display pieces. I like the butterflies but would do a few less so some of the moss would show. Yes, please, give us more of your amazing ideas! Your brain must be nonstop thinking of gorgeous and unique ideas. I am always surprised at how many things you come up with that are uniquely you! Your articles are my weekly treat!

  • Oh yes by all means Sherry do another article like this one! You are truly one of a kind and I am always amazed at what you come up with and I really loved these ideas. I love the butterflies in the head, love the green light you hung and I have got to use your ideas of hanging things inside a frame, loved those. You are truly one of a kind and I always eagerly await an upload from you!

  • 1st thing Sherry, “Do Touch the Birds, Please.” So now; Oh my Sherry, your imagination and application to all your makeovers makes me wish I could be so creative. I was behind the door when God handed out these traits. I Love EVERYTHING. I have to stop the article to allow myself more time to take in each beautiful creation. ❤ from this Aussie.

  • Sherry, I am glad to see you creating more projects with sticks from your yard with attached faux blossoms 🌸 and leaves 🍃 for a natural look. We discussed this last year, the first time you created Spring branches, and I told you I had been doing the same thing for 25 to 30 years. Even now, you are STILL the ONLY PERSON I have seen create this kind of beautiful decor using this technique, other than me, LOL❣️😆 Keep being UNIQUE, Sherry. 😊💜🍃💕

  • Hello Queen of Unique Creations!!! I adore all the DIYS and ways to use them. Yes, I’d be interested in seeing another article like this. Question… How does the AG1 taste. I noticed you didn’t mention that. I’ve ordered many powders for gut and overall health. Every single one taste so horrible I could not stomach them. Please let me know. Thanks for all you do for us. 😊

  • I love the butterflies! They look like a beautiful hat on her…great idea! Oh, those chandeliers….just beautiful! I kind of like the gold birds on the green…unexpected! Lol! Yes, more articles like this one, please!! Love your ideas…always! Thank you so much for sharing your talent with all of us!♥♥

  • Good morning Sherry. I have always loved your design aesthetic. I also decorate with bird cages and lanterns. Speaking of which, that hanging lantern with the birds – OMG! Brilliant. The decorated head was lovely. I do love the butterflies, however, for those who don’t, a simple plant would work well too. That decoupage bowl is priceless.
