This might be happening in one small patch of Australia. Everywhere else the rampant clearing of trees has increased 300% in the past few years. The ‘greenwashing’ policies where people are paid not to cut down trees is a rort. This country is NOT improving. It is getting worse daily. Nice try. I live here. We are decimating this country. Down to less than 1% of biodiversity that was here when we arrived in 1778.
This is interesting for me to see as I grew up in the Coorow/Carnamah area not too far from Yarra Yarra salt lake. My father was a farmer, as were his two brothers and my brother. My father kept rainfall records from the 1920s. His records and those of the BOM suggest that rainfall averages have declined 10% to 20% since the 1960s, however there has been a Green revolution with wheat growing that has enabled crops to withstand drier conditions. BOM scientists say that rainfall will continue to decline about another 15% by the end of the century. It’s apparently something to do with Indian ocean temperatures. My father’s generation of farmer cut most of the vegetation away, not realising the water table was salty. His first house was moved as it was on what became a salty barren area with seasonal flood plain. Later in life he liked to propagate native plants and plant them along roadsides. By then the damage had been done and I suspect the policy of land development by the West Australian government during the 1960s may have added to the decline in rainfall. In areas west of Yarra Yarra, where the soil is sandy would have different and quite interesting vegetation.
Sorry, I live in Australia and I can confirm we do an appalling job with our forests. If it can be chopped down or dug up we’re in there with shovels and chainsaws. We get floods on the coast and droughts inland and we haven’t got the balls to get that water collected and moved inland. I love it here, but we suck up to the mining industry hard.

They take in CO2 and give off O2…Life…I have replaced native trees on my land after I had to remove many because of disease and parasitic plants. I love trees and live next to a wildlife/water area. Many species of waterfowl, birds, and 4 legged critters. My little piece of heaven. Also, I do not use chemicals or pesticides on my land.
Tree Farms or Tree Nurseries should be encouraged as businesses. I believe that a continuous supply of tree saplings would be beneficial to the entire continent. It’s always the same story. Every documentary starts with: There used to be forests that held the water table and created an ecosystem and influenced a positive climate. And then came deforestation, erosion, disappearing water tables, unbalanced ecology/climate. Which part of this development don’t we understand? There is no shortage of koalas in Oz. For example, there were tens of thousands of Koalas on Kangaroo Island, so many of them that they were destroying the native forests. They started talking about culling them but then the bushfires came along and did the job of culling them. The charities stepped in with their “save the Koala” campaigns, on the back of what happened on Kangaroo Island and have made millions out of these campaigns. Environmentalism, though taken seriously by some, is usually an opportunity for the scammers to step up.
Used up farmlands from industrial agriculture can renew itself by converting them into forests. I would recommend fruit bearing trees that can be still a source of simple produce…an edible food for livestock or cattle ranchers nearby… But I believe the Australian 🏜 deserts must be reduced as well… creating a “little jungle” in Australia would benefit the earth I believe… Besides..this jungle would definitely help in cloud 🌥 formation and induce precipitation…

Official data allows an estimate of the scale of the contrast: little more than two years of land clearing will effectively cancel out what the public is spending to avoid 125 million tons of carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere. The equivalent to what has been planted over several years in the 20 million trees program is wiped out in just six months of land clearing.
They should do a series on what is being done about the ancient deforestation in places like China, India and the Middle East. Those places had their forests decimated for fire, cooking, building and smelting metals a very long time ago. It would be nice to see them making a major effort on reforestation too.

