To replace an interior microwave light bulb, follow these steps:
- Remove the bulb from the microwave.
- For incandescent lamps, gently push inward and turn counter-clockwise.
- For halogen lamps, pull straight out.
- Replace the old light bulb with a new bulb of the same type and wattage.
- Replace the lamp compartment cover and vent grille.
- Plug in the microwave.
- Reconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet or disconnect power to the microwave at the circuit break or fuse before changing the light.
Many over-the-range microwaves have halogen lights, which can be replaced by following these steps. For specific instructions for replacing interior and/or surface lights, consult the manual.
Remove all screws and the wrap around the microwave, including the outer cover, to access and replace the cavity lamp.
The interior light on a GE Profile under-counter microwave is not necessary for the microwave to function. To access the light bulb, unplug the microwave, remove the vent grille or vent cover, and look for a lamp compartment cover.
Remove the entire outer shell to access the light bulb. Unplug the microwave and remove all screws coming in from the LED bulb. On some older models, you can remove the bulb by pushing it in and turning 1/4 turn.
In summary, replacing an interior microwave light bulb requires a simple process that involves removing the bulb, replacing the lamp compartment cover, and reassembling the microwave.

Replace/Change General Electric Microwave G8 lightbulbs – Inside (Top) and Range hood (Bottom) for GE Model …
Purchased a GE microwave last year. Not sure why, but all the bulbs were incandescent. There was only one bulb for the underside cooktop – I replaced that with an LED (wish there was two bulbs there – looks like there was room for two but not cut out and wired for it. Going to get this bulb for the internal as well. – Thanks and good article.
Thank you for making this article. There’s not that much information online about how to change the internal light bulb. When I was a copywriter I wrote scripts for lots of educational and instructional articles so I appreciate what a good job you did on this one. I especially appreciate that you paid attention to the order of the steps in the process. It sounds like a simple thing, but too many how-to articles start the process, get a few steps in, and then say, “Oh, by the way, you have to do this first.” I hate that! For example, the part about wearing a glove to handle the bulbs is critical and you put that step right up front before starting the process. Thanks!
Thank you for this article! It’s not my model but I was able to find where the inside light bulb is from your article. Almost ashamed to say that I’ve lived in my apartment for almost 6 years not even noticing the inside of my microwave did not have a light. I just ordered the bulb and I’m looking forward to having the visual warning of a possible explosion of melting better. 😂
My 2005 GE Spacemaker MW specifies a 20W halogen bulb, so check the Owners Manual. It is usually around page 35-37. It is also important to remove all fingerprints and oils off the bulb with an alcohol wipe before turning it on. Some bulbs come in a plastic wrap to use as a sock as you install it. Between the two (wrong wattage and oils) they can cause premature burn-out.
Why did you skip your efforts to install the bulbs? I tried replacing these bulbs and they will not go back in. I thought I had the wrong size because the first one snapped sideways and broke. No matter how careful I am they will not go back into the sockets. This article did not help. When you were installing the bulbs you fast-forwarded how you got it to go in all three times.
