To remove a window screen, first open one of the sashes of your sliding window and slide the screen toward the middle of the window. Then, grasp the screen frame but push the screen up instead of to the side. The spring screen clips are located at the bottom of the screen.
To clean, repair, or replace a window screen, learn how to properly remove it. Carefully lift the screen up and out of the window opening after disengaging the latches or clips. For sliding windows, open the window fully and slide the window sash. Heat and cold cause screens to expand and retract, so the wiggle and jiggle method is the easiest way to get a swollen screen out.
For sliding or double-hung windows, removing the screen is easy with the flexible screens. Tilt the sashes and completely remove them. Removing an old window screen without tabs is simple with a flathead screwdriver or a butter knife. Place the flathead or knife between the frame and the screen and pry it out.
Screen frames have spring loaded corner keys for easy removal and installation of the screen. Standard screens are white, Kolonial Oak, and North Star’s nine exterior colors. Double-hung windows can be removed and installed using the same steps as sliding windows.
In summary, learning how to properly remove a window screen is crucial for maintaining its condition and safety.

Thank you for this article. I just installed an American Craftsman 40″x38″ window that I ordered with a full screen. I was struggling trying to figure out how to remove the screen during the install, and Home Depot online was no help (at least that I could find). Based on your article, I turned the window over and placed it on a table; then I removed the window from the back (outside) using your technique; slightly modified. After installing the window, I dropped the lower sash (double hung) and reinstalled the screen from the inside; once again, using your technique. it worked great!!! All in all, this article saved me a LOT of frustration. Thank You!!!
The tip about tilting down the sashes was really helpful, but ultimately I’m still not able to get mine back in. There seems to be no give vertically with mine. These windows are up much higher than I can get with a ladder so my only option is pulling the screen inward and so far the best I can do it get 3 corners in the grooves and it was frustrating even to get that far. I don’t see how I’m going to get the last one popped back in.