Well,i think that the deseet should also be preserved. The eastern voast and Perth area and the northern darwin area should be more forested so that there is grassland still 1000 km away from the coast. Sorry to be cynical – perhaps it comes with age! I find these photos ( then and now) very deceitful. A proper scientific study would show the precise GPS location and date. If this transformation is so simple and rapid – what is stopping us from repeating this everywhere? Surely it can’t be money? Have we crossed the point of no return in terms of damaging the planet? There is no such point. We need to trust that our thought, which is our greatest quality, can change nature. We only need to understand the direction to which we should aim our thoughts. What should we think about? What condition or state should we aspire to and ask for? In order to save our planet, we should think about positive human connections. That is, how can we, in our connections, keep nature safe? How can we all together protect our world? If we truly wish to better our planet, then we should see people holding a concern for how to positively connect everywhere that we look. It has nothing to do with recycling or other activities that we commonly associate with as being sustainable. If we come closer to and consider each other, that we will reach an entirely organic, perfectly connected and round state, then the negative forces will disappear from the world. We need to understand that if we start thinking better about each other, then the planet will recover from all harm, because our thoughts are the strongest force in nature. Likewise, our negative thoughts about each other are entirely to blame for damaging the planet. That is why the more we recycle and invest in energies and activities that we commonly think of as being sustainable, the worse our planet becomes. Nothing will work to benefit us until we reach a state where our attitude changes toward each other for the better to protect and improve our planet.
They need to turn in up a couple dozen notches. The tree clearing is still out of control in the country areas. Even now days the vast number of station owners can’t seem to make the connection. Taking out the trees does not mean more room for grass to grow! It just means less rain and more soil erosion. Sigh.

This is good, but as long as cattle and sheep farming landowners continue to create monocultural crops and dairy and meat-producing factories, the story will continue as before. Besides there are some aspects of large-scale reforestation not understood properly. For example, if you plant an army of trees standing to attention like soldiers in a straight line for mile after mile, it does not make for diversity. A forest requires a diverse variety of trees, and most importantly it needs the under-story of scrub, grasses and bushes beneath the trees to make for a self-sustaining ecosystem. It is the grasses that trigger plant and bush growth which in turn allow trees to get established. It is also important to use large and heavy bull-dozers to dig ditches and swales to catch rainwater. This over time, replenishes ground water and brings up vegetation. A forest which has different kinds of trees growing on uneven ground creates small pockets of micro-climates encouraging the growth of little plants and grasses which bring back insects bees and birds. A forest with this diversity requires a long period of time to become a natural self-sustaining ecosystem.

man, this anti-meat message is just dumb. Meat animals are REQUIRED for regenerative farming. Ruminant meat is the ONLY food humans can eat to get 100% of the nutrients we need. Everything else requires supplementation, and guess why they push those methods. Ruminant animals will naturally maintain the land. The only thing you need to do is rotate them off so they don’t over graze and let the land go wild one year out of every 7. The plant farming going on is only for a very small percentage of our food supply, the rest goes to industrial uses…most of which we do not need either. It could be a bit of a tax dodge, as well a conservation effort. All State Governments should give up their environmental roles to the Feds so we have ONE rule/law for ALL Australians.
In WA no land may be cleared without special permissions from the government. And despite farmers only making up “2.5% of all employment”, without Australian farmers millions would lack food in the Middle East, and Asia and starve. It is great that replanting efforts are taking place, In fact all schools from where I grew up take part in a replanting program in which the children plant trees. However, Spreading this missleading information about farming, a vital service to humanity, cannot go overlooked. Since most people live in urban centres, there is a dangerous disconnect between those people and the reality of the precarious balance of keeping the third world from starving. When your only experience with getting food is driving to the grocery store and browsing the always stocked asiles, there can be no intuitive understanding of how much work goes into getting that food to their hands. Not to mention that so many emmisions stem from the intensive transport and storage of fresh products just so people can eat fruit and veggies that are out of season. Farmers are changing their methods, and I dare say that they are changing faster than the average clueless supplement-taking urbanite.

