That “Aquamoon” stuff makes me mad. A huge walk in stone-covered-beautiful taps-overhead-rainfall shower is a great thing to have, but overcomplicating things just to show off what can be done speaks of poor design. That’s exaclty that sort of crap you get when you are used to order “the most expensive variant of everything”; purity and functionality is compromised by marketing bs & “faff”. At the end was that a chandelier? The shower was absolutely stupid and he sounded like a snake oil salesman, good god the maintenance on that, I bet it would probably never work right anyways. There’s always the flashy at these shows in hopes to be the next trend it’s the classics that hold there value.
I remember when the Queen making the rounds in the royal yacht Britannia was such a prestigious and inspiring affair. Locals from each visited country would swarm the docks to see the glorious ship in all its magnificence. With the UK not wanting to make a yacht for the Queen because “it costs too much”, all it does is make the country look weak, cheap, and poor. So much class and prestige has been drained from the country already, it is quite sad really. I’d rather see the queen looking like a queen and treated like a queen.
Great topic to debate. As a Dutchmen we also have a Royal family with their own (or at least at some stage it was their own) plane and boats. Must admit i lost track of the latest status of this but when i was in the Air Force i was part of many Royal flights. I could see close up what it meant to the country and the business of the country when the Queen accommodated statesmen and their businesses on board. I can imagine the effect of a yacht would at least be double of that of a plane. So it is, like you said, not just ‘how much does it cost’, it a lot to do with prestige, image, and showing the best your nation has to offer in the design and craftsmanship of the product. Of course it would 100% have to be built in the country by the countries craftsman or the pitch will never work.
(Disclaimer I’m an American so politically I have no dog in this fight.) My first suggestion would be to just take the old yacht and give it a stem to stern refit and put her back in service. But if for whatever reason the decision is made for a new yacht, then there are some considerations. First it would have to be quite large in order not to be quickly upstaged by some Russian oligarch’s exercise in showing that while money can buy size, it cannot buy good taste. I am thinking mini-cruise ship size with classic yacht and ocean liner style interiors. Also there will be military and security considerations. All of which causes me to question whether such a vessel could even be built in the available British yacht yards. I would suggest building her in a proper ship yard while having the interior done by the best of British yacht and interior designers. I will forgo any suggestions about who would do the interior decorating and design, but for the shipyard, I do have one in mind. Harland and Wolfe.
Most of the time Britannia wasn’t used by the Royal Family, but for trade. Billions of pounds worth of deals helping the UK economy were signed on board, because overseas suppliers loved being on The Queen’s yacht. There are those who will disagree with the cost, but it would undoubtedly pay for itself many times over. It’s appropriate that the Head of State of a famously maritime nation should have a yacht. Other countries like Denmark still have one and it is seen as a national asset. Have we really become so blind to something good?

As a bloke from one of the break away colonies 🙂 I agree with your notion of this being a mobile platform to not only create or sustain jobs during its production, but to encourage Britain to expand its boatyard and ancillary suppliers. Despite the nominally high final costs of motor yachts, production yards are very sensitive to mild changes in the local economy and buyers are even more sensitive. Just look at how many builders collapsed or moved when the US introduced a luxury tax on yachts. The Royal family’s wealth, to my understanding, is heavily reliant on a lease back property arrangement with Britain and the colonies, as the Queen is the largest property owner in the world. It seems the 500m-1b cost could be somehow leveraged into that arrangement or be part of a renegotiation of that lease.
The old Royal Yacht actually spent very little of its time transporting Royals on their holidays, a great deal of its time was spent entertaining foreign delegates during business negotiations, there was always huge media interest wherever she went, lots of publicity for the UK, I think it would be a huge boost to British shipbuilding.

I totally concur with your report here, we keep beating ourselves up instead promoting the best of our capabilities. If I was wealthy enough I would build it for the Royal Family, I have travelled the world over the last 35 years and I have seen first hand how much business they do generate and it would as you say keep a lot of people employed for a long time and also allow us to compete with the global market.
