What paint is comparable to duration?
Emerald and Duration are two popular exterior paint options. Duration is known for its excellent coverage, durability, and flexibility, but Emerald offers more efficient coverage with less product, saving money on materials and achieving full coverage in a single coat. Emerald’s unique cross-linking technology allows it to stay cleaner and last longer, surpassing Duration in terms of longevity and providing similar benefits.
Duration is a time-tested favorite with excellent coverage, durability, and flexibility. However, Emerald’s advanced technology, greater coverage per can, and cross-linking technology make it a better choice. The retail price for a can of Emerald is around $85, while a gallon of Duration is around $80. The cost difference is minimal, but Emerald saves time, labor, and material costs. When choosing a painter, it’s important to ask important questions to ensure the best choice for your needs.

I went in to my local Sherwin Williams store last week planning to buy Super paint for my new bathroom remodel but ended up leaving with Duration at the recommendation of the sales rep. It was also on sale, from $78 down to $50. Glad to know it has your approval. Btw, I ended up going with SW Duration Matte in the color sea salt for our hall bathroom remodel.
We had the interior common areas of our home painted in Cashmere flat in December 2021 because no other option was available. Big FAIL. Any kind of contact with the painted surface leaves a mark, and a damp cloth used to remove said mark leaves a smear. The high traffic areas–wall along stairs, corners where pups and small people run against, and the wall near the refrigerator will have to be repainted. Based on this article, I will test drive a few areas before committing time and $$. Thank you so very much for being so thorough in an entertaining manner. 🙂
I just finished a modern new build. Hands down Duration brand was better than the more expensive Emerald. As a matter of fact, since I painted my ceiling and 2 walls in SW GreenBlack, we had to do a final 3rd coat with Duration to cover the Emerald. Had I used Duration to start with I’d never would’ve needed a 3rd coat. I’ve been using Sherwin-Williams products for 45 years and always have loved their products, but, I will not recommend using Emerald brand.
People use satin on the walls quite often actually. This is especially important for homes with children where the added sheen helps with cleaning/longevity. That being said, a majority of homes we do choose satin for the walls and semi-gloss for the trim. All ceilings are flat besides bathrooms which are matte.
I call bs on the washability of at least the Matte finish. My whole 3200sqft house is painted in Matte Duration and I have to say, I find the Matte finish near impossible to clean, which is the only thing I hate about it. I like the look, but after our experience, I’d likely go back to using satin as my default. I also found that you can’t do the classic M or W type rolling with this paint. I reached out to our painter about this (her team did the upstairs) and found you have to roll and overlap in an up and down direction or you’ll see it in the finish. It’s otherwise nice to work with, has very little odor, and generally covers well. Covering extremely dark colors with a light color like white is going to take quite a few coats. I still miss their HGTV Home line they used to sell…now that was great paint that was priced reasonably. They seem to have revived it at Lowe’s, but I’m not sure it’s the same..Ovation definitely isn’t, hate that paint.
Duration is garbage. It wouldn’t cover in 2 coats over a light baby blue wall and a very light green wall. I complained to my Sherwin Williams dealer and they gave me 50% off on the paint I bought. The manager said they were having trouble with Duration covering in 2 coats. I’ve been a painter for over 30 years and I’ll never use Duration again. EVER!
Purchased Duration for my garage. It’s kind of a “detail studio’ so washing insided the garage with water going everywhere is important for me. I chose flat because you really don’t see people in garages ‘washing’ walls – With flat paint, you’re able to touch up much easier than you can with other paint types. I got my paint not as good of a price at $72 + 25% off only, so it cost me about $500 for a 20×20 garage in 2 different colors. Site white and Tricorn black for the ceiling.
