How To Create Butterflies To Decorate Cakes?

This tutorial demonstrates how to create 3D fondant butterflies for cakes, adding an extra wow factor. The process involves using a simple cutter and rice paper butterflies, which can be made transparent or opaque. The tutorial also covers making gumpaste butterflies, which can be added to cakes.

To create the butterflies, color the fondant and roll it out to about 1/8 inch thick. For those new to working with fondant, a full post on fondant 101 is provided.

To create wafer paper butterflies, print an image of butterflies onto regular printer paper and trace the butterflies using coloring pens. Fold the baking paper in half to create a crease down the center, then pipe one side of the butterfly onto the paper. Gently rub the chocolate on the paper.

To make the butterflies, you will need wax paper or parchment paper, a paper towel roll, a sheet of thin cardboard or cardstock, and a piping bag with a narrow, round nozzle. These edible butterflies can be used as decorations for cookies, cupcakes, cakes, and desserts.

  • Great tutorial! I’m really thankful when artists, such as yourself, share their techniques. I have a pastry degree, and have done a lot of cakes and desserts for people, however, I have not worked much with wafer or rice paper. Life is really busy right now and I was going to suck it up and order wafer paper butterflies online for the baby shower cake I’m doing for my daughter. I thought it would make things easier. The shipping (for a piece of wafer paper!) was more than the cost of the sheet of butterflies! Seriously, $25 for a sheet of printed butterflies, that I had to cut out and do all the things with. On top of that, the colors were not what I wanted, but I was going to try to make it work (by not using most of the product that I ordered). After perusal your tutorial, I’m confident that I can make exactly what I want. Thank you!
