What are traditions for decorating Christmas trees?

The Christmas tree, originating in Central Europe, was traditionally decorated with colored paper roses, apples, wafers, tinsel, and sweetmeats. Moravian Christians began to illuminate Christmas trees with candles, which were later replaced by Christmas lights after electrification. Today, there are a variety of traditional and modern ornaments, including garlands, baubles, tinsel, and candy canes. An angel or star may be placed at the top to represent the Angel Gabriel or the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity.

Edible items like gingerbread, chocolate, and other sweets are also popular and tied to or hung from the tree’s branches with ribbons. The Christmas tree has been historically regarded as a custom of the Lutheran Churches, and only in 1982 did the Catholic Church erect the Vatican Christmas Tree. In the Western Christian tradition, Christmas trees are erected on various days, including the first day of Advent or as late as Christmas Eve, depending on the country.

It is considered unlucky to remove Christmas decorations before Twelfth Night and is considered appropriate to do so on Candlemas. The Christmas tree is sometimes compared to the Yule tree, especially in discussions of its folkloric origins.

To decorate a Christmas tree professionally, view it in sections: top, middle, and bottom, and style each section starting from the top. For a balanced look, segment the tree into quadrants. Start with classic ornaments in a classic color scheme like silver, gold, white, red, and green, which mix and match with other decorations to create a different theme each year. Combining large and small ornaments for depth is recommended, with experts starting with larger ones and tucking them deeper within the foliage for a beautiful, layered look.

  • Hi Emily. There was no way I was going to miss part 2. Even though I am soaking up as much as I can of Fall and my cozy fall decor, I am over the moon happy to see everything that Walmart has and O Boy, do they have amazing decor!! 😀The prices are Fantastic!! I really have to make a list now because there is just too much that I want!! 😮 Ohhhh….thank you Emily for a fun shop with me!!! 🤗

  • Emily you are so sweet. Thank you for all your hard work and helping us to see what is out in the stores and on line. I bought the Texas garland and yes it’s beautiful. I like the wreath with the wicker bells and the unique bells . Again thank you and i look forward to the next article. God bless! Marion

  • I went to one of my favorite Walmarts on Saturday to see if any Christmas things was out and it was. Not a lot, they are still setting up. They had a 6ft real touch garland for only $27.88. I may purchase2 and replace my old pine ones. I already have one I probably thrifted from somewhere. I am very excited! I love celebrating my Lord!

  • WOW! Walmart has really got some beautiful items this year. Very high end looking. I am going to have a hard time deciding which items I DON’T need! LOL! I really love those gold bells you hauled yourself and that garland and wreath. I swear I could smell the pine! Hahahahaha! Lookin forward to your decorating article’s too!

  • Hey Emiley… gurl, I had Sussed out and most of this decor already and received it too, it’s so good. I’m doing a couple green trees but I usually add some flocked picks and sprays in it. I am putting 1 flocked and actually a white in my bedroom this year! Ok I’m sorry I think this is gonna be long but I don’t have anyone to talk about my decor habit with.. lol. Ok the MTH cedar garland is so much better than the Norfolk! (I have at least 6 of them between 2 afloral and Kirklands). I have the 6ft HL cedar from last year but pieces do come off of it pretty easily. I have a few of the Walmart ones, the mixed greenery and a $27 one, I think that’s cedar from last year, but it’s only 6ft too. Plus I have a bunch of Michaels skinner greenery garlands. I’m tryingto be done with garland forever, I mean wth do I think I’m decorating? I also got 2 of the MTH Mercury garlands, 4 of the led gold leaf ones but I’m returning 2, because I found some white berry led ones on Amazon I want too. I also have 2 gold bell ones from HL and from 2 from Michael’s. A couple Dark and light wood beaded ones and now I think I’m gonna have to get that dang star one Emiley! I love stars, bells, trees, and deer for Christmas. Not really a Santa or Snowman girl but they’re cute. Oh and the nutcrackers.. how could I forget, I have black ones, gold ones, a faux stone one, a real marble one and several wood ones that I think I’m going to diy with the spray shellac and then spray with metallic gold, it really looks like antique brass.
