How often do airlines repaint planes?
Commercial planes are repainted every seven to 10 years, depending on factors such as size, flight time, and climate. The process involves stripping away old paint for a thorough inspection before applying 600 to 1, 200 pounds of new paint, based on the size of the plane. Repainting a large Boeing 777 can cost $100, 000 to $200, 000 each time, and it can take two weeks for larger planes.
Corrosion from the elements can be a significant risk during a plane’s lifetime, as dust, oil, grease, water, battery acid, and other pollutants slowly strip away the paint, leaving areas unprotected. This can lead to harmful UV rays leaking into the aircraft and causing integral components like propellers or landing gears to fail.
To address this issue, a crew of eight people in Roswell, New Mexico, works around the clock to prep, strip, and repaint a Boeing 737 from nose to tail in just eight days. The first step in the repainting process is to strip away all paint, cover windows and other sensitive areas, sand down logos by hand, and apply a heavy paint thinner that melts the paint away overnight.
It is crucial to identify any areas of concern during the inspection, as neglecting maintenance can lead to corrosion and metal fatigue, potentially leading to major accidents.

How much is a major overhaul on a Piper Cherokee?
The Piper Cherokee’s engine time (TBO) is 2, 000 hours, with a significant impact on the price. The aircraft’s SMOH (Significant Maintenance Hours) can be costly, with a SMOH of 1, 400-1, 500 hours causing a significant overhaul expense. Total Airframe Time (TTAF) indicates the aircraft’s weight, with high TTAFs being less valuable. For The Piper Cherokee, it’s best to aim for TTAFs between 3, 000-6, 000 hours.
Avionics and upgrades, such as panel upgrades, GPS, Autopilot, and ADS-B installation, can also increase the aircraft’s value. It’s recommended to obtain an equipment list or installation and upgrade history to justify the additional avionics.

What is the most expensive part of an aircraft?
As winter approaches in the Northern hemisphere, the cost of heating homes and offices is a topic of discussion. In aviation, engines have always been the most expensive part of an aircraft, and they are only getting more expensive. A comparison of spare engine half-life market values for previous generation CFM56-5B or CFM56-7B series and new-generation PW1100G and CFM Leap-1B series shows a clear divergence in the premium the newer generation engines enjoy.
This difference can be attributed to the engines’ position in their lifecycle, where new engine values tend to go up a bit, and the steep rise in spare engine pricing on the newer generation is driven by the high inflationary environment. Newer generation engines have recovered all of their value compared to 2019 levels, while more mature engines continue to lag and may never return to pre-pandemic levels.
Maintenance costs are also going up, with recent increases in LLP pricing from manufacturers being significantly above the general inflation rate. This is affecting demand for spare engines, as operators are seeking green time and avoiding shop visits.

Definately worth it, especially when you can save a fair chunk of change doing a lot of the work yourself as a lame, what a awesome clean plane period, let alone to train in, could eat your dinner off that thing, even the door latch looks nice, i find one up and full fuel they hop off the ground quite well 1st stage flap, but feel a little more sluggish climb rate in the clean configuration, and yes hahaha the back seats are just an illusion thats more likely gunna see flight bags or eskys than bums 😀
I am in awe of the workmanship displayed in this article. I remember when I was looking for my first plane. My budget was limited and I was focused on the buying the best-maintained plane I could afford. I needed a plane that was equipped for IFR flight. Aesthetics of the plane were of secondary importance.
The Craftsman trip is very nice however the whole Gray interior is kind of bland the stripe does add some color but doesn’t do much and the color doesn’t match the exterior of the plane. I think you could have went with a lot warmer and Richer earthtones in the plane to make it more modern and luxurious while Complimenting the exterior
