Can Interior Kiltz Be Used To Prime Exterior?

Kilz primers are not designed for outdoor use, as exterior primers often adhere better, block stains more, and last longer than interior ones. Additionally, exterior Kilz products may contain biocide or other mildew/mold-killing chemicals that can affect the environment. The Kilz 3 Premium Primer is a fast-drying, water-based primer that provides excellent adhesion to both interior and exterior surfaces, including masonry, metal, and bare wood.

For exterior projects, Kilz recommends using water-based primers like KILZ® RESTORATION or oil-based primers. For new interior surfaces, PVA Drywall or Standard Interior Primer are suitable. For glossy, slick surfaces like aluminum, Kilz 2® All-Purpose Primer is another product formulated for both interior and exterior use.

Kilz 3 is an oil-based primer, sealer, and stain blocker ideal for heavy stain blocking, sealing multiple interior and exterior surfaces. It has excellent stickability and is not recommended for use on interior walls.

While it is possible to mix two different paints/primers together, it won’t get the best of either. If you have done enough prep, you should be fine with the exterior paint. Kilz comes in latex and oil-based primers, and only use oil-based paint over the oil-based primer.

📹 Kilz 2 Primer Review – Why We Like It and When You Should Use It

In this video I’m discussing why I like Kilz 2, when I use it, when I don’t, and what projects I recommend the DIY Painter to use it on.

How long does it take Kilz primer to dry outside?

Kilz primer is a faster-drying option that can be ready for a topcoat in as little as 60 minutes. Its drying time depends on the weather, with less humidity and higher temperatures being better. Natural ventilation and sun also help it dry. In 80-degree weather, it should take around 60 minutes. Oil base primers are recommended for wood, as they typically do the best job in prepping the wood for paint.

However, it is recommended to give oil base primer a couple of hours before painting to ensure proper soaking and settlement. Test a spot before painting to ensure the primer is dry before applying paint.

Is there a difference between interior and exterior paint primer?

Interior and exterior primers are essential for protecting and sealing paint, but they should not be applied interchangeably as they are designed for different materials. Interior primers increase paint adhesion for a more evenly coated wall, while exterior primers help paint withstand the seasons and prevent issues like mildew growth. Drywall and bare wood trim typically use interior primers, while exterior primers are typically reserved for masonry materials.

There are three major types of primers: latex, shellac, and oil, each designed for different surfaces and paints. It is crucial to match the primer with the chosen paint material to avoid damaging the paint and wall. Latex-based primers are the most commonly used, as they are flexible, fast-drying, and effective at covering minor stains. They can also be used on softer woods or masonry surfaces and are water-soluble, making cleaning faster.

Can I use an interior primer outside?

Choose the right paint primer for your painting job, based on the type of paint and surface being painted. If the job involves indoors and outdoors, use an interior/exterior primer. For interior surfaces like metal, wood, drywall, cabinets, wallpaper, and tile, use a high-quality latex or oil-based primer. For exterior surfaces like brick, plaster, and stucco, use a durable exterior primer that protects from mildew and minimizes cracking and erosion. For stained wood or redwood or cedar, use a stain-blocking primer. Separate primers should be used for indoor and outdoor use.

KILZ Original Interior/Exterior Primer is an oil-based primer, sealer, and stain blocker designed for heavy stain blocking, sealing multiple interior and exterior surfaces, and preparing them for painting. It is best for use on almost all exterior surfaces, including stucco, wood, masonry, and brick. It is not recommended for use on flooring. All surfaces must be clean, free of dust, chalk, oil, grease, wax, polish, mold, mildew, loose peeling paint, rust, and other foreign substances.

If washing is necessary, use a non-soapy detergent or a TSP substitute, rinse well, and allow to dry. For glossy surfaces, scuff sand thoroughly before priming. For masonry, brick, stucco, and plaster, use KILZ® PREMIUM or KILZ 2® Primers if masonry has cured at least 90 days. For fire restoration, clean damaged surfaces thoroughly before priming. Primer recommendations include water-based primers like KILZ® RESTORATION or oil-based primers like KILZ® ORIGINAL (interior use) or KILZ® ORIGINAL EXTERIOR.

