Ways To Create Homemade Glycolic Acid At Home?

This article provides a detailed recipe for a fruit-based glycolic acid peel, which is a natural and easy-to-use chemical peel that can be used at home to fight fine lines and improve skin tone. Glycolic acid is one of the stronger alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) on the market, derived from sugarcane and known for its anti-ageing properties. To make a glycolic acid peel at home, you need to pick the right acids for your skin type and goal.

To make the AHA peel, mix cane sugar and yogurt until a slightly granulated paste is formed. Use your fingers to apply the peel. For the homemade glycolic acid peel, mix 2 tablespoons of fine granulated raw sugar, 2 tablespoons of raw honey, and a little water to give a consistency that is easy to work with.

To make the homemade glycolic acid peel, dissolve jaggery in warm water and apply it evenly on facial skin. Rinse off after 30 minutes. Mix 1 spoon of favicol and half spoon of colgate and apply it over face and dry. After drying, peel it carefully. Mix 1 tbsp of glycolic acid (30 concentration) with 1 tbsp of distilled water and apply the solution to clean skin, leaving it on for 2-3 minutes before rinsing off.

This easy homemade glycolic acid remedy can help you achieve spotless, blemish-free skin without harsh chemicals. The recipe includes ingredients such as pineapple, papaya, a knife, measuring cups and spoons, a blender, a small bowl, and plain, unflavored gelatin.

  • This is fantastic! I’ve started doing my own peels at home over the last 2 years but with pregnancy and babies I haven’t been able to do as much as I’ve wanted. I just performed my first Glycolic (safe for pregnancy) and this article is a great tutorial. Not often you see the professionals teaching the public how to do things that they get paid for 😉 Thanks for posting!

  • This guy fixed my crappy, acne, and sun-damaged skin. At 48 I don’t wear makeup anymore to cover up my uneven blemished skin. However, when I was doing procedures and laser and peels etc… my husband was always worried as I looked like I had gravel rash on my face. Yeah, it wasn’t my best look, I used to scare other drivers on my way home from my procedures but my skin… it’s the best its ever been and I haven’t seen him in 4 years. So that’s telling you a lot. Thank you 🙏 😊

  • question – so I have seen people recommending a glycolic acid lotion like Donell – it’s 20% glycolic acid, but the lotion’s instructions are to apply and just leave it – no neutralization. How does that work?? I’d love to use it as I’ve heard great results from other people but is it safe?? Is it different than the acid by itself? If anyone knows I’d love to hear from you!

  • I needed this. I tried a 70% glycolic peel at home for the first time 😬 I tried a test on a small patch and …. Yes I burned myself. It’s now better, but part of my test looks great the other is burned but healing. I did another test patch on my chin and nothing happened. I tried on my nose and nothing. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. P.s the model’s reaction is hilarious 😂

  • I tried starting low and gradually increasing potency, but no matter how low I went, my skin just wasn’t happy. Eventually I just decided if I can’t use a low strength frequently, I may as well go for a high strength less frequently. In for a penny, in for a pound. So, just jumped up to that 30% AHA The Ordinary peel… and it was the same level of irritation as a mild acid toner! Don’t know if the pH or something is different with that that might make it less irritating and less effective? But, it was as fine as it was gonna get using exfoliating acids on my skin. Maybe I should leave it on for longer than 10 minutes? Also, how come it doesn’t say that that it needs neutralising (beyond washing off)? Is there something different about this acid peel? The way that people talk about it, it’s actually anticlimactic how little stinging or subsequent irritation there was! I feel like I might’ve done something wrong?? I would otherwise say that I did everything right, except using a neutralising solution, it’s just my skin is so reactive and prone to irritation, that I expected if it can’t handle a super mild acid toner, it definitely wouldn’t cope well with 30% AHA 😵‍💫 But, I’ve used it several times now (approx 2 weeks apart) and it’s been consistently fine. Not sure I’ve noticed any positive results either, mind

  • I have used 35% glycolic acid peel 2 days ago. When I applied it, it didn’t hurt much and also my skin not even turned red or burned but I felt very little tingling for the 1st few seconds then it was like normal. I let it on my face for 5 minutes and then neutralized it with water. The question is that why my skin is not peeling or flaking after 48 hours?? By the way my reason of using glycolic peel is boxcar acne scars. @Dr Davin Lim…I hope you will answer. THANKS!

