Scotty’s Builders Supply, an American retailer of home improvement and construction products and services, closed in 2005 after operating around 150 stores. The company, also known as Home Builders Supply and Scotty’s Home Builders, shifted its focus from large hardware and home improvement supplies to small hardware. The company was founded in 1924 and changed its name in 1968.
Scotty’s faced competition from Lowe’s and Home Depot but was ultimately destroyed by Hurricane Charley. A group of Scotty’s top managers acquired the hardware and builders supply chain from its Belgian owners for about $100 million, including assumption of ownership. The company was instrumental in helping supply building materials to the early real estate booms of Florida.
In 2003, Scotty’s sold its 52-acre headquarters and warehouse in Winter Haven to W.B.S. Properties of Boca Raton, which turned it into a business park. Scotty’s has long specialized in the do-it-yourself home improvement market, selling to homeowners who prefer to do their own construction work rather than hire professionals.
The company grew to become a hardware and building supply chain that went public on the American Stock Exchange before being purchased by a Belgian company, GIB. In 2003, the company sold its Winter Haven warehouse and corporate headquarters. Last year, it filed for bankruptcy court protection.

Why is Scotty’s castle Road closed?
Due to ongoing flood recovery efforts, Bonnie Clare Road and Scotty’s Castle are currently inaccessible to the public. It is anticipated that these routes will reopen in late 2025. Access is prohibited, and vehicles, including those operated by foot, bicycle, or motorcycle, are not permitted. In order to mitigate the impact of flooding on the roadway, Caltrans is implementing gabion structures along CA 190. Additionally, Harry Wade Road has been provided with a substantial layer of sand at its northern end.
Will Scotty’s castle ever reopen?
Scotty’s Castle is scheduled to resume operations in December 2025, following a decade of restoration and reinforcement. In the interim period, the Death Valley National History Association has scheduled private walking tours for 2024, which will represent a significant milestone in the region’s history.
Who owns Scotty’s Castle?
Scotty’s Castle, owned by the National Park Service and part of Death Valley National Park since 1970, has been a popular tourist attraction. Park rangers, dressed in period costumes, lead tours and tell stories about the Johnsons and Death Valley Scotty. In 2015, a flood damaged the castle, but the National Park Service is working to rebuild and restore the area. Visitors can tour the castle with a living history guide, visit the museum, walk to Albert’s power house, and explore the green oasis and rock gardens on the grounds.
What happened to Scotty’s Castle in Death Valley?
A fire on April 22, 2021, destroyed a historic garage/workshop and another outbuilding on the Death Valley Scotty Historic District in California. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported that the fire started inside the Visitor Center, but investigators were unable to definitively determine its cause. This delayed property rehabilitation efforts and pushed back the public reopening until 2023. The National Park Service plans to rebuild the garage/workshop.
Scotty’s Castle was featured in a 2023 episode of the paranormal reality show Ghost Adventures due to claims surrounding the location being haunted. These claims revolve around allegations and interviews regarding Walter Scott, the 2015 flood, the 2021 fire, and recountings of activity in the mansion. The Ghost Adventures team experienced several instances of what they interpreted as paranormal activity, including electronic voice phenomenon recordings (EVPs), strange SLS camera footage, IR footage, and photographs.
The National Park Service has been working to restore the castle, which may be closed for a year or more due to flash floods in Death Valley. The National Park Service is currently conducting flood recovery tours and is working to address the fire investigation. The National Park Service intends to rebuild the garage/workshop and the main castle building.
