Living in hotter climes can lead to premature aging of exterior finishes due to long periods of bright sunlight, sand blowing from the beach, and salty sea air. This can cause rusting metalwork, chipping and scratching to paintwork, and damage to mechanisms such as window latches. Exterior paint can fade, peel, and chip due to constant exposure to salt water. Sealants help prevent some of these effects, but they are not a permanent solution.
Sherwin Williams Sea Salt exterior paint is a popular choice for homeowners looking to update their home’s exterior. Salt Away is a marine industry non-toxic solution made to remove salt film from the surface. When painting in coastal environments, salt spray contaminates the surface quickly and needs to be removed thoroughly. Salty moisture in coastal areas can damage paint by causing peeling, chipping, and fading. If the salty mixture hits the walls, it can cause paint to corrode, crack, and peel off the walls.
When painting the exterior of your coastal home, weather shield paint is a great option. It creates an extra layer of protection against the salt and sand. Salt and sand corrode surfaces and wear away protective layers, leading to chalky residue and eventual peeling or flaking of paint layers. Salt particles can accumulate on painted surfaces, causing chalky residue and eventual peeling or flaking of paint layers.
Salty air corrodes and degrades exterior surfaces like nothing else, especially metal siding. When salt particles are present, it can cause a significant amount of damage to the paint and deteriorate the overall appearance of the home.

Can I just paint over old exterior paint?
Painting over old exterior paint can give your home a fresh, updated look. If the existing paint is of the same type and the exterior is in good shape, you can paint without sanding. However, if the exterior is wood, you may need to sand it for proper paint application. Before painting, it’s essential to assess the state and type of the existing paint. A prime may not be necessary if the old paint is in good condition and adequately adhered to the surface.
What happens if you don’t sand before repainting?
Sanding is a crucial step in preparing surfaces for painting, as it helps remove imperfections and roughen glossy surfaces for paint or filling compound to adhere easily. It can be done by hand or with electric tools, and it is essential for removing imperfections on walls, ceilings, furniture, and floors. Oversanding and undersanding can occur, but it is essential for a smooth and durable finish. Despite the potential risks, sanding is a simple process that requires patience, protective gear, and elbow grease.
Why is it important to sand between coats of paint?
It is of paramount importance to sand the surface of a painting project in order to dull it, particularly when working with high-gloss coated substrates. The omission of sanding may result in adhesion issues during the painting process.
What is the best paint for houses on the ocean?
Rhino Shield ceramic paint is a top choice for coastal properties due to its ability to withstand harsh weather conditions like sun, strong winds, salty air, and high humidity. Its durable finish is less likely to chip, peel, or crack, providing long-lasting protection for seaside homes. Rhino Shield’s paint is designed to protect against the corrosive sea environment, ensuring its longevity and resistance to salt air and moisture, making it an ideal choice for homes by the sea.
What does salt do to house paint?
Salt trapped beneath a new paint coat attracts moisture from the inside of the house, causing the paint to peel off the siding. To dislodge salt, use “water blasting” with a high-pressure sprayer to hose down the house. After allowing surfaces to dry, apply an oil-base primer thinned by 25 to soak in deeper.
For radiators, preparation is crucial for a lasting job. Remove loose paint by wire brushing if the paint is generally sound, and feather smooth paint edges around chipped areas with medium, then fine, emery cloth.
What is the best grit for exterior paint?
To remove loose paint from bare wood, sand the scraped areas using 50- or 80-grit sandpaper or small random-orbit or pad sanders. Create a smooth transition between exposed wood and old paint using a 100- or 120-grit rubdown. If less than half of the old paint is left, strip it off using shrouded grinders, infrared paint strippers, or chemical strippers. Smooth the wood with a course or two of sanding. If using a random-orbit sander, wear a respirator to protect yourself from refuse, while a dust mask is necessary for hand sanding.
What’s the best paint for outside walls in the coastal area?