As the Queen gets older and time passes by the Queen seems irrelevant to many countries of the Commonwealth. You never hear about the Queen launching new project in my country or building new hospitals. If you ask me being part of the Commonwealth is just a big word with little meaning anymore. If they want different countries of the commonwealth to contribute well then what they are willing to contribute should be made in there country employing there people and the finished product be shipped for finial Assembly. No the Queen decided it was time to retire the Yacht and I doubt she would be interested in getting another one, maybe Charles or William will look at it but the last true naval captain in that family was Prince Phillip. As part of the lottery, give out a week passage on the ship, and value it at 25,000 pounds. With some creativity, you could probably make the yacht pay for itself by selling access to the Royals through it, and to British Government officials as well. The more I think of this, Great Britain should do this, NOT as a holiday crap for the Royals to enjoy, but as a floating public relations and international trade outreach. Imagine what come corporate executive would pay to be on the yacht to have private access. If you build it large enough to have 40 luxury suites that rent out for 25,000 pounds a week, that’s a million a week in revenue (potential). Maybe less cabins at a higher price, point is to get revenues to the point the ship operates in the black for the British taxpayer. Also I think the Royal Family should offer to pay 10% of the cost and 10% of the operating costs. For this, they get their own super suite in the yacht.

Soon after, the bunting was broken out, dressing the ship in abundant colour. The side of the vessel was as shiney as a new car; an extradordinary feat for any vessel subjected to marine corrosion . The Royal Yacht was a mobile forum and floating castle, representing eveything that the United Kingdom gave to the world. It was the place where multi billion dollar deals were sealed on the strength of a handshake, and where business confidence was held high. We need to remember that whilst the Commonwealth had only 7 member states in 1947, there are now 54 member states. All this, a project for common global good, fostered by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II . Now that Great Britain is becoming free from the tethers and limitations of the European Union, it is appropriate that a new Royal Yacht be designed, built, & commissioned. It will uphold values of truth & dignity, and to be the facility that leads and consolidates the free world through the Commonwealth.
I would add that the prestige of a royal warrant will rub off on other UK players likely bringing orders that might go elsewhere. They should have modernized HM Yacht BRITTANIA. She was beautiful and her beauty was timeless. I know she is the most visited tourist attraction in Scotland now but having been brought up to date would have been important in its own right. Modernizing her wouldn’t have been all that difficult. Diesel engines and air-conditioning just to name a few improvements would have made her so comfortable. New beds w modern pillow top mattresses and new wooden fixers. Up to date lighting systems plus GPS and maybe even her own ability too protect herself if set up on. I really believe she had much more to give. Long rule BRITTANIA!
You do know that the Royal yacht Britannia was built during the Cold War as a refuge, Sanctuary for the Monarch, as head of Govt, in the event of war. She was built as a proper ship and naval vessel. No Fairing on hull or Luxury interior to speak of. To replace her, would cost nothing near your estimate. A new one would be built in a commercial ship yard. For reference, see the new luxury ships from Seabourn, 23,000 grt, at cost of $250 million. Or previous Seabourn vessels sold and completely refitted, Ie ” Star Pride ” for Windstar. For a Billion dollars, you get a cruise ship carrying 8,000, see Meyer Werft, Germany.
As a retired naval architect (aged 76) my thoughts are to have the P.M. chase after the handful of U.K. BILLIONAIRES in order to build a “private” yacht with the capabilities of accommodating members of the Royal family in their own accommodation, this way you take out the term a “Royal” yacht and thus the interference of the Royal Navy and save tax payers monies! The design will be based upon the U.K. Classic motor yacht design started by G.L. Watson whose Company still exists in Liverpool and are well capable of developing the design (120 metres l.w.l.) prepared by the author.
It is Not Only the hefty build cost of a new British Royal Yacht, but the running costs. Britannia had a crew of 220..!! Quite sobering when one considers that Roman Abramovich’s MegaYacht “Eclipse” has a crew of “just” 63. Also several of the European royals still have their Royal yachts, Norway and Denmark’s “Norge” and “Danneborg” for example, both considerably smaller and older than Britannia. If the British Royals want a new yacht, then great, BUT they should also contribute finacially to it’s upkeep,something the Queen was Not prepared to do apparently..

