The thing that always got me when I watched “Grand Designs”, was how (in my opinion at least) few if any of the finished places looked like “homes”. They were undoubtedly residential buildings, or houses, but few of them looked like “homes”, where people actually lived. No books or magazines lying on the tables, seating almost untouched by human arses, no coats hanging up, or boots left by the door. I realise that a lot of people are inherently tidier than me (which is a fairly low bar!) but there never seemed to be any evidence of anyone actually living in these places.
My brother and i made that beautiful coffee table at 00.48secs. 60 years ago, at my fathers caravan factory in Walton on Thames just 3 or 4 miles away from this wonderful Huf House in Sxxxxx xxxxs rd., Weybridge UK. After all these years i recognised it immediately because, as teenagers, we mades it for our parents house in closeby Woking. We would get offcuts or timber with defects from a chap who made this style of table, and this beautiful piece has a hole in it, so he gave it to us. Makes me very proud to see it appreciated and in this fab house.👍👍🇬🇧 Edit…… anyone know where the coffee table is now??
This house is an absolutely ridiculous design. When viewed from the perspective of interior living space vs roof area, it is preposterous. It is only possible when wealthy owners completely ignore the need for bona fide living space vs superfluous, cosmetic non-living spaces. Due to the type of construction technique (post and beam) it will be virtually impossible to alter the floor plan to any meaningful degree. It appears, that once again, wealthy property owners have frozen an illogical design over a piece of land that will only act as monument to their egos and only benefit similarly disconnected wealthy ppl.
Always hard to watch this guy’s snidey smug condescending smarmy negativity routine – same formula each episode – “and then they ran out of money…but borrowed some from somewhere…” “and then they were hit by the worst storms in living memory…but just managed to get the freaking roof on…” “and then they were attacked by bears…but managed to escape…” etc. God bless these amazing people with dreams & vision & the strength to live through the sheer Hell of trying to achieve their dreams.
One of the only decent houses ever on that show…Instead of the usual tourist centres or airport terminals. What i find so funny about the show is that, its kind of presented in a serious way and then these complete amateurs, are given free reign to build their own home and make a total bollocks of it, then Kevin, although honest, has to see the good in it, ”oh i love the brown wall above the breeze blocks”, ”ah yes, the rattan living room that doubles up as an s and m room”. Why doesn’t he get in touch with people who actually at least, have a knowledge and interest in architecture, people who know about Lloyd Wright or William Morris…then we’d have an interesting show, or!, does he know full well that seeing total idiots trying to build a house is going to get tonnes of views?, probably the latter…
I’m conflicted about this. I love old buildings too much. If I could buy a house of my own choosing and money was no object I wouldn’t buy anything under 200 years old. I like tradition and original features and things restored to their former glory. Iv lived in new builds that have been awful and iv lived in houses that are 100 years old that I loved. But these concept homes that are like giant art installations are not for me I’m afraid

A massive improvement on this design would be to make the middle section a single story flat roof garden with wooden beams and ivy for dappled shade. It would be incredibly simple cheap and easy for anyone to build with a flat central roof garden since the shape of the whole building would simply be two tall garden sheds connected by a single story oblong in the middle. The two roofs could also be living flower and grass roofs.
impossibly expensive, therefore unsustainable use of resources. lots of things are smart and cool but everything we extract has unintended costs. celebrate a designer who developed a resource friendly and pleasant housing system for a community that couldn’t previously afford an environment to live in.
This house (while impressive) feels exhausting & performative. It’s like living in the office or the studio for the rest of your life. My naive ideal is that after a lifetime of work, one deserves a space with more softness, more safe/rounded edges and the kind of welcome disorder that only grandchildren can bring.
Well it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. To me there’s just way too many dust collecting ugly panels and beams taking the attention away from the greenery and the art work. As an artist I created my home as a canvas to put my work on, everything’s either whites,grays, beige or black,neutral tones. Floors are wood and polished cement,white walls and large seamless floor to ceiling glass windows so I could open all of them when I want a uninterrupted views of the surroundings and let the fresh air in. So they really cannot say this is the perfect house cause it differs from person to person. To me this is a eyesore.
