How To Repair Fading Wood On Walls Outside?

Sun fading can occur in two ways: when the finish separates from the wood and when the fibers become bleached. To repair sun-faded wood walls, follow these steps:

  1. Apply a wood primer to resist fading and chipping. Most primers take 2-6 hours to dry to the touch, and after 12 hours, the primer is ready for a follow-up coat. Avoid handling the wet primer.

  2. Make necessary repairs to the wood trim. Use wood putty and a putty knife to fill in any cracks or holes.

  3. Peel or flaking coating. The main cause of peeling or flaking coatings is lack of sufficient preparation before applying products. Silvery-grey timber fibers are a sign of this issue.

  4. Clean the wood to restore its original luster. Use an oil soap like Murphy’s soap to remove built-up grime and dust. Mask doors, windows, or other openings with plastic before scrubbing, scraping, and sanding. Sand the spackled areas once dry and paint another coat of primer.

  5. Inspect your home for peeling, cracking, or fading. If waiting for color to even out doesn’t work or takes too long, consider a Plan B or Plan C and D. Start with a clear finish with a sheen similar to your walls.

  6. Clean the wooden furniture piece. If necessary, paint stripper if necessary. Sand the body of the piece and the tricky areas of the piece. Sand the entire thing back to the original wood tone.

  7. Use a restore product from Benjamin Moore store. Seal with a stain, not varnish or urethane, using a gentle cleaning solution and a soft brush or pressure washer on a low setting to avoid damaging the siding’s finish.

  8. Clean your siding once or twice a year. Apply a fresh coat of paint, replace it, and avoid facing sprinklers. Fading is a common issue of exterior paint but can be easily avoided by using high-quality paint, consistent washing, and choosing a lighter shade.