Coastal properties face harsher environments, making it essential to choose a specialist finish for their exterior. Choosing a good quality masonry paint, such as masonry paint, Pliolite-based products, or waterproofing masonry like Mathys Murfill Waterproofing, can provide extra protection. To redecorate coastal properties, it is crucial to prepare them for erosion, dampness, and rust. Properties directly facing the coast without protection from hills or other properties are more susceptible to damage from ocean spray, storms, and sun ultraviolet damage.
Additionally, properties with salt deposits on their surfaces need to be thoroughly washed off, especially for ferrous metals, as these salts can cause corrosion. If a property has substantial damage, consulting an expert for guidance is recommended.
What are the best exterior colors for coastal homes?
A coastal home is characterized by soft colors, soothing patterns, and comfortable furnishings that create a calming atmosphere. However, this decor doesn’t have to be based on the beach. With the right paint selections, you can create a feeling of the ocean being just steps away, even if there’s no beach for miles. Experts like Marian Louise Designs, Behr, Dutch Boy, and Minwax have recommended a variety of colors to create a calming, welcoming atmosphere.
Mimi Meacham, owner and principal designer of Marian Louise Designs, advises finding the right balance between creating an elegant seaside retreat and a kitschier beach aesthetic. She suggests having fun and not being afraid of playing with color, as it can create a more relaxed atmosphere. The key is to have fun and not be afraid of playing with color.
Does salt damage paint?
Salt is corrosive and can damage paint and undercarriage over time. It’s especially harmful when left unattended, especially in warm garages. Salt accelerates the formation of rust when moisture and oxygen combine on metal, making it more susceptible to damage. To protect your vehicle this winter, avoid parking in warm garages with melting ice, and use a car cover to prevent salt buildup.
Do you sand the outside of a house before painting?
Sanding exterior walls is crucial for creating a mechanical bond between paint coats. Inadequate surface preparation can lead to paint errors in the future. Surface prep is vital for health, safety, and the longevity of the new paint job. To ensure the best finish, follow these steps:
Remove contaminants, such as lead paint, which has been banned since 1978. If you suspect lead, don’t attempt to remove it yourself. A certified contractor should handle the removal.
Test the paint before proceeding with any further exterior painting prep. Mold or mildew are common contaminants, especially in humid areas. Look for black, green, or brown stains with a fuzzy appearance. If unsure, apply common bleach to determine if the stain is mold or mildew. Use bleach or another EPA-registered microbiocide or fungicide to remove mold and mildew.
Look for cleaners and degreasers that can remove grime, grease, and oil, as well as mold and mildew.
Should you sand between coats of exterior paint?
Sanding between paint coats is a common practice for both experienced and novice painters. It may take longer and require patience, but the results are worth the effort. If you prefer a quicker process, Five Star Painting can help you transform your home or one room. To protect floors and furniture from paint splatters, use high-quality drop cloths and painter’s tape. Assemble your painting supplies, including brushes, rollers, and paint trays, according to the project’s size and detail.
A clean and prepped surface is crucial for a flawless finish, so fill any holes or cracks with patching compound and sand down rough areas to create a smooth canvas for paint to adhere to. Call them at 261-3633 or request a free estimate online.

“Now I’ll have to remember you for longer than I have known you.” c.c.aurel . This definitely fits on the 3am edition because grief is something that will keep you up all night, way past midnight. I lost my mom in February of 2021 and my 10 year old nephew about three weeks ago. No matter how you interpret the song, it is about a loss. I grieve not only for the people I’ve lost but for lost time, for homes and places that don’t exist anymore. This song feels like that.
As a poet, this song is poetic perfection, from the lyrics to the performance to the music. So moving and heartfelt. You can feel it in your bones and every fiber of your being. Amazing, Taylor! It has been beautiful to see you grow and evolve in life and in your music. Keep creating because the world needs to hear your voice!
