How To Tighten A Spigot That Leaks Outside?

To fix a water leak, tighten the packing nut in a clockwise direction, being cautious not to overtighten. Securely reattach the faucet handle and turn the water on again. If the spigot is leaking beneath the handle around the valve stem, tighten the bonnet or packing nut below the handle with a pair of channel locks. This will solve the problem half of the time.

If the spigot is leaking from the handle, the packing nut is either loose or worn out. Most leaky outdoor faucets can be repaired with a simple turn of the wrench. If the faucet still leaks after tightening the packing nut, replace the rubber washer on the end of the valve stem. First, tighten the retainer nut to see if that fixes the problem. If tightening the nut does not work, then remove the nut to fix the other issue.

The packing nut behind the handle keeps the water’s egress sealed off from the outside. Tightening this packing nut with ½ to ⅛ turn is the easiest way to fix a leaky faucet. If the faucet keeps dripping, tighten the faucet handle or knob with a screwdriver or socket wrench. If the faucet handle and packing nut are still dripping, use a properly sized wrench to undo the nut. There is a cartridge in there that will unscrew with a few threads. At the opposite end, there is a cartridge that will unscrew with a few threads.

In summary, fixing a water leak involves tightening the packing nut in a clockwise direction, reattaching the faucet handle, and replacing the rubber washer on the end of the valve stem.
