Remodeling is a great opportunity to improve your home’s energy management, including insulation, heating system upgrades, and installing light sensors. In most states, homeowners can do un-certified electrical work on their own homes, but California may require certification. Home improvements like home offices, better lighting, and basement apartments can increase the appeal, value, and functionality of your home.
Electricians are often needed during home renovations to install or upgrade light fittings, home automation systems, and power systems. Hiring a professional electrician is essential to ensure that all electrical systems are up-to-date and meet code requirements. It is important to consider the size of your electrical system to your home’s electrical needs and ensure that it is adequately dimensioned to your home’s electrical needs.
Building all-electric from the start is easier and more cost-effective than retrofitting a house built with gas infrastructure. Professional electricians have the knowledge, expertise, and experience to carry out electrical installations safely and efficiently. In 2024, homeowners can potentially qualify for an Energy Efficiency Home Improvement Credit of up to $3,200 for energy-efficient improvements made after Jan. 1, making remodeling a significant financial investment.
In summary, remodeling is a great opportunity to make your home’s energy management more efficient, and it is crucial to consider the importance of electrical work during renovations. Professional electricians can help carry out electrical installations safely and efficiently, and homeowners can potentially qualify for tax deductions for energy-efficient improvements made after Jan. 1.

As an expatriot living in Europe, I have also done my own building/remodeling and learned on-the-job. So while perusal what you guys do, and how you solve problems, is salient and enjoyable, I remain a long-time subscriber because I love the wholesome and refreshing attitude you both have, as I enjoy with my wife. Much love to you both. ♥ Oh. Edit -> No tour of the house. We will see it all in time as your attention shifts. Respect to the private life.
Good evening. Victoria and Ricky, you two make a good couple. You two can work together as if you do it for many years. I like you articles. And keep you living space private. I am 77 yrs old, I like my private space all my life. I enjoy you two youngsters. You can still learn alot more in the years to come. Keep it that way. Love each other the way God loves you. Enjoy the week. Till next Sunday. Greetings Namibia.❤❤😂
Best article yet. A lovely insight into a lovely couple. I live in Australia, I’m 75 and here’s my advice. Keep your main house private, you give enough of yourselves as it is. 2. Stay single, never fix what isn’t broken, you are wonderful together, you don’t need legalities to prove that. Lots of love from an ex pat brit in Brisbane. X 4 Ricky X X for the dogs and X for Victoria. ❤️🐾❤️
Your greenhouse panels are a tricky one….happened to me too. The panels are actually coated with a UV resistant film only on the one side. The UV side is marked on the plastic film when new….which one pulls off. If you did not know this there could be a possibility that you may have put the panels upside down. 😅
It’s coming along beautifully. I have been perusal from the start and you both have certainly have come such a long way. I must say that not having any Experience wow you Our doing it and a slow pace is so much better to do it right!! So cahoots for you both❤ Thank you for sharing your charm and fun facts with us all. God Bless and see you soon.❤️🇺🇸🙏🏻 P.S. I can’t 4 get the🐕🦺🐈⬛
I think I might just be your only fan/subscriber from the Caribbean! Love your projects, love the garden adventures, love the tiny house plan, love your ‘can do’ approach, love Victoria’s sense of humour! Haven’t heard you mention the fires in Portugal … are you far away? Love the dogs! Carry on huys!😊🐕🐶😊
Harriet and I agree with the previous commenter. You have to have a Safe Place that is private. You come first not us. We are not the most organized people in the world, welcome to that club. It sounds like we have a lot in common. 15 years not married. It’s time. You guys are soul mates. Couple of questions ? Are you learning Portuguese with someone? And are there any plans for Portuguese Citizenship? . Harriet and I echo the commenter below : ” indeed, you the sweetest couple on YouTube . Best Wishes for sweet success in your future endeavors. 👍❤👍 Harriet, Jim and Yuki heading to Cambridge, England to visit family
I think it’s funny that you had so many questions; easy questions to me. I just love perusal you two and just finished perusal the articles again from the very beginning! 😂😂😂 I can’t get enough of you two! Feel free to make the articles longer; they are finished before I know it! 😅 Ricky, ask her to marry you! She is such a gem! ❤❤
Amazed by your floor plan and what you are going to fit into the small home. Surprising what a good plan can produce. Liked your questions and if you don’t want to show where you live then that’s fine because eventually we will see the work being done on that home anyway. Your dogs are just beautiful and your raised garden beds will give you a lot of veggies etc.
