How To Fix The Mkiv Jetta Inside Door Handle Latch Cable?

The video by 1A Auto provides step-by-step instructions on how to remove, install, or replace a broken, snapped, rusted, or jammed door latch cable. It is applicable to the 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 VW GTI models. The front inner door handles on the Mk4 Jetta incorporate window switches, outer mirror switches, and lock buttons into a complete assembly. Over time, the plastic bits can wear out, and the handle may not be functional.

To fix the door latch release cable without replacing it, use a small pick to unhook the cable from the handle. The video also shows how to replace the front inside door handle on the 00-05 Volkswagen Jetta, using two screws in the side of the door. With the cable removed, you can easily take the cable off and replace it.

In the case of installing armor door plates on a S@ 16v Scorocco, the cable clip can be removed from the door handle and pulled out and reinstalled to remove the slack on the cable. Loosen and remove the Phillips head screw (green arrow) and note the mounting channel for the cable (yellow arrow). These can snap over time, leaving the cable loose.

With the lock assembly loose, swing it toward you to undo the door latch cable. This cable opens the door when the inner door handle is used. To remove both inside and outside panels, remove the long cable for the inside latch handle to lock actuator and the short outside handle cable to…

  • Thank you so much for this article. I could no longer open the door of my 2004 Passat from the inside. I ordered a new cable, and your instructions enabled me to get the whole job done well. It is all in working order and I saved a few hundred bucks. Thanks especially for the closeups of attaching things to the new locking mechanism. I did not replace mine, but I had to attach the new wire and the lock indicator came loose and had to reattach it.

  • 7:48 Be really careful with T-25 and T-27 torx. The bit should fit really tight in the fastener. It’s very easy to use a T-25 bit in a T-27 fastener and round it out as you apply torque. I always keep the T-27 nearby when I’m dealing with T-25 fasteners, and see if it wants to fit, because it’s easy to get fooled.

  • Great article Paul!! Looks like I might be replacing this, my MKIV R32 drivers side door will not lock if I use my Key fob! If I use the key fob the alarm will set, However the drivers side door will not lock. If I physically put the key in and lock it that way the alarm will set and the door is locked! So I am assuming that this door lock module is bad.

  • have an issue and maybe you know how to solve it, it is a 2001 mk4 TDI driver side door that would unlock using a fob but won’t lock using a fob. it would lock using a fob, only if I unlock it and lock it within a second, same situation happens inside the car, with 2 buttons near the inside door handle. any ideas, or suggestions?

  • Wondering if i have the same issue. my key (not key fob) locks my doors immediately but will not unlock my door on the first try. I have to turn the key multiple times and eventually it opens. The actual door lock feels loose when turning and I’m trying to figure out which component i need to replace

  • Thank you for the article. Your instructions were spot on. I had a more difficult time removing the lock cylinder than you for some reason. I think I was afraid to loosen the screw too much. I had to back it off quite a few turns before the cylinder pulled out. I watch from the inside to make the the screw wasn’t about to pull out of the hole. I also had a little trouble with the electrical connector. Other than those two items it was pretty easy.

  • Here’s a question for you all, how do you open the passenger door without damaging the door or taking the door panel off when the door latch is broken in the locked position, meaning the door cannot be opened from either the inside or outside, it can be done as the garage where my mate took his 2011 Jetta they have done it

  • Great article! Your article is the very best I’ve found. I could not have disassembled and reassembled the door panel to gain access to the lock actuator without this article; Thanks! I have an issue with my 2005 Jetta TDI MK4; my two front doors are not electrically locking and unlocking; inside buttons on either door do not work nor does the keyfob (only front door locks are affected – the rear door locks function OK with keyfob and drivers door unlock button). I have to use the actual key to unlock and lock the drivers door – which will turn on and off the alarm system OK. And the pqssenger door, I have to use the inside ‘handle’ to unlock and open the door and then to lock it have to push the small knob near the window down. I haven’t had any of the ‘random’ symptoms that some talk about. When I open each door, the bottom light comes on, as it should. Again, the only way to unlock the front doors is to use the key inserted into the lock in the driver’s door and rotate it so the door will unlock (also only way to lock the driver’s door is using the mechanical key and rotating it). Once the driver’s door is unlocked, to unlock the passenger door one has to reach across the seats and pull on the inside handle. I did rip apart the passenger door and was able to get across contacts #1 & 2 (of the door lock assembly) with 12vdc and verified the lock motor did work, and in both directions. I was going to replace the door lock assemblies, but not sure that’s the problem. Another piece of info.