Given the tremendous fires they suffered back in 2019-’20, I say the Australians have a LONG way to go before Australia is effectively reforested and its already threatened-endangered species of flora and fauna make an effective comeback. And it can’t just be confined to deserts if they’re going to combat climate change – there’s also the shorelines, swamps, mountains, kelp forests in the Great Barrier Reef, not to mention converting the tops of major metropolitan areas (Sydney, Perth, Wellington, etc.) to open gardens and enclosed greenhouses to aid migrating bird populations. And while all those regions are being either reforested or newly forested, they need to enact stronger laws to protect all forested regions old and new from illegal farming practices, pesticide use, poaching and more!
If people would selectively log forests with mule power, there would be less damage. There is always dead standing timber that can be utilized, as well as trees which need to be thinned. Mules are very heat tolerant, have fewer health problems than horses and can live mostly off grass and browse. I would guess that poor management has resulted in agriculture being such a low percentage of GDP. Rotational grazing and cover crops can really increase productivity, but farmers would need help with initial investments in fencing and seeding cover crops. Hydraulic machines pulled by draft animals have a smaller carbon footprint with lower initial investment than tractors. Plus, the farmer can make money off breeding draft horses with donkeys to make mules or just raise mammoth donkeys. These animals produce tons of manure that can be composted and applied to pastures. Light grazing of forests by goats and donkeys can thin overgrowth. The donkeys can work and also protect livestock. Restoring forests is a great idea, but people need food. I hope Aussies will visit Horse Progress Days and import quality draft horses and mules, as well modern farm equipment powered by draft animals. Farm machinery is outrageously expensive, but buying horse pulled equipment from the Amish with modern features is affordable. Many Africans are adapting ideas from Horse Progress Days so they don’t have to import parts. Search for Horse Progress Days on You Tube and you will be amazed at the machines and low prices.

Now the government is knocking down state forests and koala habitats to put up wind turbines, they won’t build a dam for much needed water because a bird flew over that area 10 years ago, but they will mow down much needed forests for wind farms, guess who owns our water and power infrastructure…..yep China. Water storages. Australia has a lot of water. But they dont bring them into the desert. Politicians dont care about wasting those flood water. Those forest are burning faster than those trying to create new forest. In NSW for example? There are flood season in many area. Those are water that could be push back into those desert. That is on theory. In reality? Those coastal area should be forest instead of city and town. But as human? They choose places that easy for them to live and make money from. So that is the reason why those forest been destroyed to build their houses near the ocean and as the population rise they start to cut more forest to keep on farming. And as the result? Now most human in australia are living in area where they are facing flood when those flood water could be use to keep forest growing. In another word? If those politicians really care about australia as a whole? Those flood water could be push back into the desert by a giant water pump if they really want to keep on living in those flood area. But those pump will cost a lot of money. So the best is to re-create the dying land before need to buy new water pump. Rainfall in australia is funny? Because only where there is forest, the is rain. And australia is lack of many water pond and lakes. Just like the forest that re-created in this article. You dont see them dig a water pond just incase there is rain in the near future. If they keep on just growing tree but dont create new ponds. A fire could just clear those forest in 1 day.
They should make heaps of giant, multilevel warehouses filled to the brink with automated farming to grow every crop under the sun, all the spices, all the mushrooms. Build a huge desalination plant, run it all off renewable, ocean hydro, wind, solar ect. Build a massive fish farm combined with seaweed, mussels, oysters, scallops. Make a functional ecosystem farm as everything eats the fish poop It’ll create jobs for maintaining the machines, construction, reduce cost of raising animals, reduce the price of food to near nothing, yeild massive financial gain from exports, allow for the construction of new cites and possibly other benefits I can’t think of
I live in the USA. I see more and more hugh naborhoods and industrial parks going in with no land set aside for nature or for water reclamation. So all the water that hits those new concrete jungles runs straight in the creeks rivers and streams and cause millions of dollars in damage with flooding caused by not having enough water holding areas so that water can absorb back into the ground. I think for ever acre cleared for new buildings or subdivisions a certain amount of land should be set aside as Water Reclamation and wildlife sanctuary. Let’s say for every acre of land cleared 1/8 of an acre is set aside.
Is incredible how this country have the most assets avalible like Lands,Mineral,Diamonds,oil ect…. And the ilogic thing is that they have the most rich land ever existed and meanwhile they are poor wich is not logic because its suposed that they are the Richest country in the world but for the coruption and the Other Nations that want and figth for the assets they have and thats why they are Poor meanwhile some one is making a loot of money for the items that belong to Africa tho
Thank you – I’m from the UK and hadn’t realised it was that bad. Why should charities/the community have to pay ? Are the organisations that caused/are causing the damage being made to pay for it ? Monetising the damage seems to be the first step in a capitalist system. Then much of the current behaviour will become economically unviable and will stop.

