How To Create An Office In A Guest Bedroom?

In this DIY makeover, Sara Toufali shares her tips on creating a multi-purpose room in your home, which can serve as both a home office and a relaxing retreat for guests. She highlights the importance of adding bohemian touches to create a calming space. The Ultimate Guide to putting together guest bedrooms offers advice on small guest bedrooms, decor, paint, and office/guestroom combos.

To create a guest bedroom and home office combo, consider using a murphy bed, a bedside table or desk, or an antique desk or table. This versatile space can accommodate a shared home office for two with a sofa bed and a workout space.

To create a multipurpose office guest room, start by sketching on a yellow note pad with various options such as Murphy beds, sleeper sofas, and daybeds. You can also transform a spare bedroom into a workspace and guest room combo. A simple and bright home office in natural colors with a large desk, rattan chair, and grey couch can be a great addition to any home.

In summary, creating a multi-purpose room in your home can be a rewarding and practical solution for those who lack space for a dedicated office. By following these tips and creating a cozy, calming space, you can create a comfortable and functional home office that caters to your needs.

How to style a guest bedroom office?

In order to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a home office, it is recommended that the following modifications be considered: the addition of decorative finishes such as paint or wallpaper, the incorporation of window treatments to enhance comfort and color, the installation of an area rug or throw pillows, the addition of open shelving for books and decor, the adorning of walls with photography, art, or objects, and the incorporation of greenery.

How do I make my guest bedroom functional?

To provide extra storage in a guest room, consider using storage ottomans, daybeds, bunkbeds, or beds with storage drawers. These can double as movable seating and provide a place to store linens and guest-related items. Consider adding a small mirror, dresser, or accent chest for TV, clothing, and other items. A functional bedside table is also essential for guests. A decorative locking cabinet can be added for valuable or breakable items.

When guests stay at someone else’s house, they can enjoy comfortable, personal amenities. Add pillows, blankets, and other cozy accessories to add personality and a relaxing vibe. Include a television for convenience and have fun with your décor to make guests feel at home. By incorporating these storage solutions, you can create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for your guests.

How to make a home office in a one bedroom?

Hallways in one-bedroom apartments can be used as a home office by stowing a compact desk or using a hanging shelf for your desktop or laptop. However, this space may not be suitable for desk decorations. To fill this gap, transform the blank wall behind the desk into a work of art by purchasing paintings or photographs from thrift stores. Lay the wall decor on the floor and hang your collage on the wall, creating an at-home art show. A padded stool can be purchased to keep the hallway functional and tie the colors of the art wall together with a decorative pillow. Remember not to slouch when using the stool.

Which direction should a guest bedroom be placed?

Vastu principles suggest that guest rooms should be located in the north west and built above the kitchen in villas or bungalows. The north west is ruled by Vaayu, or the unpredictability of Vaayu, which is associated with unexpected guests, socializing, and festive occasions. However, modern apartments may not have such conditions. Sinha recommends warm, hospitable rooms painted in pastel colors, decorated as if they were hotel suites. Small comforts, such as thick blackout curtains, an electric kettle, or a mini bar, can make a significant difference in making guests feel at home.

How to divide bedroom and office?

A room divider is a useful tool for creating a sense of separation between a sleeping area and a dedicated workspace. Its slats create an airy and open atmosphere, allowing natural light to filter in from the bedroom window and desk area, giving the bedroom a light, bright look and avoiding eye strain. While the divider in the photo is attached to a low-profile structural wall, a standalone room divider can save space and provide flexibility for future room layout changes.

How to make the most of a spare bedroom?

A spare room is a luxurious space that can be transformed into a multi-functional office or gym. It can be used for overnight guests or as a space for a multi-purpose office or gym. Designer Rita Konig suggests that guest bedrooms are the most liberating to design, as they don’t have to be something you will not tire of. When designing your spare room, consider your lifestyle, home habits, and the physicality of the room. For smaller spare rooms, be bold with color and pattern, while larger rooms should feel like a beautiful bedroom where guests feel comfortable and at home.

When decorating a spare room, treat it as your own, so guests can relax and feel at home. Consider what you need in your own room and replicate it on a smaller scale for guests. Consider features like black-out drapery, bookshelves, artwork, and calming colors. If size is an issue, consider installing beds with built-in storage, sectioning curtains for added privacy, and open clothes storage such as hooks or hanging rails instead of bulky wardrobes.

In summary, a spare room is a versatile space that can be transformed into a multi-functional office or gym, or a cozy space for guests to relax and feel at home.

  • Alternative tip: placing mirrors strategically can help even out lighting for article calls. For example: if you have your desk light on one side of your desk (and so one side of your face is more lit than the other) you can place a mirror across from that (not in the frame of the article call but on the side – they still shouldn’t see it) so it can reflect that light onto the other side of your face. (This tip coming from a glasses wearer who can’t put her light right in front of her face because of the glare 🤓😅)

  • Kiva, thank you for your wonderful ideas! Can you recommend any solution to hide the wifi lights in my guest room? I live in a 16th Century Chateau in Belgium so I can’t move the location of the box they installed but I hate thinking that the lights might keep my guests awake. (Red light on Power Strip, Blue lights on WiFi box). Help?
