What is the 60 30 20 rule in decorating?
The 60-30-10 Rule is a decorating rule that helps you choose the best color scheme for your home. It suggests covering your room with 60 of a dominant color, 30 of a secondary color, and 10 of an accent shade. The rule aims to maintain a perfect balance of tones by choosing colors that mingle well with each other to create a subtle combo.
The dominant color should be applied to the most visible objects in the room, such as the walls and primary objects like a couch or bed. The secondary color should be chosen for its supporting role in the space, such as linens, curtains, area rugs, side chairs, and cushion sets.
When choosing the secondary color, ensure it blends well with the dominant color to create a blended look. The 60-30-10 Rule encourages choosing colors that will flow together and work in harmony, rather than taking over the entire color palette.

What’s a good budget for interior decorating?
The cost of a home renovation or furnishings depends on the overall value of the home. A general rule of thumb is to allocate 7-10% of the home’s value for interior design expenses, with a focus on “Mid-Range” products. For “Designer” level finishes, budget around 25% of the home’s overall value. For example, for a $2 million home, a budget of $500, 000+ would be appropriate for decorating and designing the entire house at the “Designer” level.
However, it’s important to note that these prices do not include home renovation expenses, such as construction. Clients often add features or upgrade finishes as the design process progresses, increasing the scope and cost of the budget. To avoid unexpected overages or disappointed expectations, clients should add about 20 to their initial budget estimate. This will leave wiggle room for upgrades and allow for more accurate financial expectations.
Interior designers are professionals who can save homeowners money by providing a professional touch to their home design projects. For example, if a client budgets $500, 000 and adds 20, they’ll end up with an estimated budget of $600K, leaving plenty of room for any changes or upgrades.
Why is home decor so expensive?
Heritage brands often have a strong reputation and a legacy of manufacturing skills, making high-end home décor more valuable. Early vintage pieces from these brands are worth more due to their quality and craftsmanship. However, vintage or antique furniture doesn’t necessarily have to be designed by a prominent brand. The quality of materials used in these pieces is a significant factor in their price and popularity.
In the past, solid wood and chemically untreated fabrics were the pinnacles of luxury furniture, but today, these materials are less common due to their higher cost. The cost of inferior materials is also higher, as they can be fabricated into similar-looking pieces at a fraction of the cost, but they won’t last as long or be as comfortable.

How much money do people spend on home decor?
The average annual expenditure on household furnishings and equipment per consumer unit in the United States from 2007 to 2022 was approximately $2. 6 thousand per unit. A consumer unit can be defined as all members of a household related by blood, marriage, adoption, or other legal arrangements, a person living alone or sharing a household with others, or two or more persons living together who use their incomes to make joint expenditure decisions.

8 BUDGET FRIENDLY DECORATING TIPS | AFFORDABLE HOME DECOR Designer: Kristen McGowan Are you wondering How …
I 💜 the idea as is section…. It’s the first place I go to when in store. I’ve got heaps of brand new still boxed items in the section because it’s last seasons etc, but what’s even better is buying ex display stuff, not only do I not have to worry about putting it together I know it’s been put together correctly!!
I am always trolling the return paint. I always look for the palest shades when I’m thinking of going a bit darker. But sometimes someone’s ‘mistake’ is just what you didn’t know you NEEDED! 😆 Since I’m not into matchy, matchy, as long as the tone is complimentary, it turns out well. A very common score for me is, 5 gal of scrubbable wall paint for about $35! 1 gal is usually between $5-$10. That’s usually more than 50% off. It’s a win-win. I repainted my entire house for about $100; that’s 9 rooms including trim & moldings. Yes, I trolled for a few months, but big paint jobs are usually planned, so it’s not a huge deal. Or you’re like me and your deco addict/nerd and just obsessed with collecting deco stuff for in the future projects.
Love thrifting!! About 90% of my decorations are from thrift stores. Things like frames, candle holders, pictures, lamps, large woven baskets I use to store lap blankets when not in use. I love gold, bronze and copper colors and found a beautiful bronze color metal umbrella stand the other day for 5$ the only thing is you have to have patience! I’d love to go to a store and get all my decor at once but when you thrift it takes time to get it all
I love the ikea as is section, I almost always luck out and replace at least one item I already had in my cart and save at least 30%. A lot of the items are simply returns and aren’t even damaged. Also, if you get something already built, you can take it to the returns and they can give you tools to disassemble parts of it to make it fit in your car. There’s even a raised area to do it covered in carpet to not damage your item. I did this with the surfbowrd Stockholm coffee table and was so worth it the extra few minutes disassembling the legs to fit it in the car.
if you turn your book covers inside out and have any nerdy bookworm friends… they’re all going to think you’re exceptionally weird. Worse than people who buy books purely to use as decorations. If you want a cleaner look without all the distractions of the art styles on the slip covers, just… remove the slip covers. The binding underneath is usually very classically tasteful, not all white, but will look much more timeless in my opinion
Never, ever, ever buy sofas, chairs, bedding or anything with fabric in their composition. Bed bugs LOVE this stuff. And trust me, from experience, getting bed bugs from thrift store purchases is NOT something you want to do. Unless you really want to throw out EVERYTHING you own and moving in order to get rid of them, all over 1 piece of furniture you bought cheap but it was infested with bed bugs.
These are seriously great tips! Recently I’ve done my entryway almost for free, I repainted the shoe cabinet and knobs, I bought some wood to make a bench and lamps, used some decor pieces, baskets and plants I already had and it looks so cozy and natural and I love it. It’s all about creativity, not money 😌 my brothers didn’t want to believe it will look good at the end 😅🤣 they are impressed!
Thanks for the great tips! In my area, Benjamin Moore paint sample tins are $10 on sale, but only come in the eggshell finish. The quality of the paint is excellent. I’ve also purchased sample sizes of Annie Sloan paint. Pricey at $16, but again the quality is very good and great for a smaller project, such as painting an end table.