This hits my heart so hard. I lost my son to cancer when he was 10. The lyrics say a lot of things I often find myself ruminating over. I will never meet his grown spirit, nor see the man he should have been, our future together just gone before my eyes, and that pains me so deeply at times. I am confident I will be reunited with him again one day and that gives me peace, but this song definitely hits the grieved mama that still resides deep within my soul. 💜
In the first verse, I mourned an old relationship. In the second verse, I mourned those who lost loved ones. In the comments, I looked up the meaning of the bird in Asia, and it dawned on me this song is also about stillbirths, and I mourned that! And then I cried those salty streams from my eyes, thinking about my infertility and how I’m never gonna meet what could’ve been, would’ve been, should’ve been …you. Damn you, Taylor. Why you gotta do us like this? This song relates to so much! It deserves more views!
I’ve always rooted for Taylor’s sadder songs because those tend to be her hidden gems. When Midnights came out, This song was absolutely one of these. It instantly became my favorite song because of how it perfectly captures the feeling of grief, any kind of grief. You could literally articulate this song into any grief you experienced.
After suffering a pregnancy loss, this song really hits home and helps put words to all the feelings that come with it. And she released it in October, which is Pregnancy and Infant Loss awareness month. Sending love and light to all the loss families out there, including Taylor if this song was written about her own experience❤️
This song just reminds me of losing my dad last year. It has been without a doubt the hardest thing I have ever been thru and going thru. I miss him every single day and he left before he could see me married to my husband and I’m so happy and grateful I still have my mother. I just wish I could’ve seen them together for so much longer, so he could see me grow independent but he can’t and it hurts me so much. Taylor’s music has let me douse my feelings into them and let me heal and this song is doing it again.. thank you Taylor for everything ❤️
My cat, Frankie, passed away suddenly yesterday. I left the veterinary clinic in complete sorrow. I got into truck and this was the first song that played. I had to pull-over I was so overwhelmed with emotions. Thank-you Taylor for this wonderfully heart-wrenching song. I made a article tribute to Frankie using cuts of the song. It is on my website if anyone is interested. Cheers and comfort to all. Pacem omnes Vitae ad omnes Amor omnibus
This song is about a loss. It is mysteriously and hauntingly beautiful. The first time I heard it I broke out in tears because it’s about heartbreak, sadness, darkness, and something unexpected you can’t control that you’re faced with. She is so vulnerable and fragile with her lyrics. I think this is one of her best songs and certainly one of my favorites.
Initially felt like this was very fitting for a lost baby and not really about an adult that passed away… but then it made me think of my mom who passed before my kids were born. The amazing grandma she would’ve been. She’s always in the back of my mind, every day. I miss her so much. This song really brought out my yearning for her that I’ve tucked away in my heart for a while…
I read that this song was about losing a child, but it can mean so many things, like losing hope on finding the one, losing a loved one before they were old. For me being just over a year out from losing my child, it does feel that way because of my own personal bias. The beauty of music is that it means so much to so many. It’s a wonderful song of loss and grief for something/someone tangible or an idea.
I lost my entire family due to me leaving their religion and cutting out my abusive mother. They refuse to speak to me. It’s heartbreaking having to mourn someone who’s still alive, someone you’ve known your whole life, and always wonder what could’ve been. Thank you for making this song Taylor. This means everything to me ❤
As you all, I had several miscarriages and this last year, I lost my newborn grandson. He was alive on this earth 3 1/2 hours before he passed. This song explains every emotion and thought I had and still have today. I pray each and every one of you that have lost someone find peace, love and comfort at this moment and any moment during your lifetime. And thank you Taylor for writing and sharing this beautiful song with us.
this song reminds me when I was a little girl and my mother lost my unborn brother, I never saw her sad or cry, one day I learned to open doors and I found her in her room drowning in tears, she hugged me and said I can’t hide it anymore I need to cry to heal. never a song would have made me feel so much💔 sorry i’m not an english speaker. thanks Taylor
This song hits me the hardest from this album. I lost my mother to cancer just 3 weeks ago, and these lyrics depict many of the thoughts that are keeping me up at night. All the things we should have had but now won’t be able to. It’s just so unfair, grieving the loss of her and the loss of the future we were supposed to have together.