Can you use Kilz as a bonding primer?

KILZ® ADHESION Primer is a water-based, modified-acrylic primer designed to facilitate adhesion to a range of challenging surfaces for which painting is otherwise difficult. To ensure optimal product performance, it is essential that surfaces be free of contaminants, thoroughly cleaned, and completely dry. In the event that washing is required, it is recommended that a non-soapy detergent or a TSP substitute be used. The surface should then be rinsed thoroughly and left to dry.

Do you need a special primer for exterior paint?

In the event of a change in exterior color, the use of exterior primer is imperative. This step facilitates a more seamless transition and is a more cost-effective alternative to investing in additional coats of the finish color, making it a prudent investment.

Can interior undercoat be used outside?

Paints are designed for specific surfaces and environments, and it is not recommended to use interior paint for exterior projects. Interior paint can be expensive and wasteful, especially if you have an exterior project to finish. To ensure long-lasting and durable results, it is best to use exterior paint. Professional painters at VanDerKolk Painting, specializing in residential, commercial, and industrial projects since 1991, can help avoid mishaps and provide thorough and efficient results. Their trained team guarantees thorough and efficient results.

KILZ® ORIGINAL Oil-Based Primer is a stainblocking formula that effectively blocks most heavy interior stains, including water, smoke, tannin, ink, pencil, felt marker, grease, and pet, food, and smoke odors. To use this product, surfaces must be clean, free of dust, chalk, oil, grease, wax, polish, mold, mildew, loose peeling paint, rust, and other foreign substances. If washing is necessary, use a non-soapy detergent or a TSP substitute, rinse well, and allow to dry.

For glossy surfaces, scuff sand the surface thoroughly before priming. For peeling or checked paint, scrape off loose paint and sand to a smooth surface. For mold or mildew covered surfaces, wash the area with a mildew remover, rinse with water, and allow to dry before priming. KILZ ORIGINAL Primer can be used on clean, dry, aged masonry surfaces that have cured at least 90 days. It is crucial to clean smoke damaged surfaces thoroughly before priming.

Eye protection is recommended, and the product should be applied using a brush, roller, or sprayer. The product should be used when the painting surface and air temperatures are between 35°F (2°C) and 90°F (32°C).

What happens if you use interior paint for exterior?

Interior paint used on an exterior surface can cause aesthetic flaws due to its inability to withstand exterior elements, leading to cracking, blistering, bubbles, and peeling. It is not recommended to use interior paint on an exterior surface as it may not last long. Repairing this damage requires sanding the paint off the substrate, sealing with an outdoor primer, and repainting the entire area with the appropriate outdoor wall paint.

This can be time-consuming and costly. If an accident occurs and indoor paint is used outdoors due to a wrong label, applying 1 or 2 coats of outdoor paint immediately after drying can save the paint.

How long will interior paint last on the exterior?

The necessity for repainting outdoor interior paint may be contingent upon the duration of exposure, with a period of approximately one to two years being a typical estimate. It is recommended that a weather-resistant sealer or waterproof paint from Walmart be considered for durability. To improve paint adhesion, lightly scuff sand cabinet surfaces using 150 or 180 grit sandpaper. Wipe down cabinets with a damp cloth to remove dust and residue for a smooth finish. Primer application is crucial in cabinet painting, especially in high-traffic areas like kitchens. KILZ 3 ® PREMIUM Primer is recommended for its excellent adhesion, mildew-resistant coating, and protection against future paint chipping or peeling.

It also provides coverage for medium-to-heavy stains, ensuring the dark color of the island doesn’t bleed through the paint. Using a primer ensures the job is done correctly the first time and prevents the need to fix old mistakes. This step ensures a successful and smooth cabinet painting project.
