How To Accelerate The Closing Of An Anderson Glass External Door?

This article provides instructions on how to adjust the closing speed of a screen and storm door by adjusting a Phillips head screw on a pneumatic door closer. To achieve faster closing speed, turn the adjustment screw to the left (counterclockwise) or the right (clockwise). Test the door, open it, let it close after each adjustment, and adjust the screw further as needed until the desired speed is achieved.

To change the tension of your storm door closer, locate the tension adjustment screw on the end of the door closer and turn the screw clockwise to tighten. Open the door all the way and let it close, then note the speed at which the storm door closes. Use a Phillips screwdriver to turn the adjustment screw on the top closer at 1/4 turn.

A change in temperature may affect the storm door closing speed, such as if the temperature drops, the storm door may close more slowly. To adjust the closer speed, turn the screw counter-clockwise (or unscrew it) or raise the sweep. If these options do not affect the speed of the door, the closer should be adjusted to allow the rod to retract back into the closer cylinder.

In summary, this article provides guidance on how to adjust the closer speed on single and dual closers, as well as links to written guides for adjusting the closer speed on single and dual closers.

  • My screen door started slamming progressively more over the past few weeks/months. I thought my air cylinder needed replacing. With your instruction and 20 seconds later, I adjusted the screw at the end of the cylinder and now the door closes smoothly and no longer slams. Thank you for posting the article and saving me a trip to Home Depot! Cheers!

  • I just wanted to know how to adjust my Larson storm door so there’s not a gap in the top where rain comes in. This article was not the article I was looking for. You should edit the title to be “Adjusting A Storm Door Closer” so people know what they are about to watch. I feel like I wasted my time (just like I’m wasting my time writing this comment).

  • I had a similar problem with a different cause and different solution- perhaps it might help others. Door wouldn’t close right- not catching. I tried filing as shown in this article but that didn’t work. Then I thought that the moving part (I don’t know the names of the parts) wasn’t going far enough into the “rectangular thing”. So, I thought that maybe if I raise the “thing” a bit- maybe it’ll close correctly. Then I had to ponder what to put under the “thing” to raise it. Anything soft would get squeezed once I tightened the screws. So, I had some old credit cards. I cut one into little squares. I thought that maybe a thickness of 3 of those might be about the right distance to raise the “thing”. So, put I 3 squares just above each of the 3 screws- then tightened them. Voila! Closes perfectly now! So, your solution didn’t work for me- but thanks- because perusal it got me to tackle the problem. I’m not particularly handy with home repairs except for very simple problems. I just have little experience. I wish when younger- those college years I worked summers in a paper mill- I should have worked with local tradesmen. I think 3 months with a carpenter- 3 with a plumber and 3 with an electrician- would have helped this old nerd!

  • My Larson door has a foot pedal like yours on the bottom cylinder of the storm door however my locking pedal has moved to the side from the top of the closer. Each time the storm door closes the pedal touches the house door and then each time the storm door is opened, the storm door locks back. Is there a way to move the locking pedal back to the top of the cylinder? Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Hi, this adjustment seems to slow the final stage of the door close (right as the door is latching), but I need help adjusting the initial swing (right as the door is released). No matter how much I tighten the screw, the door shuts very quickly and then abruptly stops and starts bouncing until it eventually latches. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Good didactic article. Though I have another issue, I hope you can help me. There’s an outer profile, I guess to keep the wind even more from getting in or for a esthetic purpose. Is there a way to take that apart without destroying it or making the door look bad? Actually, to put it on the other side?

  • I had a heavy duty screen door installed from Lowe’s and they claim the closing mechanism cant actually allow my door to open all the way (it can open about another foot and a half), they said the closing mechanism would fail if it opened any more… does that sound right? The door is a Titan security screen door… I don’t remember having this issue with any of my other houses and the installer already messed up the pump installation to begin with so I can’t trust that they are giving me the whole truth.

  • I installed a new Larson storm door and it shuts good, the problem is that when it’s latched there is about 1/8″ of play between the latch and striker plate, the wind causes the door latch to bounce back and forth against the plate and it’s noisy. I know I can put a piece of wood in the striker plate recess and take up the play but I’m wondering if there’s a better way to do it or some kind of a kit?

  • Any ideas on how to adjust the screen slider? The up/down slide action worked fine for months, and now, even though I slide the window all the way to the top, I can no longer move the latch under the window. The window now, slowly, slides down, because the latch not longer holds it up. It only slides down an inch or so, but I’d like to fix that.