  • Great article and very helpful. Thank you. I like your articles very much. With so many at home devices and treatments it is hard to know what is really safe and what is actually going to work or have any benefit. I also like that you emphasize the degree of results to expect. What about skin from different ethnicities? Are there any differences that can affect what treatments or products to use? And do different ethnicities age differently? I’m half Korean so I was curious

  • Hi Dr. Davin Lim, I’m a general practitioner from the Philippines. I love your articles, they’re very informative. I learned a lot from perusal them throughout the day. 🙂 I was wondering if you could make a review or comment about the hyped Aztec healing clay mask. Would love to hear your thoughts about that (an expert’s pov) thank you! God bless!

  • Thanks a lot, this article is very helpful, specially how to neutralize this treatment, yesterday I had my first Glycolic Peel 20 % the aesthetician let it for 35 minutes, i would like to know wich products should i use, wich serums do you recommend me, Hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, thank you in advance, (English is not my language, so i hope everything was ok)

  • love your articles very informative! I am trying to work on my skin care. I feel like I have tried so many things and nothing is working! I don’t have too many active outbreaks anymore but I do have a lot of underlying redness and some scarring if you could please email me I would like to send you some pictures maybe ask you some questions and find out what the best peel would be for me to start with? I really don’t want to get the wrong thing and be looking worse than I do now lol hope to hear from you soon! thanks 🙂

  • Hi! Really informative article. Thank you! I do have a quick question. I have a combination skin, oily t zone, generally normal-dry rest of the face. I purchased 70% Glycolic peel acid off Amazon and after checking the net for instructions, used it on my face. The 3 times I used it, I first diluted it to 10%, then around 20-30, then 35%. I kept the solution on for about 30-45 seconds and went upto almost a min. I had zero peeling or purging. My skin did get red and sensitive but no visible changes after each time? What am u doing wrong? What should I do additionally for this to work? I really hope you can help me with this!

  • Hello sir, Good evening from India. I had ice pick scars when I started using tretinoin 3 years ago (0.025% for 6 months, 0.05 for 4 months and 0.01 for 2.2 years, currently using a mixture of tretinoin 0.01% and Glycolic 12%) now many scars have come out on surface and they are now in the form of either boxcar or rolling. Should I use the Glycolic Or TCA peel and of which strength?? I have oily skin and built a lot of tolerance towards peeling materials.

  • Out of AHA, lactic, glycolic, and salicylic acid, for dark African-American skin (type 5) which is the best for an abundance of black heads and scars on cheeks, and hyperpigmentation around mouth? Also, intense hyperpigmentation from “razer burn” under neck? I have been using a product called PFB Vanish + Chromabright which has a little salicylic and glycolic acid in it every day for about three months now. It has helped quite a bit, but I think I’d like to try something stronger. Thank you. 🙂

  • I just order 70% GLYCOLIC Acid today. Is there a way to dilute the percentage? I have sever scaring from a “professional” laser treatment, and developed crepey skin after it healed. Now with aging (5 years later) I have small brown and red patches this is why I ordered a higher % grade. I also have my own professional microdermabrasion machine but it does not give the results I’m looking for. Although my friends love the results after I give them free treatments :). Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Sodium bicarbonate is baking soda. You said its soda and water, without taking into consideration that confused some. Soda is Pepsi, Coca-Cola, to half the world, they aren’t going to associate that with baking soda! Add soda and water he says…. And stop with the abbreviations, stop using terminology

  • I’m about to do my first Glycolic peel at home (for acne scar removal, and hyper-pigmentation) and this was very informative! Thank You! One question,When I purchased my glycolic acid I’ve read that I can start at 30% (I’m used to using Salycilic Acid for acne issues and have had photodynamic therapy in the past as so I don’t have extremely sensitive skin), would you still recommend I start with a lower percentage? The instructions with mine say to leave on for 1 minute my first use before neutralizing and build up from there in 30 second increments. I’d much rather be safe! Again great article, your fun to watch!

  • People will hate…if it makes them feel better. Anyone human will act like a human as it’s easier to act like a jerk than it is to push your negative traits to the side as a human. The ego is powerful…people would also rather buy someone else product that does the same thing…that’s on them though. Then like someone else said competitors…proactive is basic acne ingredients all in one…these ingredients have been around on the earth…proactive just put them all in one and sold it to ya. I buy basic ingredients but if possible I wanna make my own basic ingredients…

  • I use a 10% glycolic acid toner… I started preparing myself to try my first ever chemical peel and doing it right here at home. Doing my research and bought a 50% glycolic acid peel from QRx labs- is this too much!? Given that I use a 10% toner, is that different from a 10% glycolic acid peel? I use that every day and cannot live without it now that I have it. Am curious to try a peel with reservations, because I have eczema, but really want to see what a difference it could make.