  • My door lock will not always turn on the alarm or turn it off either. What’s annoying is when it does not turn off the alarm before I try to get in. If I can’t get it to disarm, it sets off the alarm. Since mine is an old MK4, and I don’t want to spend the money or time on it, is there a simple way to just disconnect the alarm?

  • So my wife broke the assembly and the key was stuck in the forward position the car honked three times ever since i was able to remove the Assembly from inside the door and use a screw driver to lock and unlock the door but only cause the cylinder slid out with my key still attached Hahaha but now my car seems to lock but the anti theft light isn’t blinking anymore>??

  • My inside door handle keeps slipping (looses tension) when I try to open from inside (outside works fine). Works for few times then looses all tension again. This happened after I replaced window regulator. Is there way to anchor the inner door cable so it won’t loose/stretch from opening door from inside? I was thinking of advancing inner door cable further behind regulator panel then taping it down?

  • I recently bought a 1999 Jetta and the previous owner installed keyless entry and removed the lock on the driver side door so you have no way of opening the car if the battery goes flat as you have no lock to insert your key into. Can I get a lock like in this article, install it and not have to carry around a spare set of keys? Can I continue to use my original Jetta key that I use for the trunk and ignition?

  • Hi DAP. I cant find any articles related to my problem with my Jetta, can you help? i have a 97, and the dome lights, sunroof do not work, but buttons for windows are fine. i am really having the problem with the driver side door not setting alarm on when locked manually (no key fob) it can lock, but when door opens, the alarm goes off, leaving me to turn it off by the opening the trunk. in other words, when locking doors manually, all open doors wont lock, and windows (if opened) wont shut at once. only driver door locks but alarm will sound. other doors have to be opened manually from the inside. i did undo the battery terminal to see if that would do, it only resets my clock each time i start the car.

  • Hi there I was wondering if you can help me I have a Jetta4 1.6 2002 model the problem I have is the interior motion sensor works one day and the next it does not work I have replaced the switch on the driver side, inside post that turns the sensor on or off and I have replaced the interior light switch that holds the circuit board for the interior sensor, is there anything else it could be, thanks Juan

  • hello DAP, I just bought a 99 jetta gls. ive got the car to start but i have to unhook the battery before i turn it on or else the alarm will go off and wont start. I just got the car on the first of January. the guy i bought the car from replace the driver door lock but it uses a different key then the ignition key. I cant look my driver door at all from the outside of my car.

  • Hi DAP problem I have is the puddle light stays permanently on even after I close the door/start and drive away, so car always thinks “passenger door open” and beeps every time you move away from still. This also stops interior lights working when removing key after journey. Will it still be the switch in the module being jammed or something . Will a new module fix this issue or shall I clean the switch in the existing module? Regards.

  • My 2000 Jetta will immediately auto lock all the doors and arm the alarm whenever the driver’s side door is closed. Also the driver side door no longer unlocks with the key cylinder or click button and makes a buzzing noise when I click the button to unlock. The key gets stuck in the lock cylinder so I no longer can use the key. Would replacing the lock actuator fix the click button issue? Once replaced should this still work with the click button on my original key? Please advise.

  • The grace and peace be with you from the lord your God our father and his son Jesus, thank you, but how many of you know about the good news repent and believe in the gospel because the kingdom of heaven is at hand and crack your word the Bible, and continue blessing you! • Hello, great article! Question: my 2003 jetta has the opposite problem where if I open and close a door, the internal light will not turn off. I assume this again is an issue with the door latch assembly and the internal microswitches, or am I off base on this? Also, any reliable way to diagnose which door latch is causing this?
