📹 I furnished my *entire* house with furniture from Facebook Marketplace (tips for great finds!) 🏡
Welcome to day one of Plantmas 2022! Today I’m giving y’all a tour of all of our awesome Facebook Marketplace finds… we’ve …
The first things I sold on fb marketplace were beautiful MCM pieces my late husband loved and owned. A young girl was moving inter first place and bought a sideboard and the table and chairs. Later I also sold a beautiful MCM bed and dresser with its mirror and gentleman’s chest for a reduced price because I had to move. Great deals on there!
I have no experience with Facebook marketplace but definitely have made good deals on ebay with local listings. Your interior decor style is so wonderful, Elizabeth! Such beautiful pieces for your new home. It just shows that you definitely don’t have to spend outrageous amounts / buy new things to have an amazingly styled home.
I am currently working on styling a nook in our spare bedroom to use for filming my skillshare and youtube articles. I want to use all secondhand items if possible, and this article has given me a lot of confidence. While I don’t use Facebook marketplace I use the app OfferUp, which is very similar. You have some lovely pieces!
I’ve got a lovely secretary’s desk myself that I’ve just started using more – though mine’s painted a very dark and glossy brown. They really are just useful cute things with all those drawers, aren’t they? And making offers is always so scary – I too have chickened out before and bought an item that I probably could have gotten for slightly lower out of that mild fear, lol. Loved this article – your excitement and joy with each of your finds just made it such a pleasant watch!
Completely different type of goods but baby and kids stuff, also in Canada. Stroller, bed, clothes, moise, anything that seems useful but you know you wont need for long… Winter clothes for kids? Most people take good care of their stuff and you can save HUNDREDS of $$$. Absolutely worth it And also your furniture are gorgeous
Elizabeth, not sure how you feel about this but instead of refinishing your dining room set, try Howard’s refinish. You just rub it on and it helps cover the nicks and wood that is exposed. I have used it on my facebook finds and even my kitchen cabinets with great results. Also, old English scratch cover. Of course, nothing needs to be perfect.
💛💛💛 Love that sideboard for you! My spouse and I had one of those fall in love first home first thing that seemed like it had to be. All the items are so cute. I have a mirror on the floor in the middle landing area of our staircase. It just got set there till we cleared a place for it, and it just worked. Sometimes those heavy mirrors demand their own space. 😂
My mom inherited her mom’s secretary desk after she passed that they bought together in an antique store and it’s so pretty with these curved drawers and iron handles, though our cats have scratched it up a bit 🙁 I know it’ll be passed down to me one day and I love how special that makes it—never thought to actually use it as desk! My mom mostly keeps decor on it because it has a display area right above the desk part. I found this old receipt from the 50s going through the tiny desk drawers and I imagine it’s from the original owners of the desk so I keep it in there!
FB Marketplace has always intimidated me as someone with social anxiety, and I’ve been absolutely dreading the thought of having to use it when I move next year, both to get rid of my current things before I move and to get secondhand furniture for after. Your tips genuinely have made me feel more confident that I can handle it. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences–and the pieces you got are amazing!!
As someone who negotiates quite a lot (even in stores sometimes) here are some tips (I’m Europe based (Netherlands/Germany) and I don’t know how it is in other cultures/countries): – I usually start by stating that I’m interested but I always ask “can we do something about the price”. If they don’t want to go down that’s fine too, I usually follow up with “I’ll think about it, when would you need a decision?” And then I can decide whether to buy at full price or not. But I usually find that they lower it. In stores I usually search whether they have the item at discount online (for Germans: Mediamarkt also matches Amazon prices if they are lower, on certain items). Usually they match the online price. I know it’s nerve wrecking but there is nothing to lose. And if they don’t go down you can usually still buy it at full price ✨
One thing I think is important to mention is that in order to buy furniture off FB, you often need a larger car that can fit the furniture you’re buying. Renting a truck is also an option but it makes the whole process a lot more cumbersome. Also how important it is to bring a buddy when picking up stuff from a strangers house. Safety first always x3
Don’t be scared to look at companies, I’ve gotten great deals when a furniture company needed to get rid of a surplus and that’s how I got my tv console. Also my house is over a hundred years old and needed some updates, I found a tile company that was trying to get rid of all their out-of-date tiles so I went and bought all the tiles I needed for my second second bath but if you bought from their stock they had a huge pile of free tile they offered to their customers, so I found some beautiful old tiles I ended up putting around my fireplace. Along with search options Google other terms. (Example of coke vs soda vs pop), some call them sofas, some say couches, love seats, etc and even dressers vs chest of drawers, tall boys, etc. If there’s something you love but wrong color get it and there’s a ton of YouTube articles on chalk paint and those who don’t want the paint (like her secretary desk) there’s YouTube articles for that, plus lowes and Home Depot workers are generally really awesome at helping and explaining. But if you have the money there’s lots of people on Facebook market that you can pay to paint or restore items. Just look!!! Look at everything…. I got rid of our horrible 90’s shower kit and found an amazing cast iron claw tub…. I would have missed out if I never looked. Don’t be afraid to ask to meet half way on the longer trips. Expand searches to where you or your spouse works. I’ve got amazing parents who will pick stuff up for me two counties over and bring it to me when they visit.
You asked what kind of home-related articles we would request and my answer is – anything and everything! Paint choices, bathroom remodel, furniture arrangement, thoughts on color schemes, anything at all that you guys are working on, we want to see! Your aesthetic is so great, there’s lots here to learn for the less artistically-inclined among us. 💚🤎🧡🍁🌲