I’m Australian but I know Austal can’t do this. The new Brittania needs an embarked helicopter and hanger. Two large tenders which can also act as lifeboats but don’t look like lifeboats, if you know what I mean. Accommodations for 16 guests and 60 crew. A very large elevated back deck for entertainment, above the hanger. Overall style should not look like your typical Dubai gin palace so that rules out something that Lurssen puts out. Long-range but speed is not a top priority, about 16 Kts cruising speed will be fine. Monohull but with the best stabilisation systems (ballast, anti-rolling tanks and stabilisers). DP2 (azipods and bow thruster) for self-docking and safe launch&recovery of the tenders.
I’ve little doubt HRH Charlie III is behind the scenes encouraging this project. I’m hearing the same arguments put forward when questions were raised about the feasibility of building ‘Britannia’ at a time when England was facing severe financial hardship as it currently is. Back then…the establishment managed to overcome quite solid opposition by declaring that in time of war…the “Britannia” would be a “Hospital ship” a role she was not configured for and was only used once to remove personell from Aden when the locals rebelled against British rule. If the king is so set on having this enormously costly personal status symbol…to build and most certainly operate…I would suggest and no doubt many would agree…that he fund it from the royal family’s considerable fortune. Perhaps refurbishing and renovating such a venerable…historical and beautiful vessel as “Brittania” surely is…could be a viable option that won’t stick in the public’s craw.

Near the end when you discuss spending the money at home on the build people tend to look over THAT particular positive point. People can badmouth the rich building these but think of the families that benefit with employment and all the people they support locally with that money. I believe it has been shown that the short sited idea of mothballing the Royal Yacht (up and above the short term feel good moment for “Sticking it” to Her Majesty) was in fact as you point out a bad move. A new yacht would be a boost for British shipbuilding. Trade deals worth billions to the UK economy were signed in Britannia. An invitation to go on her was a great incentive for overseas business leaders. It more than paid its way. But what really matters now is the politics of envy. Practically has to take second place to political correctness.
the business that would be generated by such a vessel is unimaginable to most people, the trade deals sealed and the prestige of the RYB was so underestimated by the General public, a new Royal Yacht would only help trade deals around the world, It should be done,, Time to be proud to be Brattish and Made in the UK Brand.
Whilst looking at the costs of a Royal yacht, we should not lose sight on the income which Royal yacht generates. RY Britannia generated millions of pounds in revenue during its lifetime. I recall one occasion when £26 million worth of contracst were signed around the table in the Dining Room on one day alone.
I can see the value in a new royal yacht being an asset to trad between Britain and the rest of the world occasionally used by the royals for diplomatic relations between Britain and others. Regarding the deign too modern or fashionable would mean it could in a short time look dated so a tweaked version of the courant Britannia would tip the hat to tradition with a modern style but not to heavy on nostalgia. Big on innovation possibly electric powered Quiet a balancing act but now we are an independent sovereign nation what better way too say we’er hear.financing the project could be a combination of public and private money. We must look to the benefits for business and international diplomacy what better way to fly the flag for Britain looking forward to a new and exciting future.

Very fine presentation. Economics of shipbuilding should include what economists term ‘externalities.’ A Royal Yacht engineering and design competition would push British naval architecture and engineering forward for a new generation. You are right about the boost that kind of venture would give to the selected British manufacturers, their employees and the communities in which they live. Of course Britain historically profits from international trade. Rightly or wrongly, a good few nations have rulers and ruling families that would buy into this cachet and into the technological knowhow. Then, too, the best technology trickles down to the practical and more generally affordable realm. Great Britain has something to gain by maintaining its engineering reputation…and it still IS AN ISLAND NATION. Modern shipbuilding needs to be a part of Britain’s future. (END OF EDITORIAL!)