Think of this project as a living museum. You are working each day to build/restore a building to your specifications/needs. There is no hurry. You are working steadily towards a goal, not a date. The guest house is your experimental project. This is where you learn how to do renovation work. You’ll take that knowledge to the big house and renovate it to your best standards. (or make all new mistakes. Lol) In addition, you’re learning how to farm in a new environment (let’s face it, this isn’t the U.K.) It’s not easy to learn weather patterns, seasonal issues, predators/insects, quality of earth etc. Keep doing what your doing, and we’ll just follow along.
A great article and one of your best yet! We’re all such nosey buggers aren’t we – Now the greenhouse needs some 10mm thick twin-wall polycarbonate. It should be UV coated so put it up the rightway and get the coated side on the outside. Sounds simple but someone not far from this keyboard got it wrong. The thin stuff just won’t last so replace it all. Have fun = 😃😃😍😍😎😎 BTW – we were together almost 25 years before we did the deed. She said she wanted to make sure !
Not to say you must get married but i do know that some countries frown upon not being married and one should know what happens if – low and behold- one should pass away… e.g. here in Turkey I’d be left with zero assets if i were not married to my husband…it would all automatically be inherited by his siblings…no rights for an unmarried partner.☺ Even if there is a will – the country’s law on this supersedes any will.☺
Never even thought about it I just enjoy your articles your personal life is your own you seem to have a beautiful relationship I very much enjoy the banter between you and you’re such a wonderful people but your private life is yours I agree with people that state but you don’t have to put everything else there how wonderful that you’re even sharing like us.
YOOO not new. With you since well, almost the very beginning I guess, idc when you guys get married or anything, I know what ever happens you guys are 4life. I am still waiting for you to adopt me though 🤣 So if you do get married then there is all the more reason to do so. Just saying #adoptastrangeviking
Just love it when your posts pop up, highlight of the day! You work so well together and learn as you go! It’s going to be such a beautiful place when you’ve finished and it doesn’t have to have an end date. Oh and please keep your private living areas just that, it’s so important for you both💕. Thank you for sharing your extraordinary life and experiences with us, take care🥰
I really think you should hold off showing the interior of the main house until you have completely finished renovating the tiny (barring the porch) and you’ve well and truly moved in! Then you can keep the tiny private and show all of the main house! It will keep your audience interested and you can still maintain some privacy and reveal or conceal on your own terms.🤗
Great article as always, thank you for sharing and I agree with others in the comments, you should have some privacy and a space that isn’t part of YouTube for all to see. Anyway when the tiny home is completed and you move in, you’ll start renovating the main home and we will all be along for that journey and get to see the inside then. Love to you both and the dogs❤🇬🇷🇬🇧
For myself—you have presented yourselves with dignity, hard working, delightful personalities, eye witnesses to your closeness as a couple, humble ….i would not be here perusal otherwise….i see you for yourselves….there is a saying in the Bible….by your fruitage you will get identified….thank you for the joy of your site…..I need not ask questions…
Hi! I loved this article-I love all your articles out of all the DIY couples doing them you two are the Happiest-Funniest and just so DAMN cute together. I agree with other viewers don’t share what will embarrass you. You need your privacy. If they don’t like that-tooooooo BAD!!! Thank you for being such good people 😀
… and that is reason why you have 100.000 viewers! Also, have privacy, don’t answer all the questions and don’t think you owe us every part of your life! You only can do YT for a long time if you have a healthy way to separate you article content from your privacy. Don’t feel pressure to show more than you are comfortable to do.
Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong but Americans seem to be preoccupied with the marriage thing. Most long lasting couples that I know are not married. Some of them have kids, some of them don’t. So I do get what Victoria said: “IF I ever get married, it will be to you” (or something to that effect). At any rate, great idea for a article. Have a nice week.
I believe in privacy. We have been married 54 years and each of us has our private space (our home is not large). You need it to recharge to step away from the irritations of living with your best friend. You do not need to share everything with us. I enjoyed the question and answer session that was lovely. It is enough that you are letting us tag along on your journey. (remaining mysterious is a good approach to keeping people interested)
It’s all coming along really nice so tedious that work is. On the marriage thing I do get it, what’s the difference? I know people who only got married after 30ys and retirement because of pensions and house stuff. Piece of paper really won’t change anything you had all these yrs. Love your articles look forward to next week. Argue ?? Would love to meet the couple that never has😂😂😂
In many ways it would be nice to see the inside of the bigger house before you start renovating it but then equally it is your private space and I for one can understand your need to keep it that way. Another great half an hour (ish) perusal your progress this past week, it’s fast becoming something I and I’m sure everyone else really look forward to, well done folks.
Gosh, I didn’t realise the main house only consisted of 2 rooms. So essentially you bought a one bed cottage and a barn but an awful lot of land. I wonder who lived there before? An elderly couple probably? Have been perusal some very early articles this week. Did you use the plunge pool this Summer or too busy with the tiny house?
Okay most shocking thing I learned. Really you are married! You would have not known. You present as a very strong married couple. Now in saying that I am across the pond in the USA and relationships, and marriage is totally a different view here. Really I think it is totally your business and wish you many happy years together.
Victoria and Ricky from a purely security conscious side to life these days, I would advise you to remain alouf of where you live and how you do so, as all too often people, be they in cars, campervans or houses show them off and the next thing they are reporting is being vandalised . So that is my tip. Good show as usual.
Your reference to Grease was delightful! “We go together. . .” Please remember, your value is NOT measured by what/how much you accomplish each day. . . But instead by how much your puppies LOVE you! 😊 Great answers. . . Keep some things private. OH! Yes, talking to dogs is one of my hopes. Right now I talk for them, and sometimes I get it wrong.😂
Myself and my now husband were together 18 years before we got married, 7 years of that engaged. Just like you we spent our money on a house, holidays and fun stuff. However, we saved for a year and got married in Cyprus, wayyy cheaper than the UK. Got to say, I’m very happy we finally did it. 20 years together this month and it feels lovely to call him my husband.
I discovered your site a few months ago. What a pleasure! I have lived most of my life outside of my native country (US). I truly respect your adventureness (is that a word?) and will continue to follow your adventures. One request could add an episode # in your titles? It would help your viewers to follow your renovations.
Loved all your answers. I agree with all your decisions but one about not marrying. You’ve been together 15 years seems you are all in. So you said money and things came first. But trip to registers off is not much. You can have big party later or even big wedding. I worry if something happed to one of you if you aren’t married you can’t make certain decisions on the love one because you’re not married. Maybe it’s not like here in America. Just y’all seem so much right for each other. Y’all are doing right and it’s your anyway. Do it your way. ❤️❤️🙏🏻❤️❤️
Hi, love the way you both learn, action and review and stay positive. Don’t let anyone push you into changing anything including getting married. We’re 46 years very happily unmarried and why change a good thing? Just one tiny piece of advice, find some friends and take some regular time off for socialising with others and some time for you both too. Good luck with everything you lovely kids, hugs from sunny Bulgaria. xx
My beloved and I have been together for nearly 23 years and have never had a ‘proper’ argument. We have had words certainly, but neither of us can keep up the stern face for long. One of us eventually (after about 5 minutes) will say ” oi ! Put your face straight ” and then we just giggle. We are both in our 60’s !