  • Hi i need to know what’s best for large pores caused by old acne breakouts. I do not have acne now but these large pores really effect ms mentally. I’ve done TCA peels at home maybe 3 to 4 times but that was a couple of years back. Now am using The ordinary niacinamide, Salicylic acid masque and AHA BHA Peeling solution. Am looking for something more effective. Please help?♡

  • I love this article and i think its very informational on how to do a peel at home safely. I have a question though, can I do a glycolic and layer salicylic acid peel on top? is that safe? I just did a peel with 40% glycolic and 20% salicylic from skin obsessions website that I bought and I think it may have been to harsh and maybe the two should not be done together. I have acne post get off my birth control.

  • Hello doctor, Thanks for this informative article. I was having my dark circle treatment at a clinic and they were using mediderma sesglicopeel k 33% under my eyes on dark circles and the results were great. Now I wanted to ask can I use that sesglicopeel at home with the help of my friend under my eyes? Does the use of degreasing solution increase the effectiveness of peel? Thanks

  • Dr. Lim, that was a great article. I am doing a combination treatment at home for microneedling and 35% glycolic acid peel. I have 2 questions regarding it. 1. Should I get the buffered or unbuffered version of the 35%GA peel? 2. Is it safe to do Microneedling one weekend and GA peel the other weekend? Thank you so much in advance!

  • Can we do glyco 50% once a week or once in couple of weeks, today i did glyco 50 didn’t face any harsh burning or anything like that plz guide i hv pigmentation on face as well on my lower arm of hands i m about to do tca 20% after this if won’t see any results but need ur guidance as well if possible

  • really wish I had of seen this before buying and using a 50 percent glycolic acid Peel. I read some bad information obviously. it felt not to bad at the time but next day I notice I had two scabs under my eyes. one in particular took a while to heel. its not too bad now and mostly heeled but could there be permanent damage? also what happens if you don’t neutralize? thanks .

  • I am ordering a peel now. I did do a TCA 10yrs ago. If was painful but now I’m starting to get fine lines and I have acne scars. That’s the reason I had a TCA in the first place. I worked beautifully and my acne went away. I was left with the scars from the acne but if I didn’t to the peel it would have been worse. I encourage people who have cystic acne to see a dermatologist. I should have started on Retin A afterwards instead of waiting 10yrs but hey, that’s life. Lessened learned. I’ve been using Retin A for almost a year and feel I need a change so I will do a G-peel now. Wish me luck and thank you for showing me the correct way.

  • hi Davin..I paid already a huge amount on peels.and laser. I ended up with dissatisfaction as I felt they are just fooling out by taking lots of money. i am looking for nice lip peels and underarms peel because I have dark armpits due to using hair removal creams. I found your article very informative. so I expecting some valuable information on these peels. please recommend me few so that I can buy do it my own

  • Hlo dear I’m from India nd my skin is very sensitive nd extream oily face oily in specially forehead and nose area nd I have lot of bumps on my forehead nd cheeks please tell me which company glycolic acid peel and how much percentage I use please tell me which glycolic acid peel is available in india

  • Hey brilliant article. Thanks for the info to keep us safe and not to make any mistakes… also can i ask i have a lot of allergies even make up and very sensitive to stuff i put on my face im 51 and have deep wrinkles which acid would be the best for me. Plz i burnt my face last week just using avon overnight gel with no alcohol or purfume 😏

  • your patient made me smile:) im a foreigner currently living in south korea and its my first time to have pimples on my forehead and chin which made me seek a dermatologist. i had a consultation with the dermatologist and she just asked when the pimples occurred . she just told me the procedure to be done which is ACNE CONTROL FOR 3 SESSIONS AND LASER after. we head right away in the room and performed by her assistant. such a dismay…its hard not to have proper evaluation from your patients and establishing rapport and trust. since i dont trust the second procedure i just decided to have the acne control for 3 sessions. ill be seeking another dermatologist after my last session.

