This video provides a step-by-step guide on how to trim or cut down a door without removing it. It focuses on the best way to cut off a door bottom, which can be done using a hand planer or a power planer. The video also discusses the process of trimming a new door to fit an existing frame and how to remove some of the door’s height to fix a door that doesn’t swing smoothly.
- Mark the door for the cut. Place a piece of tape on both the hinge side and the strike side (the side with no hinges).
- Use a power planer or belt sander to make the cut.
- Draw the cutline. Score the cut to prevent tearout. Make a gauge block and set the level back from the cutline. Tape the door, not the saw.
- Make the cut. Ease the edge using a good cross cut blade and steady pressure. Measure the saw base edge to the blade and clamp the straight edge guide the same distance from measurements.
- Take off the total (both top and bottom) from the bottom with a circular saw, fine tooth blade, blue tape to protect, and a straight edge clamped down. Use a 1/4-1/2 in (0.64-1.27 cm) wood shim to mark the cutting line at the bottom of the door.
- Use a guide and sharp blade in a circular saw to deeply score the cut line with a utility knife. Mark a pencil line along the bottom of the door with a block of wood 20mm thick.
A circular saw works better with a guide if you need to take more than about 6 or 8mm off a door, but it does require a sharp, fine tooth blade.
