The last two years I’ve poured my blood sweat and tears into remodeling this whole home almost entirely myself. This is the first …

Which renovation should I do first?

The kitchen is a crucial area for home remodeling, as it serves as the heart of the home, where family and friends gather for cooking, eating, and socializing. A well-renovated kitchen can significantly increase a home’s value and appeal to potential buyers. Renovations can range from simple updates like painting cabinets and replacing countertops to more extensive ones like rearranging the layout or installing new appliances.

Regardless of the extent, updating the kitchen can create a more functional and enjoyable space for cooking and entertaining. The bathroom, whether a master suite, guest bathroom, or powder room, should provide comfort and functionality.

How do I design my renovation?

In order to create a three-dimensional model of one’s desired home renovation, it is necessary to follow a series of steps. 1) Measure the room or project area, 2) Select appropriate software, 3) Develop a floor plan, 4) Incorporate interior furnishings, and 5) Evaluate and disseminate the model in three-dimensional format.

What renovations can I do myself?

Before tackling a house renovation, it’s crucial to be realistic about your skill and experience levels. Small tasks like painting and tiling can be done by a DIY novice, saving money. However, larger projects require honesty about your comfort level, tools, and knowledge of the process. Even simple tasks like demolition can be complex, and it’s essential to ensure you won’t damage structural walls or electrical wiring.

For a home renovation project to be effective, every detail must be right, from design to finish. Substandard work can damage the property’s value if sold, so it’s essential to determine if you can complete the work to a high standard. If you feel comfortable with some tasks, you can save money by attempting them yourself. However, if you’re not confident, it’s best to leave the job to professionals.

In summary, it’s essential to be realistic about your skill and experience before tackling a house renovation project.

How can I upgrade my house cheaply?

To update your house on a budget, consider painting walls, cabinets, or baseboards to give your space a new look. Painting cabinets can be a cost-effective way to transform your space without replacing them, as they can be replaced more easily. Baseboards, which can be in reasonable condition, can be sanded down and given a new coat of paint. Painting your front door can add curb appeal, and many paint stores offer deals to save even more on paint.

Add new hardware to your cabinetry, such as knobs, pulls, and doors knobs, to give a room a different vibe. Replacing old cabinet pulls and knobs can be a small upgrade that can come in under $100. Spray paint or other inexpensive paint can also be used to create a more budget-friendly look.

What should I renovate first in my old house?

The process of restoring an old house involves six steps: assessing and repairing the foundation, starting demolition, inspecting electric and plumbing, redoing the walls and floors, replacing old appliances, and refurbishing fixtures and ornamentation. Before making major commitments, it is crucial to have a remodeling plan. During the walkthrough, identify major issues such as leaky roofs, cracks in the foundation, drafty windows, and sticking doors.

Structural fixes and roofing repairs are crucial, so allocate enough budget for them. Ensure the property is suitable for your needs, such as having enough square footage for family members. As you walk through the house, consider what you want to change and how the space can better fit your needs. Utilize modeling software or floorplan drawing to visualize your renovation goals and select materials and colors.

How do I decide what to renovate first?

Oren Farkash, CEO of South Land Remodeling, suggests dividing a project into sections based on your comfort level with living alongside renovations. He suggests starting with repairs in your first-priority room and moving onto cosmetic changes after completion. Starting with the kitchen is usually the highest priority for most homeowners, as it ensures that the most important area is completed if resources are limited. This personal approach can make the process more enjoyable.

Tom Nolan, a home improvement expert and founder of AllStar Home, also recommends starting with the kitchen as it is one of the best places to start when redoing a home. Kitchen renovations can be more involved and take longer than other rooms, so starting with the kitchen can help quickly return to normalcy.

  • I found you at the beginning of this remodel and I am even more impressed now than when I started perusal this journey. You are so talented with a really great design eye. I agree 100% that DIY takes courage and you clearly have that in spades. I can’t wait to see what you tackle next and thanks for inspiring us with your “DIY guts”!

  • So proud of you. I’ve learned so much from you. Your inspiration is immeasurable. “Courage over confidence”, you should copyright protect that motto! Seriously. I can see how courage over confidence can help get a person unstuck. A lack of confidence, (stemming from a lack of knowledge/experience) can be paralyzing. Seizing courage and Doing in spite of apprehension, opens one up to learn, succeed, and gain confidence. Then repeat. Your kids and husband are so blessed to have you. This concept is more than DIY, it’s life skills.

  • This is so inspiring, and you should be SO proud! “When I don’t know how to do something I research and teach myself”. YES GIRL! You have given me the confidence to pursue more home projects. My husband and I will be buying a house soon, and I was worried about my abilities to tackle home DIIY renovations, but you have showed me how possible it is with the right work ethic and courage. You’re amazing, and the house turned out BEAUTIFULLY!

  • You are one amazing and talented young lady and very strong and determined. Your ability to go though so many challenges and over come them really paid off very well. Your own artwork is really a very nice extra touch. I am sure the previous owners would be shocked (in a good way) if they saw what you did.

  • Congratulations that all your hard work paid off. Just please be careful when taking on certain tasks without experience. I’ve seen too many DIY’ers try taking out walls without understanding if something is load bearing for example. And be careful what “advice” you follow from YT. Not everyone making articles are actual contractors and I’ve seen just as much bad advice as I’ve seen good.

  • Woman, damn! I’m almost speechless with what you have done…and self taught by youtube articles? Wow, amazing! I really love what you did and youtube for being such a great source of knowledge and inspiration…you want to learn how to do something? There’s always someone who teaches it on youtube! I just started to do things around the house instead of asking people to come do it, not do it that well and asking huge amounts for it…but never thought I could reach your level…maybe one day I can 🙂 thank you for sharing!

  • You’re soooo talented!! You did an amazing job it all looks absolutely beautiful 😍 it’s hard to pick one room but I guess I will go with the living room as being my favorite ❤️ I love how you used the old doors and trim as well!! You are blessed with many gifts, God bless and keep up the awesome work!! 🥰❤️

  • I stumbled upon reno article and was amazed by what I saw. Your dedication to renovating their entire home by themselves over two years is truly inspiring. From transforming the kitchen to revamping the bathrooms, it’s incredible to witness the before-and-after transformations and pick up some DIY tips along the way.

  • Great vision and tenacity! Loved the recycling of trim and kitchen cabinets!! My favorites are the wood wrap accent in the bedroom, your awesome range hood, quality bathroom renovation, and your stunning office ceiling design and fabrication!!! I would love to walk your project, just to see your attention to detail on your painting alone. I can imagine that it’s nearly perfect. I always strive for perfection in construction, but we are the only ones that can actually show others that Oops 😊

  • We bought a Bilevel lake house six months ago. It’s outdated, foundation leaks, things done that should.of NEVER been done the way they were,a huge dumpster and more to go..BUT once we’re all done I’m 100 steps from the water and have a 2,200 sq ft home. Most the homes here are 400 sq ft. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder right? LOL

  • This was a nice overview article. I watched each room transformation when they were posted. I was wondering where you’ve been and glad you’ll be back. You have wonderful ideas and design tips!!! The kitchen was my favorite, but they were all good. Question – I can’t find the article you mentioned, about what will become of the Lake House and upcoming projects? Thank you.