This song could also be about singing to a lost and unknown version of yourself. It could be about the grief that comes with the thought of never meeting your full potential in life or not achieving a certain dream you have for yourself. Like not becoming the person you were meant or supposed to be, a version of you who’s better in all ways. Like failing to become what “could’ve been and should’ve been you.”
This and Ronan go hand in hand. Both incredibly meaningful songs about loss (mainly of a child/baby) that express both sides of the coin. This is about the stinging feeling, the pain and frustration of not having your child longer, while Ronan is about the reflection on the time that was had with the child, and being grateful that you even had them in the first place. While still painful, it’s letting go of the pain of perceived injustice and accepting the blessing of their existence, no matter how short it was~
As someone who provides bereavement support to women experiencing miscarriage just know you are all not alone there are countless women going through you what you are going through. There are no words to describe the pain you are feeling and I hope you will be able to find healing in your time. Just know your feelings of anger, doubt, sadness, depression or anything you are feeling is valid and you are not less for feeling those feelings.
I misscaried twice after my first daughter and I was so scared to get pregnant again, I was depressed and trying to figure it out what I did wrong. But I was careful from the begining, actually more than with my first pregnancy. After tests I found out that was my high imunity what caused this. So with meds I took the chance 2 years later and try for another baby with my husband. I was scared from the begining, but it worked out and now I have two beautiful princesses ❤ But I will never forget my two lost pregnancies (first trimestr both times) and first time I heard this song I cried.
One of the most beautiful things about this song is how it can be interpreted in so many different ways that ring true to whoever hears it. Short lived relationship you thought would last forever, loss of a child, loss of a friend or loved one, miscarriage etc. Taylor will always be one of the best if not THE BEST and most incredible artists of our generation.
This song resonates me in the deepest way. Closing the door on fertility treatments was and is a huge defining moment in my life. What could have been, would have been, should have been will forever go unknown. And a piece of me will forever wonder. I am a mother today, in the most poetic twist of my life that had absolutely nothing to do with me getting pregnant.
When she said the thing about “Did a bird flap its wings over in Asia?” was when I started crying the first time I heard this song. Storks migrate from India and Pakistan towards the north of Asia, and though the song is obviously about a loved one’s passing, it wasn’t until that line that I realized the implication💔 sending a big hug to everyone who has experienced that
This songs hits hard home in so many ways to people, it could be in a romantic way, friends, family. Some months ago I just ended my friendship with some people that I considered they were forever, and just like the lyrics said, what could’ve we been? I always imagined us with our kids on a Christmas night, old friends. It looks like that will never happen.
I completely fell in love with this song when it first came out. I didn’t have any personal connection to it but it was just so beautiful to me. Then flash forward several months to about September of 2023 and my life long best friend tells me that she thinks she’s having a miscarriage. I won’t get into the details but it was just a really complicated situation from the get go and she hadn’t even known she was pregnant. We’re only 19 and she was not in a relationship with the father. And at the time she was in a really dark, unhealthy place and she told me she didn’t care but I knew she did. That was 3 months ago and she is now getting the help she needs and is doing so much better. She’s at a school right now that’s helping her use her art as therapy for herself and for others. She called me up yesterday to tell me she’s going to draw something beautiful for the baby, like the baby still in the womb surrounded by flowers. I know that it’s definitely not the same as loosing your own child, but I have to admit that a little part of my heart is now in heaven and I’m always gonna consider myself an auntie to an angel baby ❤🕊️
This truely tore the scab off of wounds I thought well healed. over 10 years ago I asked all the same questions to try and find reason behind a horrific MC. the moment you know your are pregnant you hope, dream and plan and then it is all washed away and the sorrow is overwhelming. I will forever wonder what our baby’s face would look like, what the sound of their laugh would be, the smell of their skin….
