The “10-10 rule” suggests a 20-percentage margin, but there is no hard rule for this due to the unique characteristics of each company. • Good day, Mike. It is so funny having grown up in business and being fully aware of the topics you just covered. I started my company a week ago (or at least decided to go in fully) and have ticked all these boxes, but hearing it from you somehow relaxed me and gave me a sense of assurance that i will be okay. Thank you. I am definitely subscribing.

  • Just came across this article, very helpful. Answered most of the questions i had before perusal. Question: I currently have a father who has been doing construction for 28 years now. I want to start my own construction company and do my own thing. Is it possible if say for example i subcontract him and HE is the license HOLDER, would that work for now? to start off? or no? for (GC License).

  • Hi mate this article is 4 years old so not sure if you’ll still see this, but I am a projects manager and have been for some of the biggest company’s around the uk! Very confident in what I do and am now looking to make the step of my own company, I have a lot of labourers/fitters/supervisors around me that would happily join my team, would you recommend going straight in with what you said in this article or maybe just start by taking on jobs and just supplying labour for a start? And then build on it from there? Hoping you’ll see this 🙌

  • Hey i have some dilemma. About hiring workers. Should i get workers before i ever got a project? Or should i hire when i get a project. The thing is already having workers is i can mobilize instantly, but when i just hire when i get a project i may get pressured or some problems may occur because u dont know if you got workers to wòrk

  • Appreciate your in-site on starting a business. I have been thinking about it for years but have been skeptical because of the amount of schooling and student loans I have. I believe in RI the total cost budget w/o registration number is lower which hinders the economy. I believe RI is less than 1k threshold. If any one from RI can give me insite that would be greatly appreciate. I don’t want to undersell/oversell myself. Any advisement would help with the confidence aspect.

  • Hey Mike! I wonder if you can guide me with your experience. I’m thinking to start a Project Manager company as a DBA so I avoid paying the extra LLC fees since I’m just starting. I would be managing construction projects but most of the projects at the moment will be in the range of $5k to $30k. Would it be okay to go with a DBA at the beginning? I have worked for a construction company as a PM for 5 years but I don’t feel the necessity to get the GC license at the moment because of the small number of projects I’m currently getting (Doing this business as a side job). Thanks in advance for your reply!
