How To Install Radio Wiring Inside?

This guide explains how to connect wire to speakers for your car or home stereo, amplifier, or AV receiver. It covers various steps such as gathering information, disconnecting the battery, removing the old stereo, identifying the wiring harness, matching the wires, connecting the wiring harness, and attaching the speaker wires. If your system has less than 75 watts of output, you can run all the speaker wires from the amp to the wiring harness in the dash behind your stereo.

To run larger speaker wire into your doors for aftermarket speakers, gather tools and supplies, connect the wiring, mount the stereo, test the wiring, and finish finishing touches. There are several options for running speaker wire and audio/video cables through the walls in your home, including running thin speaker wires glued to the ceiling, using plastic raceways, or fishing inside the real ceiling and dropping cables underneath the rug/couch and up the wall.

The best solution is to drill holes in each corner of the room and run the wire underneath the house/floor. In the attic, find the pilot hole/wire coat hanger and drill a hole for the speaker wires in the center of the wall stud next to the pilot hole. Seal up the hole when running the wire back there and use existing room décor, such as posters or artwork on the walls, to route speaker cables to surround speakers behind them. Drill the inside wall carefully, stop the drill, slide the bit in until it touches the outer wall, and check that it is still square to the wall.

How do you run cables in solid walls?

To install cables on a wall, use clips or plastic trunking to route them along skirting boards and around door and window frames. For a neat finish, conceal them. In a solid wall, cut a channel in plaster and run the cable through an oval plastic conduit or top-hat capping. Run the cable vertically to a fitting in the wall, plan the route using a spirit level or plumb line, and check it with a cable detector. Wearing gloves and safety goggles, cut the channel 6mm wider than the conduit or capping, cutting away to the depth of the conduit and about 3mm.

Cut the plastic capping or conduit to length with a hacksaw and feed in the cable. Capping is fixed to the wall with masonry nails, conduit snaps into clips nailed to the wall, or can be held with masonry nails driven in each side. The cable will be held firm by the plaster when filled the channel.

How do you hide a bunch of wires on the wall?

In order to conceal wiring within a wall, it is first necessary to utilise a stud finder in order to identify a suitable location between two studs. Once this has been determined, the wall should be marked for the placement of upper and lower holes. The next step is to attach a drywall hole saw bit to a power drill, insert cords through one of the hole covers, and then push them firmly into place.

Where do wires typically run in walls?

Wires can run parallel to the floor or vertically, running up to the stud. To pinpoint a precise location, use a stud finder. Electric stud finders can find metal and wood studs by sensing wall density changes, while magnetic stud finders detect metal beams, pipes, and nails. Most models are straightforward to use, with LEDs that light up when a stud is found and push buttons to activate the device. Place the finder against the wall, press the buttons, and slide it along the area until the stud is located.

How to run home theater wires in a wall?

To run cabling in a wall, bend one end 180 degrees to navigate insulation or obstacles. Tape the speaker cable to the other side, pull it back through, and prepare for problem-solving. This is usually easy and usually possible. If using in-wall or in-ceiling speakers, cabling may need to be run in the walls to access the electronics. Familiarize yourself with wall framing diagrams for guidance.

How to hide speakers in a wall?

In-wall speakers can be installed by creating openings in the wall and enlisting the services of a qualified professional to install the necessary wiring. Subsequently, the speakers are installed using a mounting bracket, and the grates are painted to match the wall color.

How do you run wire through an interior wall?

This text provides instructions on how to add or extend an electrical circuit in drywall. It explains that the process is relatively easy if you have a basic understanding of electrical work. However, the challenge lies in fishing the wires through finished walls. During major remodeling projects, drywall can be removed and cables can be run through studs and ceiling cavities. However, in some cases, removing drywall is not practical or desirable and is often messy and expensive.

Despite this, it is possible to add or extend circuits in finished walls without destroying the walls or putting oneself through an enormous ordeal. This process is also used when old wiring is replaced with new cable during system upgrades. The process is similar to adding or extending circuits in unfinished basements or attics.

What do you use to pull cables through a wall?

To guide cables through a wall, feed a fish tape through the wall plate to the hole in the wall. Uncoil the fish tape and slowly feed the hooked end into the hole in the drywall. Gently push it through the wall until it reaches the drilled hole. Ask a helper to look for the other end of the fish tape. Secure the wires to the end of the fish tape with electrical tape, overlapping 6 inches (15 cm) of the wire with the end of the fish tape. Wrap the electrical tape around the two ends, ensuring smooth tape to allow the cable to slide past obstacles and drilled holes.

How to pull audio cable through a wall?

Speaker wire is a low-voltage component that does not necessitate the use of specialized tools or pose a fire hazard. To facilitate the passage of the wire through the drywall, it is necessary to create an opening and then utilise a straightened coat hanger. It is not necessary to utilize a long bit in order to drill through both sides simultaneously.

How to rewire a house without removing drywall?

An electrician can rewire a house without removing significant portions of drywall using advanced methods like “fishing” wires through existing walls and ceilings, utilizing access points like outlets and light fixtures. This approach minimizes disruption to the home’s aesthetics and reduces the need for extensive drywall repair or replacement. While electricians primarily focus on electrical work, they may offer drywall repair services as part of their offerings.