My aunt passed away 2 weeks ago after several years of being ill. I am in the medical field and helped care for her as a family member and as I healthcare practitioner, which was strenuous at times. My sister shared this song with me and it resonated more than anything I’ve ever heard. It captures the strange guilt I feel—that I didn’t do enough or I didn’t do the right thing—while acknowledging the absurdity of those thoughts. The lyrics capture the grandeur of who she was and who I had forgotten she was. I’m so grateful to Taylor for writing this song to help me get through and to better understand the emotions I’m going through with the loss of the matriarch of our family. Please tell your loved ones how much you love them today. Right now.
This July, I lost one of my closest friends of 10 years who was also my partner. He took his own life very unexpectedly. I feel like I break again every single day. When I heard this song it resonated so much with how I feel. To me, the “I’m never gonna meet what could’ve been, would’ve been, what should’ve been you” is me never getting to see the person he was becoming and wanted to be. 💔 This song hits so hard to anyone who has lost someone close too soon.
I don’t know if Taylor will ever see this but this week (22 weeks) we found out our baby has a rare syndrome and will not make it outside of the womb. We are heading into the hospital next week to deliver. The devastation is like nothing I’ve ever felt. We have named our baby Sky after this song. Thank you, Taylor. This song will be with us forever, as will our baby.
I love the part “Did some bird flap it’s wings over in Asia? Did some force take you because I didn’t pray?” It’s like asking- what started this butterfly effect that caused this tragic result? It reminds me of the movie “The curious case of Benjamin button”. There’s a part of the movie that shows random people going about their day doing little, innocent things and eventually all the little things that happened with these people caused a big consequence for a complete stranger later that day. If anyone of those random people had done one thing different that morning then the day would have ended differently for someone else. How/why did this happen? Did some bird flap it’s wings over in Asia? 🌏
My grandfather passed away from cancer at the age of 83 last Saturday. This song was on repeat since his passing and I miss him so dearly. He had lived a very beautiful and inspiring life and I’ve always looked up to him as a model of understanding and grace and a source of wisdom and lessons through the stories he had told me. He has been part of my major life events especially my high school graduation. His love and support for me and my family knew neither borders nor distance.
I just lost my best friend from an OD. This song was recommended to me. We only knew each other since early January and he passed late June so the short time part I can relate with. “I’m never gonna meet what could’ve been would’ve been should’ve been you” I relate with never meeting the clean him. I’m currently 8 days clean.
Even though I’m still a young adult and I don’t plan to have kids in the future, reading all these comments about miscarriages makes my heart hurt so much. I can’t certainly understand the pain because that’s something only a mom going through it can understand but even so, I know it’s so hard to keep going after such a painful and devastating experience. I’m so sorry for your losses mamas, my heart goes out to all of you sincerely. :(❤
Thank you Taylor Swift for making this song! It hits me right in the gut. Sept 11th 2020 my husband and I went to our first ultrasound appointment for our very first child. I should have been 9 to 10 weeks pregnant. We learned that our baby was measuring 7 weeks and had no heartbeat. I had no idea anything was wrong. I never had any symptoms that the baby was no longer alive. I miss my baby so so much but we got the surprise of our lives 6 months later when I fell pregnant with our beautiful little rainbow girl. I always say that her older sibling chose her to come into our lives!
