Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has resigned as part of a wave of high-profile departures from the Trump administration after the midterm elections. Zinke, a key figure in President Trump’s sweeping plan to reshape the nation’s environmental framework, resigned under pressure due to multiple political attacks against him. He blamed his departure in a private resignation letter, obtained by The Washington Post, on “vicious and politically motivated attacks”. Zinke left his post at the Department of the Interior at the end of 2018 amid mounting misconduct allegations.
Zinke has been accused of using his position for personal gain and has faced federal investigations into his travel, political activity, and potential conflicts of interest. During his tenure at the Interior Department, Zinke eliminated national monument protections from more than 2 million acres of public lands.
In line with the Trump administration’s environmental rollback agenda, Zinke repeatedly propped up the fossil fuel industry, attacked the environment, and pushed for the elimination of national monument protections from over 2 million acres of public lands. Zinke’s resignation comes after reports that the Justice Department is considering whether to pursue a criminal investigation against the former secretary.