interventions of this kind are the best he can do for his country, they are national investments of high importance! yes the cattle trails are well suited for the australian due to the huge size of its surface!! so she can expand as much as she wants and make for herself a continent of paradise! where you have green, expand it with your biodiversity corridors, make a giant spider’s web and let the animals live and make an Australian jungle just for fun!!! with such a relatively small effort, what work can be produced!! incredible value out of nowhere!!! until it rains, they will appear if they smell green and alive from below, there is no chance that they will get wet!! green and animals and become rich in a few decades even heavy logging timber you can cultivate! yes make the biodiversity corridors is the best thing you can do make it a national priority it is worth it from every point of view very small cost of intervention but sustainable investment of centuries
She be right,I am ok jack,not in my lifetime no easy answers here .those who know are dead or dying,taking things of importance with them .leaf minor,jarrah dieback management of the lands we need for catchment are drying up,its getting worse those in the know can see it what is a healthy balance,or is it too late,once water lived here,ski no more,a fragile environment at best upon arrival,those in the know see it everyday what is healthy balanced environments . With progress nothing stays the same. Changes for good and bad are achieved,those in the know understands this water use is getting more on a fragile environment the canopy has gone opening up the drying of the soils,leaf minor thrip, dieases of many species of understory gone,those in the know understands this there is no money to be made in the fixing of it so nothing of any great action get off the ground .so those in the know continue to watch it die,its picking up speed to moving closer to your area,if you have children and care for them and future generations,those in the know need to be heard actions not talk or lost in red tape,it will effect everything in its path,blame has no part in the plan difference of how why or how we veiw or believe things to be .true management not just signs and gates .those in the know understand,life is short and those in the. Australia developets it coastly areas and want to have it looking like Hong Kong this is where rainfall is to grow our food, Australia should be developing its centre for man to live all our farming should be near the coast where rain is then has no trouble to port to export pipette water to the centre of the country or build infrastructure, to build it sells its soul to other countries not lease sells..
The planet has actually greened significantly over the last few years. Not to diminish the efforts of hard working people, but the higher atmospheric carbon seems to make plants grow better. It seems hat there is a “Carbon cycle” that reacts similar to the water cycle, and the earth reacts to our biology just like any other. We are just recycling this carbon from millions of years ago. I’m more skeptical of CO2 emission policies than I was 20 years ago, particularly after the scandalous false advertising during the COVID outbreak. If big pharma can do it, the energy industry can as well. I think this greening effort is going to do far more to combat the effects of global warming than these efforts with batteries and so forth. They seem to do more harm than good. I also cant help feeling that all we need is one massive volcanic eruption somewhere in the world, and we will be all worried about global cooling!
The old system degraded our ecosystem. Sounds great on the surface. But what about the biodeversity of 60,000 years. It sounds like farming replacing farming, with indigenous people employed. All these boxes are being ticked, but something seems forced here. Is the land being forced to be economically viable in a different way? And to what expense of biodeversity. And what do the original custodians of that land feel about this new form orf development. Would be interesting to know.
I am British and visiting both Aus and NZ in 2015 I realised the amount of devastation we created when building the empire and including our massive Navy . The only solution is regenerative agriculture on a large scale . Persuading the likes of Trump in the USA and Bolsenaro ex pres in Brazil that it is vital to change tack Its not easy .The greed of Corporates and ignorance of our far right governments governmenrs is the main problem . LARGE scale tilling of massive areas of barren landscape with lack of biodiversity has been the problem . Persuding someone that just because weve been ploughing land for 10000 years doesnit make it right . Australua despite low rainfall could regenerate millions of acres of forest. native plants and trees, native fruits, how to protect the biodiversity ? that sounds good . a project in the middle east which turned to be successful and later abandoned, where the coordinators they first learned the local technique and methods of water harvesting and best possible trees for replanting and possibly a genius method where they decided in using an ancient inca method of tree planting . possibly some of the Israel methods as well in tree planting . possibly a friend ship project like the ” rare date project ” between the two countries …extreme weather resistant plants and, possibly some native medicina trees and plants in the thought might be helpful in the long run in this project .if all these are are well thought and planned good . in case of extreme weather conditions, forest fire? diseases etc how can modern man made forest deal with it . can online cheap fire resistant, heat resistant drones ……. ( one possible way I think like using the ocean plastic to build these drones ) giving a thought to the animal kingdom, food, shady water streams would add value to the project in the long run …….