Found out I was pregnant with my rapists baby two weeks after I turned 18. I lost my baby soon after… but for the short amount of time I was a mother I loved it. I was ready to become a mother even though my child was the result of something terrible. I loved them more than anything. This song says the things I haven’t been able to put into words 🤍
Cried while listening to this in a taxi. One of my friend was lost due to Covid-19 last year… She was full of hopes and dreams. We even have plans on traveling when all of this is over. I felt that it’s too soon for her. “You were more than just a short time.. I’m never gonna meet what could’ve been, would’ve been, should’ve been you. 😢”
Living with heartache for years, harbouring sadness, blaming myself, feeling useless. Everything I touched became sadness, a loss of identity, a trauma that changed every aspect of my life. Only sadness and regret prevented me from meeting the person I was supposed to be in the future (I just want to leave this message and I hope that one day I will recover)
I miscarried in August, this song captures everything I felt, and still continue to feel sometimes. There was no way I could ever be prepared for how painful and gut wrenching it is ❤️ I am comforted to see that I’m not alone, and that so many other humans are coming here to talk about similar experiences. This song is powerful that way ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I can not get over this ethereal ballad 🪐🌊
I don’t know what this song is actually about, but it’s taken a hold of all of us in the stillbirth community. My daughter was full term stillborn in December, taken from us in the very very last second. We watched all our plans fade before our eyes. Tomorrow is 7 weeks without her. Every part of this song is perfect. Thank you for making it Taylor! 🤍
Lyrically one of TS best songs. The interpretation can mean so many life events we go through everyday. I lost my older brother this past May. We didn’t have the relationship typical brothers can have because he didn’t accept me for who I am. Towards the end of his life he tried the best way he could in his mind. This song hits hard.
Hauntingly beautiful and hits me so hard. I lost my late wife after only 13 months of marriage and it was such a short time and with an incredible future ahead of us. I’ve healed in the years since but this song takes me back to that intense pain and sadness searching desperately for meaning and answers.
At the beginning I didn’t pay so much attention to this track… but after… I must say that is something undescriptible, more than a masterpiece ❤, and I don’t know if someone agree with me but I feel that this have some RDR2 vibes; Maybe, anyway, this is more than a song… it’s a jewel and a ruby so I must say Taylor did such an amazing work with this ✨
To my heavenly son lukas. I’ll quietly shed my tears and celebrate your birthday next Friday, your twin sister leah turns 18 too. I lost you at 5 months and 4 days, so painful and you were so tiny. I’ll be with you one day son, then our time together will start. I wish so much you were here with me and her. 😭💔. Life is so unfair but I feel you, always. You have another sister and 2 brothers now. Gone but never forgotten.
I’ve got a lot to live without I’m never gonna meet you That line hit me bad i lost my grand father (my mother’s father ) date 30 September i was soooooo close to him because my father live in Dubai because he doesn’t stay in Dubai because of his work he visits other countries because of his work that is why we were staying with him and one day he was sleeping in his room and that room was my favourite and i was with him i was perusal my phone and wanted to visit the mall but he didn’t wake up i was in shock and I call my mother and my grandmother and rest is history and i was 12 years old now i am 13 i lived 11 years with him and I miss him sooo much i love him sooooo much ❤❤❤❤❤❤
currently going through a miscarriage and these words are just so beautiful. im blessed and so grateful to have had 2 healthy beautiful children prior to this, but i cant help but look at both of my kids and try to imagine who this baby would have grown to be. while waiting for this album to release i never imagined there would be a song that hits so close to home on what i’ve been going through this past week. <3 sending so much love to all of you who have lost someone you love, there is truly no greater pain than the loss of a loved one <3
This song…damn. I wasn’t ready for it. It really shook me to my core. It is a really moving song. Anybody who’s lost someone will feel this song deeply. And when the song ended, I had this ache in my heart, could feel the sorrow like it is still fresh. I was struggling not to weep after this line, “Did some force take you because I didn’t pray?” Powerful. Relatable. And yeah, now, I’m weeping as I’m writing this comment.
I didn’t know the significance of the birds. The first time I heard the song it punched right through my heart there was no doubt to me what it was about it’s beautiful and haunting and so painful. I think to all of us who have lost a baby or child it has right away you know that pain. And Taylor is an incredibly brilliant writer and perhaps she wrote this from someone else’s perspective for her own but she captured the pain so deeply. And no knowing the meaning of some of the beginning it sounds like a stillbirth. And everybody has been trying to play detective if it’s about her, but Ed Sheeran about his friends stillbirth and it rips your heart into pieces.
