Former US Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has resigned amid multiple scandals and ethics complaints. The former Trump Cabinet member failed to disclose details of his involvement in a Montana development project during ethics questions and an Inspector General’s investigation. While Interior spokespeople denied that Zinke’s career was in jeopardy, reports suggest the White House was furious and gave him the choice of resignation.
Zinke’s policy decisions at the Interior Department were overshadowed by several investigations into his business deals and connections to powerful energy players. As Secretary of the Interior, Zinke will oversee all 254 million acres of federal lands, including all the resources that grow on them and those buried below.
Zinke has been criticized for his actions favoring industry and moving the nation backwards on public lands issues and energy. Democrat Monica Tranel’s campaign boasts internal polling that puts her close to unseating Montana Republican Rep. Ryan Zinke in a race.
Trump’s pick for Interior Secretary will appear before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee today. Zinke has been remaking the agency charged with protecting public lands as an ally of big energy companies, with some major changes to energy and environmental policy under his leadership.