They may make small openings in the drywall to access wiring and patch or seal these openings once the rewiring is complete. For larger drywall repair tasks, homeowners may need to hire a separate contractor specializing in drywall repair or renovation. Rewiring a house involves updating electrical wiring to meet current safety standards and accommodate modern electrical needs. The process begins with a thorough assessment of the existing wiring and electrical system, followed by the removal of old wiring, installation of new wiring, and updating electrical fixtures, outlets, and switches.

  • So many people complain that butt connectors and scotch locks are a poor way to join the wire’s, but I am here to tell you that I’ve not had one problem using these two methods. Using the correct tool for crimping is the trick to doing a professional job. Stop buying cheap tools is another reason why some wire connections fail. I had an Alpine head unit for 15years in a truck using scoth-locs, not a single problem with wiring connections. Yes you can solder the wire’s but just takes longer to do the job.

  • Hi i Recently fitted some premium speakers into my car, and I have an android head unit that I ordered from eBay the sounds were playing just fine with the headunit untill it stopped working n the fuse blew and smoke started coming from the head unit i went back on ebay n have seen that the wiring harness is not compatible with Premium, aftermarket speakers what shall i do ???can i get a harness that is compatible??

  • Mark Nichols Thanks for all the great articles. I am about to start on a radio upgrade on my 2001 Ford Excursion XLT and have watched your related articles. However, the recommended Metra 70-1771 harness has only a single 16 pin plug. The 2001 excursion has a second plug and wiring harness which plugs into a port on the back of the factory radio identified as an amp but actually runs to the back of a center console rear speaker controller. I believe if this is not connected, the rear 4 speakers will not function. Please advise as to a solution and/or can you identify the correct Metra harness. I have looked at their website but they identify only the 70-1771 part number.

  • First of all I want to say thank you for showing how to do that. I wish you would have shown the whole thing one by one. Anyways I don’t understand why people don’t like to solder the wires together where I live they told me nobody does that. I wish you lived in my town. I wish you would do another one I bought a Kenwood aftermarket stereo for my truck and I’m trying to figure out how to do the wiring harness bra not to cut no wires seems pretty difficult but perusal your article looks pretty easy but I’m scared. LOL. I wish you would do another one but do any choir where we can see how you do it. Thank you very much.

  • I think I did it mostly right with my car (2007 Pontiac Vibe). There are some wires though that are questionable: blue to blue/white, orange to orange/white, and purple to pink purple/white. I am questionable about those wires. Will it do anything funky to the radio since they weren’t exactly alike? Other than that, I am pretty sure I did it right the best I can. If not, then I will just need to get a different kind of stereo wire for my vehicle.

  • i just installed a pumpkin 10.0 D Din my chevy colorado. Have you ever hard of a pink wire called back car? The stereo only came with user manual, and just a diagram on the stereo. I was wondering what that wire was for? I thought it might be for reverse but its not. I had few wires left over like SWC Brake and power att. The harness I had vss speed dimmer power att illumination and. I need to fix illumination. I have no lights on the buttons. I cant see them at night. I hooked up a orange wire in the harness call dash light. So i got to fix that still. Let me know if you have and info that could help me out. Thanks!

  • Where can I get a harness for my 04 gmc envoy that has, Onstar, Bose,(for now), chimes, and steering wheel controls. Sonic has several, but none of them do everything you need. Always 1 or 2 things missing so you have to buy extra harnesses to get everything to work. Can’t believe this can be so messed up.. R

  • Hoping to get a response soon.. Please read thoroughly 🙏🏼 👍🏼 Hi appreciate your article alot it’s very helpful. Help!! 2004 camry harness(jbl) So I bought a harness to connect/bridge to the vehicle harness and stereo harness. Bridge harness has 6 brown wires I don’t know where they go. No instructions were with the bridge harness. On the bridge harness, these wires ended up not getting connected: : (Orange)(x6-brown wires) Then.. On the stereo harness, these wires ended up not getting connected: : (pink&pink/black)(x2-orange/black) (x2-blackground)(brown-labled) Trying to mimick the picture into words. Stereo: Bridge to Vehicle: Yellow. Yellow. Black. Black. Red. Red. Blue. Blue.(marked- antenna) White. White. Wht/Blk. Wht/Blk. Gray. Gray. Gry/Blk. Gry/Blk. Purple. Purple. Prpl/Blk. Prpl/Blk. Black(x2) Sent from my phone on YouTube app. Hopefully I expanded well enough but definitely tried to 😅

  • Do I need a Meastro data link harness system for my 2007 Ram with a double DIN unit (Kenwood) if the Ram doesn’t have steering wheels radio controls, doesn’t have climate controls run from the head unit. It has separate knobs or no tire pressure TSPM on wheels? Or will just a harness adaptor be fine ? Even if it has Android Auto i believe that works from the phone app.

  • Ok I am really hoping that you can help me out with something. The adaptor that I am using has a blue/white wire which is labeled REM OUT. The radio harness has a blue wire. I saw that you connected the blue/white wire to the blue wire but they both run to the micro bypass. If I don’t need a micro bypass do I simply wire the two together or do I cap them off and not use either of them?

  • Good day. Thank you for the article. Do you have one on connection/installing aftermarket amp and stereo. I’m still a bit confused. Do I need to make a t-connection with the factory wiring and the radio harness or do I seal off the speaker coming from the harness and go from stereo/RCA/amp/factory wiring?
