A loose door handle can be easily fixed using simple tools, depending on the age and style of your door’s lockset. To tighten a loose exposed set-screw doorknob, locate the set screw using a screwdriver or Allen key, loosen the set screw to remove the handle, and adjust the hidden chassis screws. This process only takes a minute to pop off the cover plate.
For models by Kwikset, Schlage, Yale, Defiant, Ezset, and Mortice lock sets, tighten the internal screws in the loose door knob or loose door handle. Use a screwdriver to twist the screws on both sides of the knob base clockwise. A loose door handle lowers the lockset’s mounting ring to the door, which generally runs all the way through the door.
To tighten a loose door knob, use a small flat head screwdriver and push in the clip, then pull off the knob. Take off the collar to reveal the screws. Use an awl or equivalent tool to depress the button and remove the inside handle. Unscrew the inside trim ring (lefty/loosey) to expose the screws.
To fix a loose door knob, determine the type of door knob, tighten the screws, secure the base plate, and check the door lock’s firmly secured position. Use a small diameter Phillips screwdriver to turn the screws on the inside of the door, adjacent to the knob, clockwise to tighten the doorknob.
