Home Improvement, an American sitcom television series created by Matt Williams, Carmen Finestra, and David McFadzean, starred Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson. The show aired from September 17, 1991, to May 25, 1999, on ABC, earning seven Primetime Emmy Awards and a loyal audience following. The series finale was viewed by an estimated 35 million people across the United States with a “21.2%” rating.
The show was a ratings hit until the very end, with Patricia Richardson rejecting a ninth season due to the cancellation of the show. The series featured 204 22-minute episodes, spanning eight seasons. In the fifth season, Tim hires a mechanic for his car who turns out to be a gorgeous woman. Driving her home, he is caught by a traffic cam in a compromising position with her. The ticket arrives on Tim and Jill’s wedding anniversary, and Jill is suspicious.
In the fourth season, the Taylor family faces important milestones, such as Tim turning 40 and Jill being laid off. Richardson was ready to leave the show after eight seasons, but as the show entered its third season, she was able to renegotiate her contract to be guaranteed four Jill-centric episodes.
In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Patricia Richardson revealed the real reason for the cancellation of Home Improvement after eight successful seasons.