I agree with so many other comments, please keep your living space private if you want to. Some things have to be. I absolutely LOVE your articles! They are my favorite of all articles I watch on utube. I watch them over and over like a favorite book or movie. I love Ricky’s desire for perfection and admire his eye for detail! Victoria, love to watch your gardening as it used to be one of my favorite things to do. Unfortunately I live in an apartment now. Look forward to your weekly articles !!! 🦮🐈❤❤
Cupboard doors open LOL I blamed my kids until they moved out then I realized how much I left the cupboards open. Haven’t a clue why but I’ve gotten much better at closing them.😊 I’ve seen people who are renovating live in tents, tents in barns, buses, caravans, one room of a very dilapidated building, a shipping container. You do what you can until you renovate and make a place livable it’s part of the process for most people no reason to be embarrassed. It often is motivation to get a project done though! Love your website keep up the good work.
Gosh some questions quite personal 😂 love your website and always look forward to every article 👌 my son and his fiance are an hour from Porto and absolutely love living in Portugal. Visa application for them was very easy as long as you follow the procedure. Only question is have you connected with any other ex pats ?
I think you’re perfectly within your rights to keep your home private. What I would like to see and perhaps you don’t have a drone so you can’t show it, but I’d like to see a layout of the farm. Where the house is in relation to the tiny house, that kind of thing. Where the fields are and so on. The question about Victoria’s fingernails reminded me that I always wonder how come she looks fresh as a daisy even after she’s worked hard gardening, or stone masoning. I’d be dripping sweat after 15 minutes of that kind of labor, lol. Does she stop and take a shower and redo her hair before every article? 😜
If you had had any “real” renovation experiences you might have decided that this was a “bridge too far”. But having now watched from day one I have to offer you my total congrats. Oh BTW, private if you wish, how much weight have either or both of you lost during the project. Yes this work is a total gym. Cheers for now.
You two are the most perfect couple, disagreements and all. Don’t let other people influence you. Rickey, good choice to want to work slower but have a better quality product in the end. This is your home, you will be happier having made that choice in the end. 15 years together,? why would you think to get married,? sometimes getting married after all those years for some reason breaks up a relationship. I never did understand why that happens. We all love you because of who you are, please don not change too much.
You do not have to explain why you are not showing the main house and do not have to apologise about the mess in it, that is natural and it is good to have some privacy to yourselves. Your answers were perfect and I am so glad the solar panels are now able to supply for everything you need to live on the property. Another lovely article and have a great week.
Don’t worry about showing us your private living space…….when you start renovating it we’ll see it then when it’s empty! Regarding the voles, I had a problem with them many years ago and I put children’s windmills and sticks with upturned plastic bottles on the top in the ground ….apparently the voles don’t like the vibrations. I’ve not seen any since.
For all the precision work you do theres really no need to show the house. Im pretty sure most of your effort is focused on the tinyhouse. I mean, who makes their own louvre shutters from scratch? Seriously? An who the heck casts their own concrete window sills? hahaha. Ya kinda piss me off going into such detail with everything because I would rush through it. Id have had both houses done by now. In a complete mess. haha.
OMG!! The private questions you are getting!! Do some people not have filters or manners?? I’m surprised you weren’t asked if you wear underwear or what side of the bed you sleep on!! May l just say to those people asking the questions to remember these people are not obligated to answer your questions. So think seriously about asking them. And leave their private lives alone!!
Concerning the greenhouse: Just something to consider, but if you take a peak at Martijn Doolard’s YT website, (recent articles), he found a group of old windows from I assume an antique or shop, and he’s put them together to form a greenhouse. It’s pretty sturdy and the glass will probably last a bit longer than the panels you are currently using. Although he is in the Italian Alps and you are in Portugal, I am unsure what your winters look like temp wise, but if it does get cold there, would be good protection for greenhouse veggies and flowers. But more for the sturdiness and longevity, is why I mention it. Just an FYI idea 🙂 Here is one article from his page on greenhouse: youtube.com/watch?v=JTsy7YE4YS4
