📹 The Reason Jonathan Taylor Thomas left Home Improvement
Home Improvement was such a hit in the 90s. It was part of a great Tuesday night line-up of television that included Full House, …
I remember Tim Allen being interviewed on one of the nighttime entertainment shows. He was asked about Thomas leaving in the last season. He looked very hurt and said he felt Thomas had followed some very bad advice. He didn’t go into details, but you could see he was very affected by his leaving. At least they didn’t try to replace him, or pull an “Oliver” move on the viewing audience.
School is important but I wished he could’ve stuck around for at least a few more episodes, maybe half a season but it looks like it worked out for the best. Now, the young lady who left the tv series, “Mom” suddenly. Can’t say for sure, so this is a guess..I think she needed some time away but I have a feeling she will come back, maybe for a series finale episode.
Tim Allen is quoted as saying that he was hurt that jtt left the show in it’s 8th season and that he thought he probably had taken some bad advice. But I actually think from a business point of view it was the smartest thing he ever did! He actually made a smarter decision than Zachery ty Bryan and Taran Noah Smith in that he made four or five movies while he was still a bankable teen star and today he has a net worth of 16 million dollars, four times the amount of Zack’s $4,000,000 net worth. Taran Noah Smith had 1.5 million but let his relationship with a much older woman destroy his wealth and now he only has about three hundred grand left. Now JTT can just live off the 16 million dollar interest income for the rest of his life if he so chooses.
I always believe performers should stick it out for the full run of a hit series because their presence or absence may very well dictate if that show remains on the air. Pay your dues. However, it takes integrity to stick it out even when being offered other things. Tom Selleck is a great example. He was ready to say goodbye to Magnum but he felt the weight of his decision and wanted those employed because of him to have one more year to prepare. That was class. Too many people (and the list is long – Farrah, Travolta, etc) take off and regardless of their rationale, their choices do affect others. I know it’s hard to deal with movie offers and such you have to say “no” to because of a series, but I like the celebs who tough it out, remain loyal, and honor their commitments. Farrah and Travolta are actually exceptions because the vast number of “hit” stars leave to do movies and are just never heard from again. I didn’t pay a lot of attention to JTT’s situation, but he was a big kid star and I would assume it was difficult to remain true to the show that made him a star. I don’t know … but I loved him in Man of the House (with Farrah, by the way).
I feel it was ill advised of him to leave the series at that point, I think he was ill advised and made it personally a wrong decision. It would have simply been “Classy” on his part to honor his commitment to the series run instead of bowing out so early in the final season he could have postponed whatever for several months and resume his plan. Whether it was for education, college or a tentpole movie. I guess money wasn’t the motive at that moment can we say he lost out on Syndication residuals ? Bottom line was not a good look ! It was very disrespectful in the manner it played out at the time, he should have been more grateful to Tim Allen because it made him a star.