This is a tough subject to debate: 1. The hundred million pounds can certainly be used in other ways to aide the country’s economy. 2. However, this project will create a lot of British jobs and inject money into an industry that is not currently booming. 3. The issue is not just the cost of building the vessel, it’s the ongoing upkeep/maintenance. This thing will have to be staffed by at least 70-80 people full time and it will cost MILLIONS to keep it seaworthy annually. Yes, this does create more jobs. The real issue for me is timing. Brexit JUST happened and people already view the government in a much lower light. I don’t know that spending 100 million pounds on a luxury toy, irregardless of how many jobs it creates, is a bit of a hard sell. The only way I see this working is if the Royal family was able to put together a conglomerate of the largest ship builders in the UK to work together and all have a contribution to the project. This will be great for public pride and we know the British tend to be very proud (this is a compliment). They can also decide to build more than one within this conglomerate and presell the slots to wealthy Brits and use that to their image’s benefit. Just my two cents…
I am fully in favour of a new Royal Yacht. Britannia paid for herself several times over by showcasing the very best of what Britain can offer and not only in shipbuilding but a catalogue of products and services. And indeed, the Queen being one of the most influential people on the planet, where could you find a better head of marketing for GB Plc. Sadly, we have a lot of short sighted politically motivated types who simply cannot get their heads around the value for money and prestige the Royal Family offers.
Its such a no brainier, as we leave the EU to order a new forward thinking royal yacht can only be a good thing. Show the world what we do very well, Have different rooms designed by our world renowned interior designers. One of our world renowned nautical designers built hear and have all its ship systems from our country, I’de go for a giant automated sailing ship, will help with the running costs, and be something from our past we did well looking to bringing it and us into the modern world….
If the Royal family wants a yacht then they should pay for it themselves. The royal family has plenty of money, property and treasures laying around to afford it. It would be cool for the royal family to have its own yacht, I think it would be cool for the president of the USA as well, but it’s not a wise way to spend tax dollars.
There are many fine superyachts that started life as a more mundane Coast Guard Patrol Vessel or Tug. They should have stripped the Britannia and modernised, diesel electric propulsion would make a huge cut in crew alone. They did this successfully with the QE2. Good god, the Egyptian RY was originally built in 1864 and is still performing in it’s role.
If they need a yacht, I think they have more than sufficient funds to pay for it themselves. I don’t think it’s acceptable to buy a royal family a mega yacht with tax payers money is acceptable in this day and age. The argument that the money would flow back into the economy is an economic fallacy; they could also spend those resources on reconstructing roads, bridges or just dig a huge hole in the ground and fill it back up.
I am not British. I am American. I think that a royal yacht for the royal family of the U.K. is a great idea! I think the construction of any yacht is a great idea no matter how large! Personally I think that 150 meters is the perfect size. I say more power to you to anyone who wants to build a yacht of any size, especially if they are 100 meters or more in length! One of my favorite yacht designs is called Prelude by Laraki Yachts at 163 meters. I also quite like Dilbar, but not the name Dilbar.
The previous Royal yacht HMY Victoria and Albert was completed in 1899 and withdrawn in 1939 (eventually scrapped in 1954) so that when in 1947 Royal family toured South Africa, they had to use the admirals staff accommodation on the new 52.000 ton Battleship HMS Vanguard. The much more suitable HMY Britannia was ordered in February 1952 at the same time as Elizabeth’s accession to the throne. In 1982 HMY Britannia served as a hospital ship during the Falklands campaign.
Here’s a cheaper idea: Repurpose and redesign a small mothballed battleship from the Navy. The most expensive part of shipbuilding is the outer hull and the engines. Take a retired naval ship, strip it down, and redesign and reconstruct the upper decks for a classic yacht/ocean liner look. We did this in the US in the late 1940’s for the presidential yacht the Williamsburg. Pres. Truman got the world’s biggest yacht at the time for a fraction of the cost.
People have a misconception of what “taxpayer money” is. The Crown estate witch the government operates and takes money from giving a percentage to the Monarch is by rights the Monarch’s in entirety so in reality it would just mean the Monarch will be taking a bigger share of that pot (theirs by right) for their own use and not relinquish that portion of the revenue to the Government.