  • This is really informative. Ive done a AHA peeling at a dermatologist and get burned on my forehead and next to my nose (the concentration was around 30 or 35%).fortunately it was not a profound burnt but it scared me. My hyperpigmentation is not totally healed (it’s been 10years since I got it) and I was wondering if I should do a pealing again. With your article I think that I will do it myself (I will listen myself and neutralize as soon as I feel the burn).😀

  • You are so funny! I love that about you. I had to have a scar revision once and the plastic surgeon liked my music so put it on his sound system and whenever a song came on he liked he had his nurse write it down and we talked and laughed through the whole procedure. Rated #1 plastic surgeon other plastic surgeon’s would send their own family members to. 👍🏼❤️👏🏼

  • Do you prep with isopropyl alcohol for eveness and controll? I use gauze and a combination glycolic/ lactic. I’ll follow with TCA in a separate procedure after the gly/lact heals. I’ve seen TCA/glycholic/lactic all in one. I’m unsure about doing TCA combined with the other two. I think they should be done separately.

  • Look into the camera when you are directly speaking to viewers as you do after you apply peel. In the beginning, you’ll see your have a habit of looking off to the side. Otherwise you articles are fine. My personal preference for viewing extractions is without a tool ala Josefa Reina. But you have the right to do them as you wish. Your articles are fine. Thanks.

  • hi Dr. Davin! when you use TCA peels most of your patients are caucasians right? because for asians (Filipino patients) it causes post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. I had a personal experience during residency training when my senior did a TCA 15% peel in my upper back… it resulted in hyperpigmentation and dissappeared about 6 to 8 months. did you have experience using hinger concentrations of TCA peels on asian skin? 🙂 best regards.

  • Hi Dr. Davin Lim, I’m from Philippines and an acne sufferer for 2 years (and counting)… I tried having a glycolic acid peel but before that they perform facial pricking to extract the whiteheads and blackheads. Is that okay? because during the application of the acid I can feel the pain all over my face and I assume it is because of the contact of the glycolic acid with the open pore due to extraction. Is their practice acceptable? Thank you!

  • Hello doctor. I am a 30 year old man. I have a chemical burn under my lip. It comes back to about 10 yrs ago. This chemical burning was very deep a the beginning and after the burning what was left under my lip was a very red spot. I have a white skin and imagine how was my feeling. Anyway, fortunately I could somehow do a kind of peeling on my skin at that time by using cold weather, hot water and soap (ingredients for making the skin to dry) and in three months it turned into a bright brown skin from a bold red one. After about 10 yrs I still see this bright brown skin under my lip and I wanna get rid of it forever. Unfortunately, the previous ingredients do not work anymore or even if they do they barely help. Recently I have bought a 12% glycolic acid cream and I wanna use it for the spot. Can this cream help me to get rid of this brown spot? If yes how long will it take? Thanks a lot 🙂 .

  • ok, so, I’ve just discovered you and thought, YES, the aussie Sandra Lee!! and then I see you’re in Brisbane (booo for that, I’m in melb). I love your articles and find them informative and helpful. Thanks for posting them! I am prone to small skin tags so I would love to see a article on those. Regarding the dislikes, that’s the keyboard warriors at work who can strike anything down with a dislike. I have yet to see a article on youtube that doesn’t have thumbs down, no matter how great it is.

  • Hey Doctor! Thank you so much for this very helpful article! this is a very rare and valuable source of information, as very professionals have done so youtube. You are also very charming 🙂 two thumbs up! However, i do wish that you explained why glycolic acid must be neutralized when other acids do not.

  • Dr Davin, can I bug you with some general questions? firstly, I noticed on RealSelf you said the clarisonic is a good device. Is there any specific model of the clarisonic you recommend? should we wash our face twice a day or just once? Secondly, do your hair removal lasers for darker skin remove fine hairs? or can only normal hairs and course hairs be permanently removed by the laser? I’m looking forward to getting my face treated by you again soon 😀

  • I’m going to use 50% Glycolic acid, without neutrolizer or vaseline or anything else other than gauze wipes, after cleasning skin pat dry use glycolic acid then I put on retinol A and leave it in the skin and do this all before bed, it burns hellishly but 1-3 days time my skin heals regenerates and I look 10-20 years younger depending on my diet and excercise routine causes more youthful hormones to develop. no shit for real I take the pain I’m a soldier, I’m not afraid of anything!

  • OMG you are a wealth of information and I love your since of humor. I am visually impaired due to Multiple Sclerosis and also have hearing loss. My wonderful husband helps me when I can’t understand or make out what someone is saying, but I never have any problems with your articles, you enunciate every word clearly and explain so that even my Husband understands what he calls “The Girlie Stuff “. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge in a way that even my Husband understands ( he was a tough Green Beret when I married him 32 years ago and now he can do my nails, facials and help me find those girlie products ) LOL. Much love and thanks to you from two crazy old farts in Asheboro North Carolina. 😎
